11 Vietnamese fishers plead “guilty” in poaching case in Palawan : balita.ph

By Ruth T. Rodriguez
PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, May 22 (PNA) – Remember the 11 Vietnamese fishermen, who were also arrested in March this year by the PNP Maritime Special Boat Unit (SBU) off the municipal waters of Taytay in the northern part of the province with over 50 dead sharks?
They pleaded "guilty" Wednesday to Judge Ambrosio de Luna of Branch 51 of the Palawan Regional Trial Court (RTC) for poaching, or violating Republic Act 8550, otherwise known as the Philippine Fisheries Law.
Because of their plea, De Luna has scheduled the promulgation for the 11 Vietnamese fishers on June 4.
On the other hand, the fishing vessel KH 96365TS that was loaded with dead sharks had been forfeited in favor of the Philippine government.
On March 26 this year, while conducting seaborne patrol 20 nautical miles off mainland Taytay, and near the Nido Platform, a team from the PNP Maritime SBU arrested the Vietnamese while fishing for sharks, some of them threatened and protected under Philippine laws.
PNP Maritime administrative officer and spokesman Inspector Bryan Espinosa said, "On March 26, our personnel conducted a seaborne patrol within the vicinity of Taytay, specifically near the Nido Platform when they chanced upon the fishing vessel of the Vietnamese within our territory, that's why they made the arrest."
Currently, the Vietnamese are detained at the Palawan Provincial Jail (PPJ), where they await their sentences, he said.
Incidentally, Wednesday was also the day the Philippines welcomed Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung. (PNA)

Sad they cannot fish in their own waters and we all know the reason why.
