Pakistani teachers get gun training after Peshawar massacre

Peshawar: Teachers in northwest Pakistan are being given firearms training and will be allowed to take guns into the classroom in a bid to strengthen security following a Taliban massacre at a school last month.

Heavily armed militants killed 150 people, 132 of them children, in a bloody December 16 attack on an army-run school in Peshawar, the main town in Pakistan's northwest.

"Carrying firearms for every teacher is not obligatory, but all those who want to carry firearms to schools willingly will be provided with permits," Atif Khan, provincial education minister for the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, told AFP on Tuesday.

Provincial Information Minister Mushtaq Ghani confirmed the decision, adding that the province was unable to provide police guards for all of its government-run education institutions."The number of police in the province is not enough to guard 35,000 schools, colleges and universities -- that's why we have allowed teachers to carry firearms," Mr Ghani said.

Authorities began training teachers in how to use guns last week and the latest batch of female trainees started learning the ropes on Tuesday."It's a two-day course. We are training them on gun handling and also on (the) procedure of using it," said Mohammad Latif, a trainer at police headquarters in Peshawar.

Pakistan has already strengthened security for schools across the country, including by building elevated boundary walls with steel wire fencing and increasing the number of police. Private schools have been ordered to deploy extra security guards.

Malik Khalid Khan, the president of the Private Schools Teachers Association, opposed the move to arm teachers."How is it possible to teach students in a class... holding a gun in one hand and a pen in another?" Mr Khan told AFP."It's not our job, our job is to teach them books. A teacher holding a gun in the class will have very negative affect on his students," Mr Khan said, adding that the government should hire more police if they are short of numbers.

This is a counter productive idea, militants will target teachers and their families. They are dragging teachers into the mess.

That shows the level of helplessness in the part of Pakistan administration to protect its civilians.
This is in a WORLDS FIRST. Have we heard such things before in any other country?

Such Setup is a desperate move.

Guns have been part of Pakistani culture so for them this decision may not look odd. It's odd for us because guns are not part of our society.

Then with the grace of ISI and Pak army, they'd be trained and sneaked into India amidst heavy firing and shelling.

Once hunted down at LC by IA, Pakis would then classify them as "innocent civilians" and once again plead for world intervention in Kashmir. That or deny involvement at all.

Rinse and repeat..

Then security forces will haunt their lives if they found any thing suspicious . Taliban eye these teachers as a part of security force and so they will target these people. It is like if one lives by the sword and most likely die by it.

Teachers should stay away from this.

this is the best they can come up with. Imagine the influence on young mind of children learning under the shadow of weapons.

this is exactly the thing which makes someone militia/ terrorist. this is perhaps the second blow to the future of pakistan, first the madrassa and now these weapons ?

and what the teachers will teach A FOR AK 47, B FOR BOMB, C FOR CHAKU............

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS ARE THE TEMPLES WHERE YOU LEARN TO HOLD PEN AND PAPER NOT GUNS AND BULLETS.

Surefire way to turn non combatants into combatants but then again TTP is not giving them any other option.

This is not good enough. I say, Paki nanha mujahids should learn how to handle their AKs at a young age. Let all students be armed. Inshallah. that is when Pakistan will really progress.

Yeah right. Increasing the number of guns on the streets is going to decrease bloodshed.

In India, you get beaten up black and blue if you do NOT go to school.
In Pakistan, you get beaten up black and blue if you DO go to school.

The subcontinent has a long way to go in terms of civilization.
Beaten? I thought they were shot in Pakistan. Don't you know the difference? Lucky you, it seems you probably cleared ( or dropped out ) your madrassa, without being shot. Though I must conclude beating has/ had a profound and lasting effect on you as displayed by your posting pattern here.

Peshawar school attacks done by India as per Pakis. Accused becoming accusers to deflect guilt is a common tactic in Pakland.

Concerns to be raised about Indian hand in terrorism - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to take a tougher approach towards India and forcefully raise its concerns over alleged Indian involvement in acts of terrorism in Pakistan.

Successive governments in Pakistan always pointed to the Indian hand in terrorism, more particularly in Balochistan and tribal areas, but did not disclose specific information about the alleged role. That, a senior national security official said, would not be the case any more.

The security official, who requested anonymity, said: "Terrorism allegedly patronised by India is a major concern for us and we want the Indian government to address that."

The report about the government's change in tack with India vis-à-vis terrorism was shared with Dawn as Pakistan's High Commis-sioner to India Abdul Basit met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for consultations on the way forward in the stalemated ties with Delhi.

Pakistan's reaction to the India-US joint statement issued after President Barak Obama's visit bore the signs of changing strategy.

Adviser on Foreign Affairs and National Security Sartaj Aziz has in a statement mentioned terrorism "sponsored and supported from abroad" and Islamabad's expectation from others to show the same commitment as Pakistan had demonstrated in the global war on terrorism. India was not named, but there were little doubts, who was being alluded to.

The Pakistan government recently shared a 'dossier' with the US on the Indian involvement in terrorist acts here. The security official said it included some strong evidence of the Indian involvement in Dec 16 Peshawar school carnage which left 149 schoolchildren and teachers dead.

The attack was claimed by the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The government has been particularly uneasy over Delhi's continued terrorism allegations to undermine its counter-terrorism efforts.

Worrying as it has been for Pakistan, Indian allegations have found receptive ears in Washington.

Before embarking on India visit, President Obama had said in an interview that "safe havens within Pakistan were not acceptable". And the joint statement issued at the conclusion of the presidential visit called on Islamabad to "bring the perpetrators of the November 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai to justice".

The security official said that the new strategy on India was meant to counter the narrative that India was a victim of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.

DIALOGUE RESUMPTION: Source in the PM Office, who was privy to High Commissioner Basit's discussions with Prime Minister Sharif, said it was decided in principle to show no haste in resumption of stalled dialogue.

Sharing the sense of the meeting, the source said: "Pakistan will wait till India was ready to talk and talk on all issues."

A PM Office statement quoted Mr Sharif as saying: "India is an important neighbour for us and we would like to have normal relations with the country on the basis of mutual respect and sovereign equality."

Pakistani strategists believe that India could soon move to restart the dialogue. They base their assessment on the fact that elections in Kashmir have been completed and, therefore, there would be no more domestic compulsion to keep tensions with Pakistan high. Also, the US has been reported to be nudging New Delhi to restart the dialogue.
