ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Saturday that he had decided to send the water and power minister to India to explore potential areas of cooperation between the two countries.

Speaking to members of the Pak-India Joint Business Council at the Prime Minister's Office, he said: "We are facing acute electricity shortage and any assistance in the power sector will help us in addressing the problem."

Expressing satisfaction over the visit of Indian businessmen under the auspices of the council, Mr Sharif said: "It is reassuring that both sides are sitting together and talking to each other." He said his government was pursuing investor-friendly policies.

The prime minister said it had always been his endeavour to bring the two countries closer to each other so that they could benefit from each other's experience.

He said his party had pursued a policy of friendship and cooperation with India during its previous stints in power and the same policy of amity would be followed this time to promote peace and prosperity in the region.

Indian members of the council informed the prime minister that India could be of great help in providing support in medical science, higher education and technical and vocational training.

The meeting discussed non-discriminatory market access and agreed that the industrialists of both countries should be provided a level-playing field.—Amin Ahmed

We don't have any electricity to spare.
We can have a barter exchange though.

Since Gujarat is an Electricity Surplus state - they can sell to Sindh in Pakistan which is facing acute electricity shortage.
And Pakistani Punjab can sell to Indian Punjab and Rajasthan, which can then be redistributed to Northern Grid.

Win-Win.

They should give us access to their coal reserve.

If they have coal ( Thar coal) in Sindh opposite to Gujrat and Rajastan border then they must export the same to us.
We may even setup new power plants on our side and export them electricity.

With no raw material input, they should forget getting electricity from us even at a premium rate.
No, free loading especially for Pakistan.

Pakistan has oil in Balochistan. They should use that oil to generate electricity. They should also ensure the bulk of the profits are ploughed back into Balochistan. What will the Pakistani Minister do in India? Learn how to fix a blown up transformer?

Hundreds of millions have been pumped into JuD coffers by the new PM of Pakistan.

Let us take a step back and ask Mr.Sharif to lay down his policies regarding the terror outfits and then we should match his actions and deeds with electricity or trade whatever he desires. There are no freebies Mr.Prime Ministers, Sharif & singh. This is not a Punjabi biradari meeting going on. Our National interests have to be looked into first.

Don't beg India for power: Hafiz Saeed to Pakistan

LAHORE: Pakistan should not buy electricity from India, Jamaat-ud-Dawah chief Hafiz Saeed has told the government, days after PM Nawaz Sharif directed his power minister to visit India to address the severe energy crisis facing the country.

"India is producing electricity on Pakistani rivers and offering the same to us to buy. Don't our rulers understand this basic point?" Saeed, the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, asked while addressing an 'Ummat Conference' at Sheikhupura, some 40 kilometres from here, on Sunday.

Saeed, who is carrying a $10 million bounty on his head declared by the US, has been freely moving and conducting his activities mostly in Punjab, a province of 90 million. "There is no need to beg India.., " Saeed, the former head of banned Lashkare-Taiba , added.

His warning to the Sharif government came in the wake of its proposed plan to buy electricity from India and China to cope with the current energy crisis.

Finance minister Ishaq Dar had said India is ready to sell up to 2000 MW electricity to Pakistan and "we are seriously pondering to purchase electricity from India.

Right now people of Pakistan have to pick either of two options mentioned below:

1. Support terrorism against India.
2. Import electricity from India.

I had an exchange with Ambassador KC Singh who favors selling electricity to develop leverage. India can turn off in case there is terror attack or war. My point to him was this requirement of electricity is only temporary and not permanently till Chinese built Hydel and nuclear power plants come up as well as gas for Iran, Balochistan fire up their power plants. Also told him that when it comes to India, Pak can eat grass so even if you cut off electricity, it will not matter to Pakis. I told him that with all its levers, the US was not able to pull Pak and forced to talk with Taliban.

End result of the conversation was that we agreed to disagree :D

Yusuf Sir,
I also somewhat agree with Ambassador K C Singh, but my POV is little different.

This arrangement if successful will be beneficial to them as they don't have funds to develop Thar coal and Power plants and to us by giving us good leverage.

This is a temporary arrangement not permanent. So it actually gives us no leverage. In a say a post terror attack India cuts electricity supplies and amasses troops or actually attacks Pak, will Pak bother about electricity from India?

It is not that Pakistan is buying from India alone.

It is buying also from Iran IIRC,

Let them keep buying and spending money.

They will not have the funds to build the infrastructure to generate electricity, unless they beg someone to give them money.

Then switch of the electricity!
