Israel help to reduce water pollution

A team of experts from Israel on Tuesday reached Bhubaneswar to study groundwater pollution in the city. The Chilika Development Authority (CDA), which is managing the wetlands at Chilika, is facilitating the team's visit.

The team will conduct a study called 'phytoremediation', meaning use of plants for the removal of pollutants from contaminated soil or water. "We have selected wetlands near the Biju Patnaik Airport for the study. The Odisha Wetlands Development Authority and department of forest and environment along with CDA will help the team promote eco-friendly technology to reduce water pollution," said chief executive of CDA Ajit Pattnaik.

He said the study would go a long way in restoring the quality of water in urban water bodies. "The phytoremediation method to reduce water contamination involves zero operating costs. Within the next three months, the state government will run this technology on a pilot basis in urban areas. Based on the results, the plans for implementation will be drawn up," said Pattnaik.

"The technology can be used by municipalities, multi-dwellings units, industries and wetlands for holistic wastewater management," said Eli Cohen, one of the team members.

Israeli tourists get a taste of Madurai and its culture

Breaking the shackles of custom by visiting a couple of temples in Madurai and taking a rickshaw ride around the city to visit the Thirumalai Naicker Mahal and Gandhi Memorial Museum, a group of 34 tourists from Israel went further to explore the tradition and culture of the historic city. Most of the tourists who are visiting India for the first time were awestruck on witnessing the rich culture, heritage and hospitality of the rural people. Travelling by a bullock cart, watching karagattam, thappattam and devaraattam amidst villagers in Madurai during the village cultural immersion programme were some of the moments they would cherish throughout their lifetime.

They reached Madurai through Bangalore by road. What was special during their trip was going beyond visiting the usual places to explore the village and to witness extraordinary hospitality. Clad in colourful dresses, the 34 tourists reached Velliankundram village near Appan Thirupathi, on bullock carts taking note of the life the villagers led. Traditional food made up of millets was an unexpected surprise for them, who quickly adjusted with the food and even loved it.

They were astonished by the bit of history attached to the village. Velliankundam was one of the 72 zamins during King Thirumalai Naicker during 17{+t}{+h} century. The information on E K Pulikesi the descendant of the zamin, who is still respected by the people and offered first preference during the famous Chithirai festival, fondly made as the village president, fascinated them. They curiously interacted with Pulikesi, who had visited Israel once to study the agriculture method there. Tamil or Hebrew, for them language was not a barrier to communicate.

Elisheva, one of the tourists from South Israel said, "The temples here are very beautiful and colourful. I was overwhelmed by the people, their hospitality, food and the culture. India is such a vast country with huge population. It is fascinating to visit the country."

For Moran Kushnir, who is leading the group, India is a home away from home. "I have been travelling in India for 15 years and I feel like home here. This part of the country is very rich in culture and tradition," she said. K P Bharathi, programme leader of tourism development, Dhan Foundation, a Madurai-based NGO, which organised the visit said that these rural visits not only help to spread our culture and tradition but also develop the lifestyle of villages by augmenting their income.

Israel, India to Strengthen Economic Cooperation

A delegation led by the Director General of the Indian Ministry of Science and Technology met with a joint team from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem on January 21, 2014, to strengthen the economic cooperation between Israel and India. The purpose of the discussions is to establish a fund of about $10 million for five years to deal with industrial and technological subjects.

The fund will help Israeli companies to participate in huge projects led by the Indian government, develop joint work by Israeli and Indian companies in mutual research projects, and adapt products developed in Israel for the Indian market. The fund will focus on a variety of subjects, such as agriculture, water, energy, ICT and aerospace.

The Chief Scientist, Avi Hasson: "The highlight of the establishment of the fund is the establishment of a tool that may be used as a breakthrough in assisting Israeli developers and industrialists to penetrate the Indian market. Emerging markets are a priority for both the Office of the Chief Scientist and for the entire government, penetration of these markets could lead to extensive business opportunities for the Israeli developer."

The Ministry of Finance Deputy Director of the Budget Department, Yonatan Regev: "Increasing exports to the Indian market is an essential part of the State of Israel's export diversification strategy. These discussions advance the promotion of economic ties with India."

Israel wants India to explore gas, sign trade pact

Israel has invited Indian companies to take part in extracting natural gas from its newly-found reserves, with 40 percent of the produced hydrocarbon reserved for exports, even as it wants talks on a free trade pact to fructify soon.

Israeli Ambassador to India Alon Ushpiz said his country will soon emerge as one of the biggest producers of natural gas and is willing to export it to India, which imports around 80 percent of its oil needs mostly from the Persian Gulf countries.

"Our plan is to keep 60 percent of the produce for domestic use, while the remaining 40 percent will be exported," Ushpiz said during an interaction with IANS editors, adding: "India, being one of the largest importers, will be the natural target."

The offshore gas reserves in the Mediterranean Sea, which extends from the coasts of Israel, Lebanon and Syria in the east to Cyprus in the west, is estimated to hold 122 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 1.7 billion barrels of oil - the biggest discovery in 10 years.

A consortium led by Houston-based Noble Energy is developing the Tamar field in the Mediterranean Sea, located nearly 90 km west of Israel's port city of Haifa. Supply of gas from Tamar started in March 2013 for Israel's domestic use.

Another field named Leviathan in the Mediterranean Sea is also being developed by the Noble Energy-led consortium. The production is expected to start by 2017.

Ushpiz said Israel would be happy to see Indian companies' participation in these gas fields. "Any Indian company is free to participate, private or government-run." But he clarified that the country bars any company that has dealings with Iran.

Besides energy, the ambassador said, Israel is keen to enhance cooperation with India in other sectors like information technology, defence, water management and agriculture.

Ushpiz said Israel is keen to further enhance the corpus of the fund and also encourage private participation in it.

On the ongoing talks for a free trade agreement, Ushpiz said: "It's a very complicated set of negotiations. It has been going on for more than three years now. Unfortunately, so far, we have not been able to conclude the negotiations."

But once the agreement is signed, India-Israel bilateral trade could rise three-fold in three -five years, the ambassador stated at the IANS office.
"The agreement is a strategic game changer to what we can and should do together. The minute we have a free trade agreement, the volume of trade is going to be much bigger. It is going to be larger by two-three fold in three-five years," he said.

"It will also change the composition of trade and remove the focus from the traditional things that we may be doing for the past 10 years to things which we should do together with high technology," the ambassador added.

India-Israel trade stood at $4.44 billion in 2012, down 14.3 percent from the previous year's $5.19 billion due to a slowdown. The balance of trade was in Israel's favour by $573 million, according to data available with India's external affairs ministry.

In the first nine months of 2013, the two-way trade stood at $3.24 billion.

India, Israel sign pacts on security cooperation

The agreements relate to Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty in Criminal Matters, Agreement on Protection of Classified Material and Agreement on Cooperation in Homeland and Public Security.

The pacts were signed by Additional Secretary in the Home Ministry Rajiv Sharma and Ambassador of Israel in India Alon Ushpiz and one agreement by Director in the Ministry of Defence Amir Kain, a Home Ministry spokesperson said.

In a press release, the Israel Embassy said Israel views these agreements as a part of the ongoing efforts by both the countries in the war against terror, which are based on the shared determination to protect their citizens, their assets and their interests.

"We believe that these agreements are another important platform for the cooperation between our countries and we would like to express our appreciation for the leadership of the Ministry of Home Affairs in this regard," the release said.

Israel's Minister of Public Security Yitzhak Aharonovich said the agreements signed were a fine example of Israel's substantial and equal partnership with India.

"The various types and forms of threats the two countries face make this cooperation an indispensable one. Terror is a global threat and only through cooperation between allies can peace-seeking countries overcome such threats," he said.

Ambassador of Israel in India Alon Ushpiz said the unconditional commitment Israel shares with India to protect the lives of the citizens is the bedrock of these pacts.

"By joining hands in this important field, whether it is through technology or through investment in the crucial human resource, we will be able also to better ensure the continuing development of our societies and economies," he said.

India and Israel had signed the Extradition Treaty and Agreement for Transfer of Sentenced Persons in 2012.

Indian Army chief in Israel to discuss military ties

Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh is expected to discuss ongoing defence projects between India and Israel and ways of further strengthening military ties during his ongoing four-day visit to that country.

The issue of delays in the completion of the medium-range surface-to-air missile systems is expected to come up for discussion during the talks between the two sides, Army officials said here.

Israel is one of the major suppliers of weapon systems to the Indian armed forces including critical equipment such as assault rifles for the Special Forces.

Gen Singh's Israeli counterpart Maj Gen Guy Zur had visited India last year and discussed the security situation in and around the region with the top military and political leadership.

Israel has been building strong military-to-military relations with India in recent years and has emerged as the second largest defence supplier to India behind only Russia in the last decade-and-a-half.

Gen Bikram Singh's predecessor Gen V K Singh was supposed to visit Israel in 2012 but the visit was cancelled in view of the situation in West Asia at that time.

From Israel to India: Barhi dates in for bumper crop

Preparations are in full swing as Indian farmers get ready for a bumper harvest of Barhi dates with early forecasts predicting record yield this summer.

It has been a decade since Barhi date tissue culture plants were first imported to India from Israel. Production of the fruit has taken some time to get off the ground and produce high yields, but this year's harvest is set to be the best yet, according to producer Anmol Rattan Sharma from Gorasiya Farm in western India.

Speaking with FreshFruitPortal.com, he described how the company is gearing up to harvest a predicted 1,000 – 1,200 MT of Barhi dates in just over two-months' time.

"The season is going extremely well for us and we have big plans for this year's harvest, which we expect to produce larger volumes than previous years.

"Every year we have managed to produce more and more Barhi dates and we will be harvesting during the last week of June. At this point in time, everything is looking very good; the flowering and pollination has been done.

"The flowers look excellent and we're expecting a good crop this time, better than ever," Sharma said.

Volumes have been steadily increasing year on year since cultivation first began in India ten years ago. In 2012, Gorasiya Farm produced around 500MT, followed by 900MT in 2013. Predictions for 2014 are up to 1,200MT.

The Indian Barhi date season is earlier than that of competitors in Israel, giving Sharma the opportunity to broker export deals in the Middle East and Europe. Gorasiya Farm is currently in talks with Mumbai exporters to negotiate a deal to supply the Pakistani market. The company will also continue to supply the domestic market in Calcutta.

"In relation to the European market, we have appointed some exporters who are located in Mumbai and from here our dates will be exported to Germany, France, Italy and the U.K.

"This year we're also planning to export to Pakistan and we are looking to target Dubai as this is a very important market for us. We want to get our dates out to as many different countries as possible.

"We are able to do this because our season comes much earlier than the season in Israel, so we can really take advantage of this and supply a lot of different markets located all over the world without any direct competition. This is why it is so important we have good production to meet the demand," Sharma added.

Barhi dates are grown mainly in the Gujarat region where the desert climate, sandy soil and temperatures are well suited for date production.

The fruit is eaten fresh and has a yellowish-golden color when ripe. Gorasiya Farm's dates are available in 500 gram plastic punnets as well as in glass jars for premium retailers.

From the Command and Control Center of Israel Electric Corporation in Bangalore India -

At the end of 2013 Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) established CyberGymâ„¢'s Arena, a unique cyber-war training facility. At the launch ceremony of this facility Yiftah Ron-Tal, Chairman of the Board of Directors of IEC, mentioned that "We face hundreds of thousands of penetration attempts into our systems on a monthly basis, IEC stands ready to fend off these attacks and CyberGymâ„¢, the unique cyber facility we have established, is the best training environment in the world for cyber defense." According to Frost & Sullivan the cyber defense market for oil and gas industries will reach US$ 3.75 billion by 2021. They further mentioned that, over 88,000 kilometers of oil and gas pipes will be placed in the upcoming years; the need to protect this infrastructure will generate a market demand for physical and cyber security solutions. F&S believe that the cyber defense market for oil and gas infrastructure will show the fastest growth in this field.

According to Yaron Blachman, head of Information Security and Cyber field at PwC Israel, "Experts believe that the actual number of attacks against SCADA systems is 100 times larger than what is officially published. These systems are part of our everyday lives and exist in water and sewage systems, electricity plants, gas networks, stop-lights, trains, production lines, amusement parks, medical devices etc., and all have extensive security vulnerabilities"

Several cyber-attacks have been documented in the past against energy, oil and gas infrastructure; including against the Sau Paulo electricity company in 2009, STUXNET in 2010 and NIGHT DRAGON in 2011, yet it is known that the overall number of attacks against oil and gas infrastructure is growing at an alarming rate. India is a country well documented for both the countless cyber-attacks it faces, and for the number of attacks generated from it on a daily basis. According to the Russian security firm Kaspersky, India is second only to Russia in the number of cyber-attacks it faces. Most attacks target financial firms and government organizations. Following Russia and India on this list are Vietnam, Ukraine and UK.

An invitation by Israel's Commercial Consulate in Bangalore to Mr. Gilad Yoshi, Vice President of CyberGymâ„¢ to visit Bangalore and explore business cooperation with local partners led to a unique security event at the Consulate on March 10-11, 2014, in which Mr. Yoshi gave a seminar to and conducted one-on-one meeting with several local cyber firms. Mr. Yoshi presented CyberGymâ„¢'s capabilities and solutions in protection of critical infrastructure such as power stations, oil and gas infrastructure, air fields and additional organizations. Among the local companies that attended the event were Karnataka Power Corporation, ABB, Karnataka Water Board and Rockwell. Mr. Yoshi had evaluated the potential of the market and mentioned that he believed this is a growing market with an increasing demand for cyber products, solutions and training. He also added that we can see an overall growth in the number of Israeli security products and solutions provided in India and that it is his belief that "India will be a major market in the growth of CyberGym over the next couple of years."

DoT to showcase India as telecom gear manufacturing hub in Israel

A top level telecom department (DoT) team will participate in a global convention next month in Israel to showcase India as a world-class networks gear manufacturing hub amid mounting concerns in the US and Europe about India's local sourcing and screening rules.

The DoT's decision comes after the foreign ministry recently exhorted telecom secretary M F Farooqui to expedite steps to showcase India's telecom gear manufacturing abilities and policies in key markets like Israel, in a bid to boost bilateral trade.

"There isn't much awareness in Israel about India's capabilities in high-tech sectors, its qualified manpower or its telecom industry's ability to manufacture at a commercially scalable level," wrote India's ambassador to Israel, Jaideep Sarkar, in a recent letter to Farooqui seen by ET.

Sarkar added that "DoT needed to project India's abilities and the upcoming three-day convention in Tel Aviv was an excellent opportunity to steer the country's bilateral economic partnership with Israel."

But industry circles familiar with matters said that DoT could face some tough questions at the Tel Aviv event amid US and Europe's mounting concerns about India's local sourcing rules and its decision to locally screen imported network gear from July 1 despite it having been cleared by globally certified labs.

Leading US trade lobbies have warned that such double testing could hold up critical telecom gear supplies and also increase cost of telecom services in India, post July.

The government's technology research arm Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) along with Telecom Consultants India Ltd, Micromax Informatics Ltd and Telecom Centres of Excellence, India (TCOE) will also participate in the three-day telecom covention in Israel, starting May 20.

A related government note indicates the DoT delegation will interact with top Israeli developers of IT and telecom security products at the convention. Senior C-DoT executives are also likely to explore R&D partnerships with Israel-based companies involved in telecom R&D.

The upcoming developments come at a time when India is working with Israel's cyber intelligence solutions provider, Verint Systems to address cyber security concerns.

Communications minister Kapil Sibal had recently said Verint was keen to work with the Indian government to address the issue of intercepting encrypted communications like Gmail, Yahoo.mail to Skype among others.

Indications are that senior Verint executives will be present at the Tel Aviv event.

Israel Offer Scholarship Program to Help Indian Women Entrepreneurs to Succeed

India and Israel have had formal diplomatic relations since 1991. Trade between the two countries has risen from $200 million in 2001 to more than $6 billion in 2013.

India has seen major growth in its high tech sector in recent years. But Indian women have been excluded from senior corporate positions there.

A new scholarship program in Israel has been created to aid Indian women gain the education that they need to rise to the top in corporate India. With the aid of The Bonita Trust and The Israel Asia Center, Tel Aviv University's Recanati School of Business Administration's Sofaer International MBA program will now offer scholarships to prospective Indian women entrepreneurs.

The scholarship will be offered for the coming 2014-2015 academic year. All applicants must meet the requirements for both admission to the Sofaer MBA program and the Israel Asia Fellowship program. Completion of the GMAT exam is required for admission.

Qualifiers for the scholarship will receive full free tuition and be able to participate in the Israel-Asia leaders Fellowship. Upon completion of the program, Indian women will also have the opportunity to acquire seed funding for their start ups if they are Israel-India ventures.

Health care can be focus of ties with India: Israeli envoy

Alon Ushpiz, Israeli Ambassador to India, on Monday emphasised on focusing on affordable health care and increasing the scope of co-operation between India and Israel in the areas of policing and counter-terrorism.

In an interaction with the members of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry here, he said Israel and India shared a high level of compatibility when it came to challenges for both the nations - be it a complicated neighbourhood that both the countries have individually, or the partnerships they share in civilian trade, defence and agriculture.

Giving the lowdown on technology offered by Israel, he said Israel can offer de-salination projects at a cost of 60 cents per cubic metre, the most cost- efficient price in the world.

He said the only thing India needed to do was to adapt the technology to Indian conditions.
Ushpiz said that a new fund was being set up, which would be offered for business based on technology beyond the industrial research and development. He said currently around nine projects from India were being screened for this fund.

He said that to bridge the gap between the technology developed in the lab and the industry, the private sector in India can tie up with the best of the universities in Israel.

He showed two small instruments based on technology devised by companies in Israel. One of them is used for drip irrigation and sprays the right amount of fertiliser to the crops, with the right pressure of water.

'Pilcam'

Another is a "pilcam" - a pill with a camera (actually a miniature version of the camera installed on an anti-tank missile). He said the patient just pops the pill and the doctor can see the inside of the patient on a screen.

On being asked if any additional precautionary measures were being taken for the safety of Israelis living in the City, he refused to comment.

'I feel absolutely safe here'

"I have full faith in Indian agencies and I feel absolutely safe here," said Israeli envoy Ushpiz, when this newspaper asked him about the recent arrest of a terror suspect in Chennai, who is believed to have said that the Israeli Consulate in Bangalore was on the hit list of terrorists.

Israel finds key partner in newly elected Indian PM

Significant Israeli investment in India is only going to grow under leadership of newly-elected prime minister Narendra Modi, who boasts long-time support of Israel.

Israel may have a staunch new ally in South Asia with India's election of Narendra Modi to the position of Prime Minister, reported the New York-based International Business Times on Saturday.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wasted no time on Friday, calling Modi to congratulate him for his victory. In their phone conversation, the two had agreed to work to deepen cooperation between the two countries.
Modi is a Hindu nationalist and considered to be right-wing in Indian politics. Born into a poor family where he sold tea with his father as a child, he rose to prominence as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, a Western province in India.

In the latter half of 2013, agreements were signed with Israeli company Tower Semiconductor and a Swiss company to open two semiconductor fabrication plants (one of which would be in Gujarat) at a cost of $10.4 billion.

The two plants are projected to create 22,000 jobs. Indian consumption of the semiconductor products for electronic chips to be made at the plants is due to rise from $7 billion in 2014 to $55 billion in 2020, paving the way for investment in additional plants.

"Gujarat is a business-oriented state and this (memorandum of understanding) will help both Israeli and Gujarat-based companies in developing and strengthening the industrial relationship," said Israel's Consul General in Mumbai, Jonathan Miller, to Israel National News.

"Our focus is on increasing research ties with Gujarat. Israel is keen to increase research and development and cultural ties with Gujarat," said Miller who also added that a free-trade agreement may be on the horizon for the two countries.

Miller also spoke on Indian TV to discuss Israeli involvement in agricultural projects. "Israel is a world leader in advanced agriculture technologies. Israel's success lies in the determination and ingenuity of farmers and scientists and in the close cooperation between R&D and industry," said Miller.

"These characteristics have created a flourishing agriculture sector amidst a difficult environment with limited ground and water resources. Amongst the many fields in which Israel and India collaborate, agriculture has always been front and center," he concluded.

Modi was accused of complicity in the violence and though he was absolved of all accusations by India's Supreme Court, the US and European countries rejected visas for Modi in sanctions meant to punish the leader for not doing enough to end the violence.

Israel gained Modi as a business partner and political supporter when he saw that attempting to find financial investment from the US and Europe wasn't politically viable.

Yet, it isn't only for financial gain that Israel finds itself naturally partnered with Modi's BJP. Anti-Pakistan and anti-Islamic rhetoric from BJP officials over the years has drawn India closer to Israel politically and ideologically as they also search for ways to cooperate in fighting terrorism.

The National security adviser from a previous BJP government said in Washington that India, Israel, and the US must, "jointly face the same ugly face of modern-day terrorism." The comments came in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City and preceded the first state visit from an Israeli Prime Minister to India.
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's visit to the country was widely protested by Indian Muslims.

While any positive relationship between the two countries creates a complicated situation between the Indian State and the Islamic world, financial cooperation has been significant no matter who was in power. Israel is India's largest provider of military equipment for example, amounting to $10 billion.

India diplomat: We want to embrace Israeli tech

One of the largest tech business delegations from India to ever arrive in Israel is scheduled to arrive next week. Some 30 Indian companies, large and small, plan to have booths at the India Pavilion at the Tel Aviv MIXiii 2014 conference, the largest tech event to be held in Israel this year.

Those companies represent the leading edge of Indian tech business interest in Israel, according to Vani Rao, deputy chief of mission in the Embassy of India. "Israel and India already do a lot of business in several areas, including agriculture and diamonds, with the latter accounting for about half the current $5 billion in trade between our countries," Rao said in an interview. "Interest in Israel from the information technology sector has been increasing in recent years as well, with Indian companies seeking to partner with Israeli start-up and veteran companies on development projects."

Not included in that $5 billion figure is defense trade between Israel and India, Rao noted. Although most Israelis are aware of the defense, agriculture and diamond aspects of trade between the two countries, many are unaware that there is actually a booming, if quiet, IT connection between them already.

"Many of Israel's IT largest companies, such as Ceragon, Truphatek, CheckPoint, Magic Software, Ness Technologies and others have operations in India," said Rao. "Amdocs, which provides communication and back office services for companies around the world, has about 1,000 employees at its office in Pune." Teva and a number of biotech companies have substantial Indian operations. Several large Indian firms, including Infosys and Tata, were already working with Israeli start-ups, she said.

Despite all that, Rao admits that the business relationship in IT between Israel and India has been somewhat low key until now. That, however, is about to change, as India is ready for a lot more help from, and joint projects with, Israeli start-ups and established companies that have the advanced tech that the country needs to continue growing. "Demand for high technology and electronic component products in India is projected to increase to $400 billion by 2020, but based on current trends, we will only be able to produce $150 billion worth of those needs," said Rao.

Instead of importing those components, the Indian government intends to ensure that the local economy can produce them, said Rao. That's where Israel comes in. "Israel has a lot of great technology that can contribute to closing this shortfall, and obviously this is a business opportunity for Israeli companies as well." More Indians in the IT business are becoming aware of Israel's tech advances, and if they were not flocking to the country for deals before, Rao said, it was more out of ignorance than a resistance to working with Israel, or fear of upsetting the Arab countries.

MIXiii is the right place for the Indian companies and regional government development organizations in the delegation to go for tech deals. Sponsored by the IATI (Israel Advanced Technology Industry), the two-day event will cover the gamut of Israeli tech, with exhibits and lectures from executives in industries such as high-tech, biomed and cleantech. Thousands of visitors, including investors, vendors and potential customers, will be attending, IATA said.

The India Pavilion represents the largest single Indian presence at an Israeli event yet. It is coordinated by the Embassy of India, Confederation of Indian Industry and the Global Innovation and Technology Alliance (GITA). Their participation is being sponsored by India's Departments of IT & Electronics; Telecommunication; Science and Technology; Small, Micro and Medium Enterprises; and the state governments of Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Gujarat.

With India set to increase its outreach efforts to Israeli start-ups, the country enters an already crowded field. According to a recent Economy Ministry report, Israel will for the first time export more to East Asian countries than it will to the US, with much of that trade with China.

But India doesn't foresee a competition developing between itself and China. "There's enough business to go around for everyone, believe me," Rao said. "India's needs are also different from China's, as we are concentrating on developing infrastructure and core technologies," while China may in some respects be beyond that point, she added.

While Rao diplomatically offered a "no comment" on the question of whether India was a "safer" investment venue for Israeli companies than China — after all, India, unlike China, is a democracy — she did say that "India's virtues speak for themselves." She noted that India has "had elections and smooth changes of governments for over 50 years, we have an independent judiciary that subscribes to all international conventions on patents, we have a free and fair press, and we communicate in English. Most importantly, our peoples and countries have a lot in common, and this would definitely make for successful business endeavors."

The Israeli Consulate General in Bangalore (together with agriculture experts from the Israeli Embassy in Delhi) is collaborating with the Ministry of Horticulture in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to run an Indo-Israeli project of Centers of Excellence (CoE) in South India.

These CoEs are practically "horticulture demonstration plots" that are being built, with Israeli technology and knowledge, where the local farmers will be offered courses and seminars of various successful and proven agriculture technics that Israeli farmers are using to develop and improve their production.

The State of Israel, along with India's government, has decided to establish 27 different Indo-Israeli CoEs all across India. Among them 5 are being set up in south India and are (naturally) being accompanied by the Israeli Consulate General in Bangalore.

See the following list of CoEs in the region:
1 - Vegetable CoE in Dharwad, Karnataka
2 - Pomegranate CoE in Bagalkot, Karnataka
3 - Mango CoE in Kolar, Karnataka
4 - Vegetable CoE in Madurai, Tamil Nadu
5 - Flowers CoE in Thally, Tamil Nadu

On the past week (12-19/5/14) the Israeli team, has visited all 5 CoEs to get a firsthand impression of the current progress on the sites. We can definitely say now that it looks like soon the farmers in the region can enjoy the Israeli technics and technology in their own fields to increase and leverage their lands productivity!
