EU: Give us £1.7bn;
UK: No!

"Wealthy" G7 nations quarelling for money.

David Cameron

The UK has been told it must pay an extra £1.7bn (2.1bn euros) towards the European Union's budget because the economy has performed better than expected in recent years.

So why is the UK suddenly being asked for extra cash?

This is part of an annual process in which the European statistics agency Eurostat uses figures from member states to work out how much they should each be contributing to the EU budget.

It happens every year, and in some previous years I'm told that the UK has received a rebate.

You might not have noticed it in previous years, because the amounts involved have been smaller.

This year, however, the UK has been asked for an additional contribution, which is considerably higher than any other member state.

David Cameron has angrily insisted the UK will not pay £1.7bn being demanded by the European Union.

"If people think I am paying that bill on 1 December, they have another think coming," the prime minister said in Brussels. "It is not going to happen."

Notice that all the sources are BBC articles. Hopefully this thread will be balanced out with sources from EU.

Re: What if Britain left the EU?

Chancellor George Osborne announced the British government will only pay half of its £1.7bn EU bill, payable in two installments due after May's general election, in a deal struck in Brussels on Friday.

The European Commission had previously demanded £1.7bn to be paid by December 1 – a sum calculated on the basis of the UK's comparatively healthy growth.

Under Friday's deal, Britain will now pay £850m.

Here's the balance:

Britain's automatic rebate on its contributions to the EU budget was expected to knock €1bn off the demand for €2.1bn, leading the chancellor to brag that he had halved the payment.

While insisting that the invoice had been reduced, Treasury aides conceded that Britain will pay the £850m while also returning the rebate cheque to Brussels, meaning that the full £1.7bn will still be paid.

Re: What if Britain left the EU?

Hmm, so Osborne was claiming as all politicians do.
You mean lying? Maybe he slanted his statement to make it appear that UK will only pay £850m to EU. He was not entirely lying, as it appears that UK will indeed only shell out £850m from its bourse. The balance will be paid out in effect by the EU in behalf of UK though rebates that will be returned.

Prevarication is the appropriate word. Politicians are good at that.
