Looks like we are back to the 1930s in Europe where the fascist vs Communist conflagrations were taking place across different European countries.
Article on the same

The spokesman for Greece's extremist far-right Golden Dawn party caused an uproar today when he physically assaulted two left-wing deputies on live television during a morning political show.

Tempers frayed on the political show on the private Antenna television station during a discussion on the country's politics in the run-up to repeat elections on June 17th.

Golden Dawn spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris took offence at a reference by radical left Syriza party member Rena Dorou over a court case pending against him.

Mr Kasidiaris (31) bounded out of his seat and hurled a glass of water across the table over Ms Dorou when she said there was a "crisis of democracy when people who will take the country back 500 years have got into the Greek parliament".

"Golden Dawn continues its fight for a strong nationalist movement against everyone, and naturally against the orphans of Marx, who dominate on the (broadcast) channels and are playing a dirty propaganda game,"
the party said in a statement.

They want to recapture Istanbul (Constantinople) ....

The leader of Greece's extreme right wing Golden Dawn Party, Nikos Mihaloliakos, has said during an interview that Istanbul could be taken back in the future, private broadcaster NTV reported today on its website.

"Is it realistic to ask for Istanbul, where 15 millions Turks live, while there are only 3,000 Rum [Anatolian Greek]?" Greece's daily Proto Thema asked Mihaloliakos following his words.

"Jewish people founded a state on their ancient land in 1948 after centuries had passed." Mihaloliakos answered."I am not saying that we have to fight with Turks by weapons. However, we should not forget that Hellenism existed in Anatolia, Pontus and Thrace for centuries."

"Our hearts are with the Queen City [Istanbul]. Hooray Konstantinos Palaiologos!" he said. Mihaloliakos had previously attended an event related to the conquest of Istanbul.

Prelude to concentration camps ?

(Reuters) - Greece opened its first purpose-built detention centre for illegal migrants on Sunday in Athens, a week before a national election where illegal immigration has emerged as a key issue.

About 130,000 immigrants cross the country's porous sea and land borders every year, the vast majority via Turkey, and the authorities are forced to release those who are arrested because of a lack of permanent housing.

With Greece in its fifth year of recession and worries over rising crime levels, illegal immigration has become a major issue in the run up of the May 6 election.

The once-obscure far-right Golden Dawn, which wants to deport all immigrants, is among the parties that has benefitted most from the mood among voters, and is expected to win its first seats in parliament.

Not sure if this is a credible source.

More than half of all police officers in Greece voted for pro-Nazi party Golden Dawn in the elections of May 6. This is the disconcerting result of an analysis carried out by authoritative newspaper To Vima in several constituencies in Athens, where 5,000 police officers in service in the Greek capital also cast their ballot.

At some polling stations, Golden Dawn obtained 19 to 24% of votes.

Others, like Agios Panteleimonas and Kypseli, traditional strongholds of the party, reached 15 to 18%. According to the newspaper, at the 11 polling stations (from 806 to 816) located near the police station (Ellas), Golden Dawn received most votes, reaching 18.64% at station 813 and 23.67% at number 816.

Other polling stations situated at a short distance from the ones mentioned before, where police officers do not vote, recorded 12-14% of votes for the Golden Dawn party.

Whenever a country fails to recognise its problems and then because of that fails to organises a solution, radicals of all types show their ugly heads.

And what's with the Antisemitism ? Does Greece have a sizable Jewish minority ?

While poorly covered in the media, anti-Jewish acts are on the rise. The Nikaia cemetery in Piraeus was the most recent victim on Friday, 26 May. Nazi slogans were painted on more than 90 gravestones at Nikaia, the country's largest Jewish burial ground.

It was merely the latest in a series of attacks in the past month that have targeted Greece's Holocaust memorial, a synagogue in Thessaloniki and the house of film director Jules Dassin, who is of Jewish descent.

While no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, graffiti in the Thessaloniki incident included the name Hrisi Avgi (Golden Dawn), a Greek fascist organisation.

Europe is screwed. There are similar ultra facist groups in France and Spain. Germany is seeing a Neo Nazi revival. And England is seeing a soccer thug loot spree . Gotta love the Europeans. Well, the peace lasted 60 years now, time for more slaughter.
civ is right, when the money dries up, its easier for wank jobs to organize a few people and pull off shit.

Now that the supply from erstwhile colonial loot have truly dried up, and the opportunity to manipulate and intimidate ex-colonial countries have gone slim to none, the true face of supposedly civilized Europeans are coming out of the wood-works. Expect more drama and nautanki from here. Popcorn time!

To be fair, Greece was not a colonial power. Western Europeans considered them to be racially inferior (when those theories were in vogue)

I was not talking about Greece. The latter incident is truly unfortunate. But the Eurozone crisis is hardly limited to Greece. More or less all the PIIGS nations are associated with it. That's a lot of countries. And apart from that we also have England with a massive GDP to Dept ratio, don't know how well Netherlands or Belgium is doing, Austria, or other inland west European country is a complete enigma to me. But , long story short, there indeed have been an inevitable de-industrialization in Europe right now , with associated job loss and a definite perceptible loss of living standard-- exactly what they did to the rest of the world during the jackboot of colonial era. So, it is kind of hard to draw sympathy to the current plight of their descendants. That's all.

well it is but natural for people faced with despair to cling at straws that seem to offer them hope no matter how improbable that hope may be! Humans a s a species tend to let go of inhibitions and "shake hands with the devil" if you may when it begins to suit our rosy view of our own futures, this i see is much in the same light . Faced with the utter failure of successive moderate Greek politicians to reform and renew their nation the Greeks have turned to the Golden dawn hoping for a golden dawn of it's own.

You mean not since Alexander invaded the entire known world of his time?

Alexander III of Macedon (20/21 July 356 – 10/11 June 323 BC), commonly known as Alexander the Great (Greek: Ἀλέξανδρος ὁ Μέγας, Aléxandros ho Mégasiii["º] from the Greek αλέξω alexo "to defend, help" + ανήρ aner "man"), was a king of Macedon, a state in northern ancient Greece. Born in Pella in 356 BC, Alexander was tutored by Aristotle until the age of 16. By the age of thirty, he had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching from the Ionian Sea to the Himalayas.[1] He was undefeated in battle and is considered one of history's most successful commanders.[2]...Alexander's settlement of Greek colonists and the resulting spread of Greek culture in the east resulted in a new Hellenistic civilization, aspects of which were still evident in the traditions of the Byzantine Empire in the mid-15th century. Alexander became legendary as a classical hero in the mold of Achilles, and he features prominently in the history and myth of Greek and non-Greek cultures. He became the measure against which military leaders compared themselves, and military academies throughout the world still teach his tactics.[3]ii["º]

They were an imperialist power.
that is in ancient times . in medieval times they were ruled by the turkish ottoman empire and were nothing better than religiously persecuted slaves for 4 centuries . they were liberated by the british french and russians from turkish rule in the naval battle of navarino in 1829.

Alexander the Great - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
thats a really long time ago . but marauding turkish hordes migrating from central asia changed all that . the seljuk turkish sultan alp arslan defeated the greek army of emperor romanus diogenes in 1071 in the battle of manzikert and conquered anatolia from the greeks . partly out of policy and partly out of sheer barbarism the turks changed the entire topography of anatolia converting it into a dust bowl from a settled agricultural land . the majority of the formerly greek population of anatolia pershed in this .

later the turks founded the ottoman state in anatolia and under sultan mahmud the conqueror invaded and conquered constantinople and massacred its greek population and also conquered greece . constantinople was renamed istanbul .
