His family said he died from cardiovascular surgery complications.

He had heart-bypass surgery earlier this month to relieve blocked coronary arteries.
As commander of the Apollo 11 mission in July 1969, he became the first human to set foot on the moon.

He famously radioed back to Earth the historic news of "one giant leap for mankind" and spent nearly three hours walking on the moon with Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin.

A statement from Mr Armstrong's family said: "We are heartbroken to share the news that Neil Armstrong has passed away following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures.

"Neil was our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
"Neil Armstrong was also a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job.

"He served his Nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut. He also found success back home in his native Ohio in business and academia, and became a community leader in Cincinnati.

"He remained an advocate of aviation and exploration throughout his life and never lost his boyhood wonder of these pursuits.

"As much as Neil cherished his privacy, he always appreciated the expressions of good will from people around the world and from all walks of life.

"While we mourn the loss of a very good man, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people around the world to work hard to make their dreams come true, to be willing to explore and push the limits, and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves.

"For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

Astronomer Sir Patrick Moore said: "As the first man on the moon, he broke all records.
"I knew him well. He was a man who had all the courage in the world."

Jamie Burgess, from the National Space Centre, told Sky News: "It's extremely sad news. It's a terrible shock to the science community. He will be sorely missed."

Mr Armstrong and his wife Carol married in 1999 and made their home in the Cincinnati suburb of Indian Hill, but he has largely stayed out of public view in recent years.

He spoke at Ohio State University in February at an event honouring fellow astronaut John Glenn and the 50th anniversary of Mr Glenn becoming the first American to orbit the Earth.

He has more name recognition than Yuri Gagarin. Armstrong was quite humble in his fame never seeking the spotlight. Buzz Aldrin was always the hog playing up his role in the mission and using it for personal gain. The real unforgotten hero of it all is Michael Collins, nobody knows who he is but was just as important as any of them.

His death will only fuel the imaginative minds of Apollo 11 landing skeptics... Did they really land on the moon?

He was a recluse's recluse.

Once when he was asked how he felt knowing his footprints would likely stay on the moon's surface for thousands of years, he said, "I kind of hope that somebody goes up there one of these days and cleans them up".

NBC News Confuses ‘Harvest Moon’ Singer Neil Young With Moon Walker Neil Armstrong | Mediaite
NBC News can claim bragging rights to breaking the sad news of the death of astronaut and Neil Armstrong. As the first man to walk on the moon, it is a big story for all national news media.

But they will also have to accept the shame of having initially confused American hero Armstrong with 66 year old Canadian crooner Neil Young who is very much alive and preparing to release a second 2012 album in October.

When they initially reported the news, it was that "Astronaut Neil Young" had died (which remains the top cached Google news search result for "Neil Young" as of 7:37 eastern time). So why might this have confusion have occurred? Well Young did sing a song about a moon "Harvest Moon", about an "Old Man" who may have been close to death, and even wrote one called "Ambulance Blues". But the bigger problem may have been that in the rush to break the story, "Like A Hurricane" they got a slight case of "Tired Eyes."

NBC quickly corrected the error.

Remembering Neil Armstrong, First Man on the Moon | Science and Space | TIME.com
Armstrong was a man of almost preternatural imperturbability. That, of course, is true of all of astronauts—especially those from the early era. He, like so many others, was a military pilot. In his case, the piloting included 78 combat missions over Korea, during one of which his plane was crippled by antiaircraft fire. He managed to stay airborne long enough to limp back into American-held territory before he bailed out. He retired from the Navy after the war and became a test pilot for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA before there was a NASA) and flew 900 different types of aircraft—all of them fit only for test pilots because no one could say with any certainty whether the things would perform as designed or would simply shake themselves to rivets once they reached flight speed.

It wasn't until 1962 that Armstrong joined NASA — in the second crop of astronauts chosen after the glorious Original Seven. On at least three occasions that followed, the machines he flew tried to kill him.

On March 16, 1966, Armstrong and his crewmate David Scott rode Gemini VIII to orbit, commencing what was supposed to be a 5 day mission, but that lasted little more than 10 hours. Less than five hours into the flight, they chased down and docked with an Agena target vehicle — an unmanned craft significantly larger than their own Gemini capsule, designed to help astronauts practice the maneuvers they'd need to execute during later lunar missions. Not long after they docked, the paired ships began spinning out of control, barrel-rolling to the right.
