Regarding the topic - I have a theory about the nuke aspect of it. Cross posting from my post on another thread.
It is an interesting hypothesis to think of the fate of the nukes when Pakistan splits up (not 'if', but 'when'
).
When the USSR split up, the member nations peacefully agreed to let Russia have control over the entire nuke infrastructure, and voluntarily gave up their nukes - either handed it to Russia, or destroyed it.
In Pakistan's case, if the new nations (tentatively Balochistan, West Punjab (Pakjab), Pashtunistan, Mohajiristan, Sindh) decide to submit to Pakjab as the dominant entity, then we will have a case when Pakjab remains a nuke power, but greatly diminished in strength and size. It will be a landlocked rump state, and even if it has nukes, it will not be as worrying as today. The future of that new rump state itself will be a large question mark.
However, I do not see this happening in Pakistan. There will be a severe tugging and pulling for control of the nukes. Each of those new nations will have nuke scientists who were part of the current Paki nuke project. For example, Photochor Khan might choose to be a citizen of Mohajiristan, while his deputy (forgot his name, he was a Pakjabi) might choose to settle in Pakjab.
The manpower will be distributed across the new nations. More importantly, the equipment will also be distributed. There is always too much focus on Kahuta research labs, but that is only a small part of the whole thing.
The key is to swoop down on the newly created nations rapidly and strike pacts. Nation like Balochistan will be amenable to a security pact with India providing a nuke umbrella. Most probably Pashtunistan and Sindh too. If India does this dextrously and quickly enough, we can seal/seize the nuke equipment in at least 2-3 of those new nations. Speed is the essence.
Pakjab's nuke program will be destroyed, and will never recover. They can never build an arsenal from scratch again.
Of course, it is likely that the US will jump in and try to play this role that I want India to do. Being our neighbourhood, we should try our best to get in before them and clinch it.
