Sounds like they have given up on the JSF. Yeah, I know - tactical fighter, but still, no way are there gonna be 2500 JSF's ordered by the USAF and USN.
Now for Lockheed to send the taxpayers a trillion dollar research bill:laugh:

This means that their military-industrial complex does not sleep on their laurels...

Nothing funny here.

LM & Boeing are preparing to win tenders which will be opened post 2026.

That is 15yrs of advance planning.

When 2026 comes there F 35 will be outdated for 10 yrs and F 22 become seriously challeged by Russian SU 35 and Sukhoi PUK-FA. US should look for relevant alternative to counter the proliferation of new Russian fighters all around the world. (There F 22 is outnumbered and F 35 not suitable for combat with Rus fighters unless they can boast more F 22s)

Agreed, But unlike Amercian military industry other nations industrial doesn't have a capability or fund to start in advance.

Most of the companies work on particular technology based on their Military orders and requirements.

Back in 60s, Almost every develped country industries were working and inventing new type of technology because of the Cold War. They knew thier research wont go useless or bankrupt.

There were hundreds of new projects under-developments during the Soviet Era but now Sukhoi and MiGs - They dont work or research on a project unless russian military shown any kind of interest or funding.

Nothing funny here.

Preparing for future tenders is always a step ahead, But we never know the outcome.

One of the examples, Is the RAH-66 Comanche program. They spended billions of dollars on the project only to canceled it when it reached operational status. US requirements had changed and they opted for Small drone Helicopters and Endurance UCAVs over Comanches!!!

Changing of time will also change the requirements.

Its not just about replacing old fighters & filling numbers, USAF doctrine changes frequently depending on global interests.

They are seriously considering F/A-XX too.

Spinoffs of such cancelled or TDs lead to better products in turn. Knowledgebase arising from R&D keeps you ahead of time.

It has been noticed, Most Air-force like to keep old fighters, For Example F-15 variant F-15 silent Eagle, In coming days F-22 and F-35 will be updated rather going for a costly new Plane and opening a new assembly line with new budget for further research on new deign..
