World's first dog with 4 prosthetic legs
Red Heeler Naki'o lost his paws last year. His family was foresclosed in Nebraska and abandoned him inside, along with other puppies and the mother. The dogs barely survived winter in the freezing basement. Naki'o stepped into an icy puddle, and his paws froze. After amputation at the animal shelter, Naki'o could only crawl.
Christie Tomlinson, Naki'o's new mom, raised the money to get him two prosthetic back legs at Orthopets, a Denver-based company that brings to animals the same orthotic devices used by humans. Christie raised $1,300, and Orthopets made up the difference to outfit the dog with four prosthetic paws for free — the company's founder, Martin Kaufmann, saw how much Naki'o had improved with the back bionic legs and how much he was struggling with his front paws. The whole procedure cost $4,500.
Naki'o adapted quickly, and soon learned how to use the devices. After just a few days he was running and bouncing like any other happy dog.
