Kunal, how come the tanks operate in the silent killer mode?

Also, why there is hunter killer config for this tanks without any APS?
Silent mode is when tank engines are switch off in dug in position or in a laid ambush, To power the equipment on board their is a small generator which create Low noise & charges batt which gives power to electronics and gun turret in the tank..

Hardkill APS do have radars / Sensor to locate incoming rounds, these system consume power also if on in silent mode enemy can identify tank location by tracking the Origin of radar waves emitted by its APS, Hence in silent mode APS is not wise..

Many tanks dont have APS coz in most tank to tank duels their is not enough time to defend rather one best fires on other vulnerable points, Crew are too busy in tanks to look after APS, In such conditions Its the Armour of tanks counts,

APS is hellful:
1. When surrounded by Infantry ( RPGS & ATGMs )..
2. Destroy or deflect incoming ATGM from Infantry fortification or Vehicle mounted ATGMS carriers..

Arjun is such a Good Tank. Why the Army is not ordering it in High Numbers? What the Hell is the reason? The cost? I mean if you are giving funds every year back to the Government because you are unable to spend it then how is Arjun costly and it is way better than T-90S still they have only ordered 248 Arjun's. What could be the reason?

Its a dead project!! DRDO will use the upgraded Abhay to bid for FICV(Futuristic infantry combat vehicle) against private players.

The original requirment to replace T-72 via T-90 is half done as the price of T-90s now exceeded Arjun MK-1, But keeping in mind that T-90S uses same logestic chain as T-72M1 so it was more familiar / Acceptable than Indo - Western hybrid deigned Arjun MK-1, Now Army cannot effort to have more T-90S so T-72M1 being upgraded..

FMBT is on drawing board and it meant to replace rest of T-72M1 by 2020 or so..

Abhay was a technology demonstration only..

Their is no T-90M yet operational in any service, Its Russian T-90S..

The hardware denied by Russian,We are Installing such systems from Israel, Sweden & France which are not on Indian T-90S..
After all this upgrades Indian T-90S will be same or better than Russian T-90S..

Arjun on other hand is expecting same if DRDO couldn't..

Despite two years of labour, the Army's tank managers, the Directorate General of Mechanised Forces (DGMF), have been unable to decide on a suitable design.

Several of these experts told Business Standard that the DGMF's problems stem from its decision to start designing a tank all over again. Instead of building on two decades of experience in designing the indigenous Arjun tank, by moving onto an advanced version of the Arjun, the Army is going back to the start line.

Experts at the seminar — including Israeli tank legend, Maj Gen Yossi Ben-Hanan, who designed that country's successful Merkava tank — pointed out that tank design is evolutionary, each design building upon the previous one.

The Israelis began designing their Merkava-1 MBT in 1970; today they have the world-class Merkava-4. The Russians started in 1940 with the T-32 tank; that experience led to the T-55; the T-72 followed, which was further refined to today's T-90.

India has rejected this well-tested path. The Combat Vehicles R&D Establishment (CVRDE) in Chennai, which has designed the Arjun, is now offering an improved Arjun-2 with more modern electronics. But last month, the Army's top tank-man, Lt Gen D Bhardwaj, trashed two decades of indigenous design work on the Arjun; he declared that the Army would buy just 124 Arjuns for its 4,000-tank fleet. On July 23, Maj Gen Yossi Ben-Hanan warned the audience, "A decision taken today to build an Indian tank will yield an MBT only 15 years hence."

And for those 15 years, Russia is poised to fill the Indian inventory, just as it has for the last 35 years. It is learned that Moscow has seriously violated the 2001 contract to supply India with 310 Russian-built T-90s and then transfer the technology, materials and components to build another 1,000 in India.

Seven years after that contract was signed, not a single T-90 has rolled out of Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF), Avadi, where they are to be built. Senior MoD sources tell that Russia has failed to provide India with critical technologies and components needed for T-90 manufacture.

Russia has not been sued for this breach of contract; instead it has been rewarded. Last December, India ordered 347 more fully-built T-90s. A senior MoD officer dealing directly with purchases points out that this will delay the indigenous manufacture of T-90s even further, since the Russian plant cannot transfer any components or materials until it meets the fresh Indian order.

Meanwhile, the 310 T-90s, which have been delivered by Russia and introduced into service, are not battle worthy. The crucial Fire Control System (FCS), through which the tank fires at the enemy, has failed to function in Indian summers. An obliging Russian industry offered to sell India "tank air conditioners", though no other tank in our inventory needs or uses air-conditioning.

The Russian air-conditioners were put through trials, during which the tank driver fainted from heatstroke. Now the MoD has floated a global tender for air-conditioning the T-90s.

Arjun Mk-2 will be 90% Indigenous

India's locally developed Main battle tank which has been heavy criticized for been using high percentage of imported components then the locally developed technologies will see high percentage of local technology in its new avatar Arjun MK-2 which will hit its production by 2014 .

Arjun MK-2 will field locally developed new and improved 1500 hp engine, replacing its German engine which features in the Arjun Mk-1, new variant will also have performance improvement in areas like automatic target locating, tracking and destruction.

DRDO confirms that remaining 10 % of the imported contents will mostly consistent of Hydraulic and electronics systems, like Laser Warning Control System (LWCS) which will be of Israeli origin, DRDO plans to make more improvements in Arjun MK-2 to carry out urban warfare effectively.

Indian army has already raised its first Arjun regiment in 2009and will have first 124 Arjun Mk-1 variant and has already confirmed orders for more 124 Arjun MK-2 and numbers will go up to 500 Arjun MBT till new Main Battle Tank known as Futuristic Main Battle Tank (FMBT) currently under development by DRDO hits production in 2020 .

DRDO has already told media that Arjun MkII tanks will go for summer trials this year and later for winter trials at the end of 2011and DRDO has 93 upgrades lined up for the new tank but first batch of Arjun Mk-2 will get 56 upgrades and later (around 80 MBT) will get all 93 planned upgrades, this has been done to keep the production line running and later first batch will get remaining upgrades too.

Who is designing the engine? DRDO or some private company? 90% is more than sufficient to induct Arjun. DRDO real quick in MKII.

i think the article about importing a large % of israeli and french components for arjun mk2 which appeared on force magazine is not true based on this latest article.

MKII ready for trials:

http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/gene...s/awx/2011/05/11/awx_05_11_2011_p0-321387.xml

"DRDO has already begun work on the improvements required for the Mk. II tanks, and about 20 improvements have already been completed," a defense ministry official says. The two-phase project was cleared in 2010.

"After completing technical trials, the army will validate the major improvements carried out in the Phase I and II plans. This is scheduled during June 2011 and July 2012," the official says.

Why MBT Arjun Isn't Part Of The Army's Current Wargame

There's a good deal of curiosity out there (and some speculation) about why India's indigenous Arjun main battle tank was kept out of the current corps-level exercise Vijayee Bhava that's on in 2,400 sq-km of territory not far from where the Arjuns recently entered operational service. Well for an official word (cue, conspiracy theorists), I put the question on Thursday afternoon to the Army's Western Commander Lt Gen Shankar Ghosh, under whose command (HQ: Chandimandir) the exercise is being conducted. He said, "It's very simple. I don't have any Arjuns at Western Command. I cannot use what I do not have under me."

The Arjun regiment (75th Armoured) comes under the Army's South-Western Command, headquartered in Jaipur, a theatre formation that apparently had nothing to do with the current exercise in terms of asset contributions. The Vijayee Bhava exercise currently deploys a large number of T-90 and T-72 tanks from regiments under the Western Command.

There's extensive coverage on Livefist of the Arjun saga, its trials against the T-90 and its final acceptance by a reputedly reluctant Army. Just realised I hadn't posted about the Arjun for almost a year. I was dodging Grad rockets in Libya the day the tanks entered operational service. Oh well.
