India receives first Mil Mi-17-V5 Helicopters


The first batch of Mil Mi-17-V5 transport helicopters have been delivered to the Indian air force as part of an 80-aircraft order signed in December 2008.


Manufactured by Kazan Helicopters, a subsidiary of Russian Helicopters, the medium twin aircraft are equipped with a KNEI-8 avionics suite.


The Klimov VK2500-powered aircraft have strengthened gearboxes to enable high-altitude operations, addressing a key requirement that emerged following performance inadequacies with India's current Mi-17s.

India's air force operates more than 200 Mi-8/17-type rotorcraft.

This is good news as we were already facing a shortage of Helicopters.

Is there a deadline when the contract has to be completed.

  • patrolling;
  • transportation of up to 12 casualties on stretchers, accompanied by medical staff;
  • emergency medical care in field conditions;
  • lifting, loading and unloading the cargoes in flight.
P.S: Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant does not make Mil-17s any more.

Good news. We must have plans to manufacture Mi-17s in India, much like we do for Su-30 MKIs, Hawks, Jaguars, T-90s etc.

do this chopper will have night flying capabillity ,otherwise it will be not fit to be main workhorse of iaf

Nope, Kazan is in Tatarstan and Ulan-Ude is in Buryatia, both in Russia.
And I pray that it remains so. There was this article that was mentioning that Russia due to a fall in supply chain will be looking towards China to manufacture and re-sell the Mi-17s worldwide. That made me skip a heartbeat. Russia is politically useless in front of Chinese defiance especially now and imagine what a situation we'd have been if that had become reality.

It doesn't matter. What is there to stop PRC from cloning others' products? They are quite good at that.

Probably we should increase the orders of the current one's !

Actually he must have been referring to only clones being produced and the originals running out of production !

India set to order 59 more Russian Mi-17-V5 helicopters

NEW DELHI: Fighter jets may don the main strike role in warfare but helicopters too play a critical part, in both wartime and peacetime, with their reconnaissance, logistical and battlefield-support capabilities. After some setbacks, the armed forces are again pressing the throttle to achieve their aim of inducting around 900 helicopters in the coming decade.

The " rotary birds" in the pipeline include 384 light-utility and observation, 139 medium-lift, 90 naval multi-role, 65 light combat, 22 heavy-duty attack, 15 heavy-lift, 12 VVIP, five maritime early-warning and 86 Dhruv advanced light helicopters.

While contracts for some of these helicopters are being executed after being inked earlier, like the Rs 3,726 crore-deal for the dozen AW-101 three-engine choppers to ferry VVIPs, others are still in the planning stage.

The armed forces want all the projects to get going at the earliest to plug operational gaps and replace ageing fleets. IAF, for instance, is moving towards finalizing a second contract with Russia for another 59 Mi-17-V5 helicopters after the phased delivery of the first 80 of these medium-lift "rotary birds" began in September.

"Of the 80 Mi-17s ordered under the $1.34-billion deal in 2008, the first squadron has come up in Bhatinda. IAF will get 26 of these choppers by end-December, with the second squadron coming up in Srinagar by March. All the 80 will be inducted by 2014," said a senior official.

"The 59 more Mi-17s, which will cost around $1 billion, will be ordered under the follow-on clause in the first contract. They will also be weaponized for combat operations like the first 80. The new Mi-17s will also make it possible for IAF to deploy additional choppers for logistical support in anti-Naxal operations," he added.

Navy, too, is keen to kick-start the induction of 90 multi-role helicopters (MRHs), with both combat and search-and-rescue capabilities, to replace the older Sea King helicopters and meet the requirements of a growing maritime force.

At present, the field trial evaluation report of European NH-90 and American Sikorsky-70B helicopters is being examined for the first over Rs 2,000 crore contract of 16 MRHs. "For the second contract for 75 MRH, the initial proposals of five aviation majors are being studied," said an official.

Boeing is set to bag the $1.4-billion contract to supply 22 missile-armed gunships after its AH-64D Apache Longbow did much better than Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant's Mi-28N `Night Hunter' in the field trials.

But the long-drawn acquisition of 384 light helicopters to replace Army and IAF's ageing Cheetah and Chetak fleets -197 to be acquired from a foreign vendor for over Rs 3, 000 crore, while 187 to be manufactured by HAL - is yet to take shape.

Dogged by several controversies, the technical evaluation report of Russian Kamov Ka-226T and Eurocopter AS 550 C3 Fennec is being studied by the defence ministry before one contender is selected for commercial negotiations.

Another batch of four Russian Mi-17 helicopters has been delivered to India in accordance with the contract, RIA Novosti reports with reference to a source close to Russian military industrial sector.

"The helicopters have been delivered to Chandigarh. Later they will be assembled and a series of test flights will be performed and after that the vehicles will be handed over to the Indian party", - the source noted.

The first batch of the helicopters has been delivered to India in November 2011 in accordance with the contract on delivery of 80 helicopters, signed in 2008. "A total of 21 helicopters will be delivered this year", - the source noted.

India is already operating about 150 Mi-8s and Mi-17s.

guys i have heard that india has ordered the mi-8 ovt gunship as the lastest 59 chopper deal from russia.is it true?n does mi-8 ovt has the capability to transport troops as well?sorry for these silly questions but i m a newbie in this field!:wave:

Pentagon Mishandling Mi-17 Helo Fleet : IG Report

The U.S. Defense Department has bungled the managing a fleet of Russian-built Mil Mi-17 Hip helicopters, the Pentagon's inspector general said in a report released Jan. 5.

The Pentagon has spent $1.6 billion over the last five years on what it calls non-standard rotary wing aircraft (NSRWA) and plans to spend an additional $1 billion in the future.

"DoD officials did not adequately manage the acquisition and support of NSRWA," the report reads. "Specifically, DoD officials were unable to identify a comprehensive list of all DoD-owned and supported Mi-17s, their total ownership costs, and all planned requirements in support of these aircraft."
That happened because the Pentagon didn't treat the program as a major procurement effort and instead took an ad hoc approach to managing the buy, the report says, and as a result DoD didn't get the most for its money.
The report recommends the Pentagon establish the NSRWA effort as a formal program, draw up proper documentation, consolidate various offices to which the program reports and designate the U.S. Army as executive agent for the aircraft.
