Baby killed and eight wounded in suspected terror attack in Jerusalem

A three-month old baby was killed in Jerusalem and eight other people wounded – one seriously – in what Israel police described as a "terrorist attack" when a speeding car drove onto a pavement crowded with pedestrians alighting from the city's light railway.

The child killed in the attack was later named as Chaya Zissel Braun, a US citizen, whose family had been visiting the Western Wall.

Video footage posted on social media showed a car on the main road slowing slightly before crossing to the train tracks and climbing on to the station pavement, ploughing through the people standing on it.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening at about 6pm on Road 1 – one of Jerusalem's main arterial roads – as passengers were getting off one of the city's light railway trains at a stop on Ammunition Hill near the national police headquarters.

A paramedic who was at the scene said he treated the baby's mother for a serious head wound and that the car had hit the baby's stroller.

The driver of the car, a 20-year-old resident of Silwan in East Jerusalem named as Abed a-Rahman a-Shaludi, was shot by police officers as he apparently attempted to flee the scene. He died a few hours later.

Although Shaludi's family told journalists later that the incident had been an accident, Israeli officials said he was a former Palestinian prisoner and "a member of Hamas" who had served several prison sentences including for preparing petrol bombs.

Silwan, a neighbourhood bordering on Jerusalem's old walled city, has been a focal point of violence in past weeks with Palestinians protesting against Israeli settlers moving into houses in the predominantly Palestinian-populated district.

Following the incident Silwan residents clashed with police, who responded to rocks and petrol bombs with stun grenades that could be heard echoing across the city.

Police clashed with stone-throwing protesters elsewhere in the city as well, with one person injured and two more arrested.

Terror in Jerusalem: Baby killed, 7 hurt in attack at Light Rail station

A 3-month-old baby girl was killed and seven other people were wounded Wednesday evening when a Palestinian plowed his car into a crowd of people waiting at the Ammunition Hill station of Jerusalem's Light Rail.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the car struck the train station near the national headquarters of the police force.

He said police were investigating but all signs pointed to an intentional attack. "There is a strong possibility that it was a terror attack," he said.

Two men in their 20s also were taken to Hadassah Medical Center on Mount Scopus with light wounds. Hadassah at Ein Kerem took in three wounded women, one in serious condition and two lightly hurt

This is not the first time the capital has seen such attacks, and recent weeks have seen a number incidents on the train.

On October 12, the Jerusalem Light Rail came under a hail of stones in five separate attacks. All of the incidents took place in the train's East Jerusalem stations, near Shuafat, highlighting the perils the rapid transit system faces in the Palestinian parts of the city.

The recent two months have seen a rise in the number of attacks on the train, especially in the Palestinian parts of the city. Those using the Light Rail for their daily commute say incidents in the Shuafat and Beit Hanina stations have become routine.

In August, a pedestrian was killed and six other people were wounded when a terrorist went on the rampage in an industrial digger in central Jerusalem.

On July 22, three weeks after the previous Jerusalem bulldozer attack, another tractor driver went on a rampage on the capital's King David Street on Tuesday afternoon. The police reported that the terrorist was shot dead and that at least 18 people were injured in the incident.

On July 2, three women were killed and at least 30 more people were injured when a bulldozer driven by a Palestinian resident of east Jerusalem trampled over pedestrians and vehicles and plowed into two buses in downtown Jerusalem.

1 killed as driver plows into Jerusalem crowd in terror attack

An Arab driver plowed his vehicle into a crowd of people at a light rail station along the seam-line between East and West Jerusalem late Wednesday morning, killing one Border Police officer, and injuring 14 more.

"Ten people were wounded, one of whom is in critical condition," emergency services spokesman Zaki Heller told AFP.

Magen David Adom paramedics reported that two people were seriously hurt, and three moderately injured. Policemen were among the injured, according to Internal Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch.

Palestinian Ma'an news agency identified the terrorist as 48-year-old Ibrahim al-Akary. Hamas's Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades tweeted out pictures it said showed the man, who it called Akazi, one of which showed him lying on the ground after being shot.

Police said the driver hit several pedestrians at a light rail station on the corner of Bar Lev and Shimon Ha'Zadik streets, close to the Border Police headquarters on Route 1, and then continued driving along the tracks, hitting several cars along the way until finally crashing to a halt.

Akary got out of the commercial van with a metal bar and began attacking a group of policemen before Border Police at the scene shot and killed the attacker.

The attacker's brother, Musa Muhammad al-Akary, served 19 years in an Israeli prison for the 1992 kidnapping and murder of IDF soldier Nissim Toledano in Lod. He was released in the 2011 deal that freed IDF soldier Gilad Shalit from Hamas captivity, and was expelled to Turkey
