NEW DELHI: Five Indian peacekeepers escorting a United Nations convoy in South Sudan have been killed in an ambush by rebels, the Indian foreign ministry announced on Tuesday.

"Five peacekeepers from India with UNMISS (United Nations Mission in South Sudan) killed in ambush in Jonglei," foreign ministry spokesman SyedAkbaruddin wrote on Twitter.

He confirmed the deaths to AFP and said the soldiers had been killed while "escorting a UN convoy".

Jonglei has been the scene of widespread ethnic conflict since South Sudan became independent in July 2011. Much of the trouble has been in Pibor county, where the UN peacekeeping force is based.

An Indian soldier was shot and wounded there in March amid high tensions about an imminent government crackdown, and a UN helicopter was downed in December.

UNMISS chief Hilde Johnson had said in March that the government was expected to soon launch an offensive against fighters loyal to local rebel leader David Yau Yau in Jonglei.

India is a major contributor to UN peacekeeping forces around the world and has suffered losses in the past.

In 2010, rebels hacked to death three Indians in their camp in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Akbaruddin said that the Indian foreign ministry was arranging for the bodies of its peacekeepers in South Sudan to be returned home.

RIP to the brave ones who risk their lives to maintain peace in foreign country.

I wrote in the other thread about my friend coming under ambush and how his colleague got it in the spine and is now paralyzed. My friend will be back in Sudan next week. I pray for him and his safety and our other boys serving there. Its not a good place to be in. Worse if your country does not back you up with supplies too well.

It appears India supplies one of the largest troop contingents to UN peacekeeping.
Yes. India is the largest contributor to UN peacekeeping forces.

Another example of India's unconditional commitment to world peace.

May those souls rest in peace.

George Patton said:

No man ever won a war by dying for his country. Wars were won by making the other poor bastard die for his. You don't win a war by dying for your country.
Why should that be any less true for peacekeeping as for war?

War against organized state is different from what is faced in Sudan.

Moreover they died for UN flag not just country India.

Do Indian soldiers have as much allegiance to UN as to their own country?

Perhaps a subject for a separate thread.

How does one compare allegiance ?

Same question can be asked about NATO forces.
When you say they died for India and UN a comparison could be made.

Where US soldiers serve, in Afghanistan for example, they are the bulk of NATO forces. They probably see NATO troops as peripheral. Probably they same with MNF in Sinai.

the first one is Pakistani.
Countries have enough English speaking solders who don't need so much supply as American.
RIP.
