Iran car explosion 'kills nuclear scientist' in Tehran

A university lecturer and nuclear scientist has been killed in a car explosion in north Tehran, reports say.
Iranian media sources named the casualty as Mostafa Ahmadi-Roshan, Reuters news agency reports.
The blast happened when a motorcyclist stuck a bomb on the side of the car, says Iran's semi-official Fars news agency.
Several Iranian nuclear scientists have been assassinated in Iran in recent years.
Tehran has blamed the killings on Israel and the US. Both countries deny the accusations.
Local sources said Wednesday's blast took place at a faculty of Iran's Allameh Tabatai university.
Two others were reportedly also injured in the blast, which took place near Gol Nabi Street, in the north of the capital.

Mr Ahmadi-Roshan, 32, was a graduate of oil industry university and supervised a department at Natanz uranium enrichment facility in Isfahan province, Fars reported.
The latest attack comes almost two years to the day since Massoud Ali Mohammadi, a 50-year-old university lecturer at Tehran University, was killed by a remote-controlled bomb as he left his home in Tehran on 12 January 2010.
Reports at the time described Dr Mohammadi as a nuclear physicist, but it later appeared that he was an expert in another branch of physics.
There was also confusion as to whether the attack had any domestic political overtones because of reports about his apparent links to an opposition presidential candidate.
However, in August 2011, an Iranian man - Majid Jamali Fashi - was sentenced to death for the killing, with state authorities saying he was paid by Israel's Mossad spy agency. Israel does not comment on such claims.
Of the latest attack, Fars reports that the bombing method appears similar to another 2010 bombing which injured former university professor Fereydun Abbasi-Davani, now the head of the country's atomic energy organisation.
There has been much controversy over Iran's nuclear activities.

Three other Iranian scientists were killed in 2010 and 2011 when their cars blew up in similar circumstances. At least two of the scientists had also been working on nuclear activities.

TEHRAN: An Iranian nuclear scientist was killed and two people injured when a magnetic bomb attached to a car by a duo on a motorbike exploded outside a Tehran university on Wednesday, Iranian news agencies said.

The person killed was identified by several media as Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, a scientist who worked on separating gases at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility, according to the website of a different university from which he graduated around a decade ago.

“This morning a motorbiker attached a bomb to a Peugeot 405, which exploded,” the deputy governor of Tehran province, Safar Ali Bratloo, was quoted as saying by the ILNA news agency.

The explosion occurred outside the east Tehran campus of Allameh Tabatai University, at its social sciences faculty.Ahmadi Roshan was killed and the two wounded passengers were taken to hospital, Bratloo said.

Sharif University, Tehran’s elite technical university where the slain scientist had studied, said Ahmadi Roshan was specialised in making polymeric membranes used to separate gas. Iran uses gas separation to enrich uranium.

Three other Iranian scientists were killed in 2010 and 2011 when their cars blew up in similar circumstances. At least two of the scientists had also been working on nuclear activities.

One of the attacks occurred exactly two years ago, on January 11, 2010, killing scientist Masoud Ali Mohammdi.

The current head of Iran’s atomic organisation, Fereydoun Abbasi, escaped another such attempt in November 2010, getting out of his car with his wife just before the attached bomb exploded.

Those attacks were viewed by Iranian officials as assassination operations carried out by Israel’s Mossad intelligence service, possibly with help from US counterparts.

The latest blast comes amid extremely high international tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme, which the West and Israel believe conceals research to develop an atomic bomb.

Israel has threatened to launch air strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The United States has said “all options are on the table” in terms of dealing with Iran — including military action.

Tehran, which has repeatedly denied that its nuclear programme is for anything other than peaceful purposes, has threatened to close the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the entrance to the Gulf if it is attacked. Twenty per cent of the world’s oil flows through that strait.Wednesday’s car explosion followed confirmation on Monday by the International Atomic Energy Agency that Iran had started uranium enrichment at a fortified underground bunker southwest of Tehran, in Fordo.

The United States, Britain, France, Germany and Italy have viewed that development with alarm, saying it was a violation of UN Security Council resolutions on Iran.

This is what you call siege... Stuxnet, exploding weapons lab, economic embargo, Nuke scientists assassinated, closest and most powerful ally under siege as well, the USN at the gates, US Marines at West and East, not to mention SA on military footing... I think we're on the brink.

I wonder if there's an element of internal struggle involved as well?

There's no doubt that internal elements are helping whoever are targeting those scientists... But are there oppositions like what we've seen in Lybia and and what we're seeing in Syria, this is the big question...

It may not be surprising if we get breaking news that US Carrier Group has initiated attack on Iran and Israel has started aerial bombardment of Irani nuke sites.

If I were them I wouldn't do that. Aside from the military build up there is a parallel PR build up...The party who blinks first losses in this battle.

In this case I am inclined to believe Iran, the Moosad has a long history of assasinations. The CIA is less known for assasination of high profile targets.
