Turkey will strike four countries, including Russia, from its list of external security threats in a bid to revise the country's national security strategy, national media reported on Monday.

Once Turkey was going to place missiles pointed at Russia during the 1960's which led to the Cuban missile crisis, interesting how things have changed.

Part of Turkeys move to de-link itself from NATO. It is steadily moving away from western camp, wonder what's the thinking behind all the moves Turkey has made in recent times. Taking Indias example, its working overtime to get into western camp while turkey is moving away.

US issues arms deal ultimatum to Turkey

Published: August 15 2010 23:05 | Last updated: August 15 2010 23:05 President Barack Obama has personally warned Turkey's prime minister that unless Ankara shifts its position on Israel and Iran it stands little chance of obtaining the US weapons it wants to buy. Mr Obama's warning to Recep Tayyip Erdogan is particularly significant as Ankara wants to buy American drone aircraft – such as the missile-bearing Reaper – to attack the Kurdish separatist PKK after the US military pulls out of Iraq at the end of 2011.

the greatest threat to Turkey's sovereignty is from Kurdish separatists. It seems that Turkey has realised that having Russia on their side would help. For years Britain supported PKK(Kurdish Workers Party)separatists. even allowed them to run a tv station for 5 years. Finally after much diplomatic presuure from Turkey, they revoked the tv license and detained several pro PKK activists in Britain. that said MI6 still covertly assists PKK. Having Russia on their side would help if Uncle wishes to redraw ME map (with an independent Kurdistan).

Well Turkey seems to have given up hope of joining EU anytime soon and therefore is trying to improve its neighbourhood situation. However, if we take a note of the defense equipment dependency of Turks, I don't think they can completely ignore the West for at least another 3 decades. Turkey has rapidly emerged as a developing industrial complex country far more efficient than our sarkari dodos considering their speed of modernization. Whether it is the development of their MBT, UCAV or even their basic trainer jet Hurkuz, they're emerging really strong.
