JAISALMER: A youth died after completing a five-kilometre run for recruitment in BSF at Sriganganagar sector headquarters on Thursday. The cause of death is believed to be heatstroke. The incident has put a question mark over the timing of recruitment tests by paramilitary forces in the peak summer months of May and June.

In the past few days, over 15 youths have fallen unconscious during physical tests at various recruitment centres in Rajasthan, sources said. Though the BSF authorities have changed the timing of physical tests to 6 am, many youths are still not able to bear the heat. BSF sources said that on Thursday in Sriganganagar sector headquarters, one Narendra Kumar Meena, a resident of Ajitgarh in Sikar`s Srimadhopur tehsil, fell unconscious after completing the five-km run.

He was brought to BSF health centre where doctors declared him dead. The recruitment tests for constables in paramilitary forces are held in May and June. This is proving to be a big problem especially in Rajasthan where the mercury touches 45-46 degrees Celsius.

As per the rule, a candidate has to run barefoot, and if he is unable to bear the heat, he fails to qualify for the next round. A large number of youths have suffered heatstroke during the race. BSF sources confirming t...

The test must be conducted in an Air-conditioned indoor 5-km track. Why stop there? Why not deploy all recruits in Air-conditioned malls and 5-star hotels away from danger?

these recruiting officers and officials treat the youths as Goats and Sheep's ...and see the result. Who will take the responsibility, I guess no one. A family has lost his son but nobody cares .

I wonder if they had emergency first-aid help at the venue. A lot of such accidents can be taken care of with proper medical facility on the spot. @Mad Indian - what do you suggest?

Please don't comment on something without gathering sufficient information. In most of the cases they die on spot because of shock and exhaustion before any first-aid may arrive.

Serious candidates practice it over several months before facing the actual test. 5 km "sprint" is not a joke, it cannot be done without rigorous practice and all candidates are supposed to be aware of this fact.

BSF did not force the youth to run the full 5km on gun point, tracks are typically 400 meters and 5 km is covered over several laps. Some of these jobless youth are so desperate that they try to pull more than their weight, try to force themselves beyond their physical abilities.

A family has lost it's son, but the SON was at fault.

While killing yourself for a job is stupid but I am sure with proper medical checks on the venue this can be avoided. 5 km is not too much.

Water replenishment in between running would have completely avoided this death. What's puzzling is even noobs practicing in schools for their 6th standards school sports meet know this. Why dint the youth in question?

And yes medical first aid would have as well. IMO both the organiser and the youth is at fault with organizer being more responsible for this since they should have anticipated such risks in this training

You should see these recruitment events to know what these poor chaps have to go through.

1) There is complete chaos to arrive at the venue. Most of the times, public transport is not able to meet the needs.
2) Given above reason, half of the folks are hungry and in summer (probably thirsty) when they arrive there before the test begins.

letting a person die during a 5km run is ridiculous.

I agree. An organization like bsf should have anticipated the risks of conducting such exercises.

I think they had forgotten that the people they selecting are not yet training to fight exhaustion and are only normal human beings. I hope someone among the organiser is punished or made accountable for this incident.

5 km is not too much, but you need to add two things to this:
  1. Rajasthan
  2. June
