Young India Says 'Yes' to Military Rule, 'No' to Inter-Religious Mingling: Survey

Mumbai: A survey of high school and college students from 11 cities has revealed that about half of them would prefer military rule over a democracy. But perhaps what is more is that an astonishing 65 percent 'agree' that boys and girls from different religions should not mingle.

The survey also threw up other shockers. While more than half of the students surveyed believed that women 'provoke' men with the way they dress, close to half of them say women have no choice but to accept violence.

The survey, conducted by Children's Movement for Civic Awareness (CMCA), a Bengaluru-based NGO, covered about 10,000 high-school and college students from 11 cities across the country.

On the question of democracy, 50 per cent of the respondents preferred military rule to democracy. The same number insisted that migrants should go back 'home'.

"The state the country is in, we need an authoritative leader. We need someone who tells us what to do", said Soumitra, a student. However, there were other who held the opposite point of view. "I am disappointed. We will be the future generation, driving the country in different fields. We have to go to our roots and eliminate these things," said Tejashri, a student at the Welingkar Institute.

The findings of the survey are symptomatic of the times, according to Manjunath Sadashiva, director of CMCA. "This shows that the youth does not have a critical appreciation of the liberties and freedom one enjoys in a democracy. It shows the cynicism and disillusionment with the political scenario, but doesn't justify the preference for an authoritarian government or military rule," he says. "Our society is going to be further fragmented. Social tension is going to increase, and not decrease, if these youngsters are not equipped with necessary skills, attitudes and values to live in a multi-culturual democracy," Mr Sadashiva added.

At least we can have surveys and have our say without fearing a bullet can go through our head... we can debate as well even if it includes kids who are not mature enough. :truestory:

In Pakistan there is no say but all are trampled under Army/ISI/Terrorists boots. No hope for a Democracy/Freedom which they crave for.

We know what happened to Malalalalalala.

btw what happened to Azadi March?
@Blackwater, kya Pakistan azad ho gaya???

Not alarming, cuz such surveys gives the think tanks certain pointers to work with and place correctional measures

What is alarming is your level of ignorance!! :taunt:

You prove again and again that you are incapable of having a mature debate.

The survey is misleading, most of the people ,except some who has seen the emergency days,in India do not know about military rule.

The survey report is aimed at raising the tensions among the minorities.

By surveys we can get insights about what people think.

This is a great things because we can always put people on correct path ONLY when we can know what they think irrespective of how mature they are.

Surveys may or may not be right and the credibility of the sources (NDTV in this case) can matter since some might like to create confusion.Being part of Survey Programming and Data(not now) I know ins and out of how the data can easily mislead.

I cant stoop too low to your level of (im)maturity even If I try too hard!

Debate? Sorry I cant have mullah debates the way they have in Pakistan where they take facts out of arse and convince people to have it.
Facts are too much for a Pakistani to handle no matter where the heck in the world they are

    As if I care!!!

Re: Young India Says 'Yes' to Military Rule, 'No' to Inter-Religious M

Come on they have interviewed some high school going boys & girls. Its obvious that school students prefer to see Military men around them, they don't know the meaning of military rule. You know these IA fanboyz. Even i was one during my school days thinking about our mighty army.

Coming to inter- religious marriage, off- course they will say NO to it, because they feel its taboo marrying someone from other religion. They are just kids & if you ask them about marriage & marrying someone of other religion obviously they will say NO because mummy & papa will kick their butts.

Appreciated if the sample size representation was students with 16-18+ age.

Also this is covered by NDTV, may be they want to construe that Modi government is saffranizing the education because of which younger generation in India is against inter religion Marriage. Military rule because BJP government is not good.

    NDTV is crazy.

Re: Young India Says 'Yes' to Military Rule, 'No' to Inter-Religious M

I was a lot like these boys and girls when I was 14. I've had strong opinions on several subjects.

Forget about tolerance towards other religions, we used to roam around in small gangs of "like minded dorks". We've had secret societies, always scheming against other "secret societies".

Asking kids about marriage and commitments? How mature!

The beauty of such surveys is that age groups can be selected depending on what type of responses one has pre-decided to cater to an agenda.

Waiting for Western media to pick this one up and open a debate about whether India is really secular and free under the new PM.

Re: Young India Says 'Yes' to Military Rule, 'No' to Inter-Religious M

Only a thorough moron would interview high school kids about national rule, policy and inter-religious relations. But then, NDTV isn't exactly known for being sensible.

The same survey should be conducted among the 20-25 year old age group. The results will be radically different.

What an utterly idiotic "survey". Was done among a group of CPI-ML supporters?

Such open responses allow us to formulate governance, public debate and discussions so that we keep moving forward as a pluralistic and progressive society.
