Women 'remove hijabs to get work' as ethnic minorities face more discrimination

Minority ethnic women face more discrimination when applying for jobs, a report has found Photo: ALAMY

Ethnic minority women are removing their hijabs and making their names sound more "English" in an attempt to beat discrimination and find a job, a report has suggested.

Some removed hijabs worn for religious reasons, while others attempted to sound more "English" by adapting their names, it is claimed.

The report suggested some employers believed Muslim women would stop working after having children, according to the Guardian newpaper.

It states: "Pakistani and Bangladeshi women are particularly affected, with 20.5 per cent being unemployed compared to 6.8 per cent of white women, with 17.7 per cent of black women also being unemployed.

"Discrimination was found to be present at every stage of the recruitment process – when assessing applications, during interviews, at recruitment agencies and also in the workplace itself.

"Muslim women who wear the hijab reported discrimination and women of all three ethnic groups reported questions asked about intentions regarding marriage and children.

Does unemployment necessarily mean discrimination? Could it be that due to cultural reasons, they may be either not interested in working outside their homes or did not focus on career-enhancing skills? I suspect this could be so in the case of Pakistani and Bangladeshi women.

Rather interesting.

What's wrong if one covers one's face to ensure that one does not feel cold or have the harsh sun on their faces causing skin cancer?

Chinese have Chinese names but then they also have English names.

No one has complained of that!

According to this by the same newspaper

Unemployment among ethnic minorities costs the economy almost £8.6 billion a year in benefits and lost revenue from taxes. Half of Muslim men and three quarters of Muslim women are unemployed.
Given the likelihood of Pakis and Bangladeshis forming a major chunk of the above, three quarters of Muslim women, does not exactly translate to "20.5 per cent of the Pakistani and Bangladeshi women", does it?

So which one is it?
