A 20-year-old tribal woman was allegedly gangraped at Labhpur in Birbhum district by five persons apparently objecting to her relationship with a man from a different community.

Police said the woman was in a very critical condition at Suri Hospital and prima facie she had been sexually assaulted by five people on Tuesday night who were later arrested.

The woman’s family filed a complaint with the Labhpur police station that the incident happened following a meeting by her community leaders who decided to met out the “punishment” for her “crime” of being in love with someone outside her caste.

Refusing to divulge any details, ASP Prashanta Chowdhury said, “Prima facie, she was gangraped and we have rounded up five persons. No more details.”

The youth, with whom the girl reportedly had a love affair, has also been arrested apart from the five people from her village who were slapped with charges of gangrape and causing grievous injury to a woman, police sources said. The charges against the youth are not clear.

A section of residents told the media the incident took place after a kangaroo court of community leaders gave the shocking “verdict” but this could not be officially confirmed.

A teenaged tribal girl was paraded naked in the district four years ago for the same reason, which had sparked an outrage in the State and women’s organisations were up in arms.

Yes, India's 21st century facade barely hides its medieval heart. Every political party is guilty of failure dismantle the caste-based feudal structures.

There is a need for awareness that females cant be treated like this . Filling jails means more burden on Government .

Awareness my a#@! There are sections in the society where no amount of teaching/preching/slogans/propaganda would bring awareness.

These gutter-scums need to stay and rot in jail for at least 30 years to learn the lesson, and more to teach the other bozos what the consequence of their action could lead to.

However, just watched how media manipulated Subrata's comments and gave it an entirely different and low meaning. I am losing respect of Times Now. May be I'm growing up that I think Arnab Goswamy's show is more about bashing and proving Arnab right than actual debate.

Everyone repeat after me: there is nothing inherently "good" or "romantic" in tribal societies. There is nothing "idyllic" or "pure" about rural Indian life. These are cesspits of backwardness and stone-age mentality. Urbanization is the only way to break down these traditional stone-age societal structures.

See in this case only how the tribal girl was treated and the reason was quite simple because of the decision taken by the community leaders and this incident took place in village but have been covered by the Media .

There is a need for all the community leaders from Gram panchayats to know the criminal sections . State Governments should make it compulsory for the village heads to give verdicts after consulting district heads and keep records of all the cases .

There is lot to be done in villages and the only way here is to make it compulsory for the village panchayats and community leaders to keep records of all the cases and submit it monthly to the District Collector.

This incident occurred because of the village community leaders verdict .

All that will not work in the long term, it is like band-aid. The mentality is basically backward, and they never get access to modern and liberal thoughts. The youth of the village grow up with the same ideas and propagate those ideas. The only solution in the long run is urbanization. Massive, huge urbanization. Tier-2 cities of India need to become as big as the tier-1 cities of today, and tier-3 cities need to become as big as the tier-2 cities.

That will change India and put a stop to this kind of nonsense.

If such steps are applied for short term like 5 years or so then it can be a good start in every state which can prepare the rural people to understand more about the laws and the system of the country and as populations are less in villages it would be easier to make the rural people about the changing realities and they would be aware of all these laws even before coming to big cities. Mentality is needed to be changed so that such incidents wont take place in future .

India will forever remain a country of the future and a shithole it seems. There is no political will to take on these khap panchayats and no spending on infrastructure. Urbanization and modernization are the needs of the hour.

    Totally off-topic:

Actually, WB as a whole is NOT the land of literature and the arts, has never been - but for its upper and middle class (from lower to upper middle class") section.

As it happens the middle class, including a huge number of refugees from erstwhile East Pakistan, throngs around Kolkata which always gets more focus and have significant representation in all cities around India, that their accomplishments was considered as WB's general condition, and left's tight control on law and order (about a decade ago) prevented this sort of things from happening frequently.

Frankly, I being a Bangaal - a slang for people from other side of the border and their descendants - kind of consider that the culture has been mostly carried by the Bangaals. :p (Don't tell my wife :scared2:)

However, there are interior villages that have culture that is much different that the suburbias, and particularly the culture and education of the tribals is nowhere close to the Bengali middleclass. It is a fact not some aspersion or racism. And the poorer class in WB is like everywhere, more in liqueur and other vices, than in culture. Even, the shine of famous Bengali culture is wearing off gradually, as the new generation - particularly the upper to upper middle class section abandoning it for the more 'so-called' modern culture.

    In topic:

It was a time when rape used to be almost an unheard of incident, and even today you will see there are very few from the middle-class. However, the way Mamata have been clipping the cops' wings, no wonder the Anchors in TV are calling it criminalisation of Bengal. There's a very popular jokes taking a round among my colleagues, particularly Biharis, the Bengal is rising and Bihar is falling. Bengal will soon take Bihar's place in crime!

It is a fallacy to believe that urbanization is the panacea to gender crimes.... as if urban women are less vulnerable. We know from experience the Indian feudal patriarchal mindset coupled with poor law enforcement is behind such problems.

There are no quickfixes, but the societal outlook need to change and that too from the primary education level where women are respected. And give death penalty to convicted rapists.
