With 255 kills, he's deadliest Seal sniper in US history

LONDON: With 255 kills, 160 of them officially confirmed by the Pentagon, Chris Kyle, the retired navy Seal sniper, is the deadliest marksman in US military history.

Kyle hesitated the first time he killed a person at long range with a rifle. It was a woman who was about to attack a group of US marines with a hand grenade.

The US navy Seal was overlooking an Iraqi town from a shabby building as US forces were still invading the country. The marines didn't see the woman coming.

"Take a shot," Kyle's chief told him. Kyle stammered , "But.. " "Shoot!" the chief told him again, the Daily Mail reported. Kyle finally pulled the trigger. But after four deployments to Iraq, he learned to stop hesitating and shoot straight.

The report said that during the Second Battle of Fallujah alone, when US Marines fought running battles in streets with several thousand insurgents, he killed 40 people. His feat blows away the previous American record of 109, set by army staff Sgt Adelbert F Waldron during the Vietnam war.

Carlos Hathcock, the famed marine sniper who was the subject of the book 'One Shot, One Kill' , killed 93 people as long-range sniper in Vietnam. However, Kyle is still far from being the deadliest marksman in the world. That distinction goes to Simo Hayha, a Finnish soldier who killed 542 Soviet soldiers during World War II.

For Kyle's deadly track record as a marksman during his deployment to Ramadi , the insurgents named him 'Al-Shaitan Ramad' - the Devil of Rahmadi - and put a $20,000 bounty on his head.

Simo Häyhä - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Häyhä used a Finnish militia variant, White Guard M/28 "Pystykorva" or "Spitz", of the Russian Mosin-Nagant rifle, because it suited his small frame (5 ft 3 in/1.60 m). He preferred to use iron sights rather than telescopic sights to present a smaller target (the sniper must raise his head higher when using a telescopic sight), for more reliable visibility (a telescopic sight's glass can fog up easily in cold weather), and aid concealment (sunlight glare in telescopic sight lenses can reveal a sniper's position). Another tactic used by Häyhä was to compact the snow in front of him so that the shot would not disturb the snow and reveal his position. He also kept snow in his mouth, so that the vapor of his breath would not give him away.

In that case, Wonder how many kills would have made by a Fighter Pilot!!!

Snipers actually can see their targets, the same thing with their "spotters." So it's a relatively easy task to confirm a kill (the spotter also validates this) and then write it down in their pocket notebook (snipers are meticulous).

The snipers have their spotter scope and they can see the effect on the target.

If one see the Hollywood movies of WWII, one would see on the side of the fighter planes painted lines crossed with an oblique. That indicates the kills by that plane and pilot.

Yup, and the kill had to be confirmed by atleast one other person.

I'm going to guess that's the side of a P-47 or P-51 ca. 1945 in the European Theater.

Intresting...makes me remember Vasily Zaitsev in the movie "Enemy at the Gates" based on the battle of Stalingrad .This guy had 225 kills to his name.
