Mumbai: Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Manikrao Thakre on Monday said that his party supported the demand to rename of Dadar railway station in the city as 'Chaityabhoomi Terminus'.

State NCP was reportedly considering moving a resolution seeking renaming at a conference next month. Chaityabhoomi, the memorial of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, is in Dadar area.

"We support renaming of Dadar station as 'Chaityabhoomi'. There is a historical importance to the station and if any party has taken up the issue of renaming Dadar station, we welcome it," he said.

"We have also written a letter to the Centre in this regard and have asked it to expedite the procedure to rename the station at the earliest," Thakre told reporters here.

Asked if NCP had taken the credit for taking up the issue, he said, "We (Congress-NCP) are of same ideology and we have to go together, and the people with the same ideology should stay together."

Chaityabhoomi issue a political gimmick, says Shiv Sena-BJP

Mumbai: The opposition Shiv Sena-BJP combine today termed the reported move of NCP, an alliance partner in the ruling Democratic Front (DF) government, to rename Dadar railway station as Chaityabhoomi as a desperate attempt to woo dalits.

"Why should the ruling party, which is in power in the state and Centre make such demand when they can take a decision right away. Dalits can see through their game plan," BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde said at a joint meeting of the Shiv Sena, BJP and RPI (A) ahead of the June 9 rally.

The leaders Manohar Joshi, Ramdas Athavale present at the meeting vowed to make the proposed rally a huge success.

The NCP recently indicated that it was in favour of renaming Dadar railway station as Chaityabhoomi after RPI(A) chief Ramdas Athavale snapped ties with the Congress-NCP and crossed over to the saffron combine.

Chaityabhoomi derived its name after cremation of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar in 1956 and is located near Dadar Chowpatty in Mumbai. The site holds significance for dalits as they throng to it in large numbers on the occasion of the death anniversary of the Father of Constitution.

    LOL

These people are still not so mature.
When sena wants to rename Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar, cong-ncp has problem. And sena has issues with dadar station's renaming.

Have been watching renaming saga of this & that & some city square for decades. Things havent changed a bit.

These people really need to grow up!

BTW rename it Chaityabhumi or zingalala, I'll be calling it dadar station only & I believe it works better that way for most of the crowd.

Locality name changes can cause a lot of confusion. Besides, Chaityabhumi doesn't sound as 'snappy' and easy to pronounce as Dadar.
