Will close Pak’s transit route to Central Asia if not allowed to trade with India: Ghani

Days before he arrives in New Delhi for an official visit, President Ashraf Ghani on Friday warned he would close Pakistan’s transit route to Central Asia if his country’s entrepreneurs were not allowed to trade with India via the Wagah border crossing.

The remarks reflected Kabul’s growing frustration with Islamabad after the virtual collapse of a Pakistan-backed process to engage with the Afghan Taliban. Ghani has been angered by Pakistan’s failure to deliver on a commitment to bring the militants to the negotiating table.

Ghani, who is scheduled to visit India on September 14, issued the warning during a meeting with Britain’s special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Owen Jenkins, according to a statement from the presidential palace.

The “tit-for-tat action” was prompted by Pakistan’s persistent refusal to let Afghan traders do business with India through Wagah, he said. Afghanistan is no longer a land-locked country as it has access to multiple transit trade routes, he added. The remark was an apparent reference to the recent pact between India, Pakistan and Iran to develop a transit corridor centred round Chabahar port.

Ghani complained to Owen that Pakistan usually closes transit routes during the fruit-growing season, leading to losses of millions of dollars. On the other hand, India has agreed to exempt Afghanistan from tariffs for fruit exports and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has allowed the airlifting of fruits, he added.

Besides the blocking of trade with India, Ghani raised Pakistan’s support for terror groups involved in destabilising his country. He told the British diplomat that support for terror was a violation of good neighbourliness and international norms. “This act of the neighbour was no longer acceptable to Afghans,” he added.

Ghani, who has repeatedly called on Pakistan to crack down on terror groups involved in strikes inside Afghanistan, said the continued attacks proved terrorists enjoyed “uninterrupted support from certain quarters”.

Hinting at a diplomatic push to counter the use of terror groups for destabilising Afghanistan, he said: “I want you to convey my message to Pakistan…Pakistan has always held out promises of supporting peace in Afghanistan, but taking its vows on face value is hard. And that’s why we want the neighbour to take practical steps.”

Ghani is expected to discuss ways to increase bilateral cooperation, especially in defence and security, when he visits India next week. Afghan Army chief Gen Quadam Shah Shahim raised Kabul’s wish list for military aid, including more helicopters and spares for Russian-origin equipment, during a low-key visit to New Delhi last month.

Last year, the Modi government set aside India’s long-standing policy of not providing military equipment to Afghanistan and supplied four Mi-25 gunship helicopters. India also trains about 800 Afghan military personnel every year.

Ghani’s visit to India comes ahead of the crucial Brussels Conference on Afghanistan to be co-hosted by the European Union on October 5. Last week, Afghanistan, India and the US also announced a new trilateral dialogue to be held on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York.

    meanwhile
India has trippled its force strength in Kashmir.
hehehe, RAW indeed played the masterstroke by igniting the protest and thus totally dissolving the chances of revoking AFSPA! Some people had started discussion on its removel previously due to JNU.

    Hahahahah.

Pakistan no longer relies on Afghan transit routes - why do you think we have all trade routes with Afghanistan currently blocked?

We have a better route filled by modern-facilities, open markets and not plagued by militants through China via Kashgar.

Ghani is doing what he's being told by his masters in Delhi. Let him block the transit route to CAR which currently for Pakistan is worth a couple of millions dollars only through Afghanistan. Everything we exports there, mainly fruits and textiles can be airlifted avoiding Afghanistan.
In return we block Torkham, Chamman and all other major crossings and suffocate Afghanistan which relies heavily on trade with Pakistan. Pak traders will suffer some losses but Afghanistan will be destroyed.
If a week blockade of Turkham results in chicken prices to shoot above Rs1.500/- per kg, just imagine what a permanent blockade will do to theit economy.

As the situation deteriorates, Pakistan won't have any reason to extend the 3 million refugees asylum and kick them back to where they belong. It will safe us billions and improve our internal security.

Alternative routes? If he thinks Iran will let him trade freely thru Chahbahar for the sake of India he's wrong. Iranis will milk him out like no other and they are less patient with Afghanis than we are.

Good luck Mr Ghani, I certainly hope you're not talking loose farts but actually will block the transit route.

    Look who is saying!

Millions of aid you got from USA , a country which runs on aid shouldn't be making such loose comments that Millions are nothing for you.

If you block them, they will hit you. And you are inviting wrath of Taliban! Engaging them will further lower your economy.

    Bheek already mangte ho ...

We are soon going to liberate Gulam kashmir occupied by pakistan and all of your land routs to middle east shall be cut off. We shall trade through kashmir via Afghanistan to middle east. within next 5 years, your economy is going to drop down to Bhutan level so do not worry about textile export etc.

Whaahahaha this is hilarious. India is six times bigger in population genius, of course we received more per capita. We were a US ally, entitled to the equivalent of Marshall Plan after joining CENTO/SEATO. What you got was pure 'bheek' as one of the the poorest and hungriest nations in the world.

Unlike Hindu-Satan which begged more than $66 billions from USaid till 2013 for free, we worked for it defending US' strategic interests in the region. Most of the so-called aid we received after the US invasion of Afghanistan is a repay or compensation for services we provide to the NATO.

What alternative routes does Ghani have?
Chahbahar is atleast a decade away from becoming a hub and both entry points into Afghanistan (south and west) are under Tali control. That leaves him with Turkmesnistan as the only alternative.

Now you have to work for economy too.

How will you feed your people if your economy going in shambles day by day? No one is trading with you (Don't start with CPEC). No industry back at home. Whatever you have, they are already closing them down.

And here you are doing dick measure contest with us.

Listen, I know Pakis have the brain the size of a pea. Figures since your most innovative and technologically advanced items are surgical instruments, lol but do you know what raping of sovereignty means?

It means a foreign country uses your air base and drones your own people and you are accusing us of letting others use our bases?

lol good one. Can come only from a Paki. Of course you guys are the greatest hypocrites on the face of the Earth. Show me one air base/port in India which is used by any other country. You guys on the other hand have sold yourselves to the highest bidders like shameless whores that you Pakis really are.

As regards ToT is concerned, every country which has an active scientific development program relies on it. Even China. Of course you guys don't need ToT. You can make water cars. It's a different matter that you can't produce decent doctors and build decent hospitals to take care of your own that they need to come to India and get treated even though they are treated worse than filth.
