Why was it that a rabid islamist like Zia ul-Haq never tried any games in Kashmir during his decade rule? How were his relations with India in general?

They are involved in Afghan war and are taking on USSR with the help of USA and Saudis. At that time they started Khalistan movement.

After the war they started the proxy war in Kashmir, the direct consequence of Afghan Jihad is Kashmir.

He was busy selling his soul to Americans, Saudis and Mullahs simultaneously to fight Soviets. Also getting his ass whopped in Siachen repeatedly and Op Brasstacks was pretty much the end of his Kashmir dream.

Zia's relevance in paki history would be because of pursuing of nuclear program started by Bhutto.

Imagine a non-nuclear pakiand.

1) Russians would not have stopped at Afghanistan.
2) india would not have stopped from taking back its territories.
3) with somewhat of a lesser probability a non-nuclear Pakistan would have remained secular like in pre-Zia times.

I think you are confused by the Porki folklore.

1) Russians had no interest in Pak whatsoever. This was the second part of "Islam khatre mein" to rally the mob of people dumber than the goats they were fucking."Pakistan khatre mein" works like a charm ,every single time.

All that warm water port bullshit has been cleared multiple times by their own generals. Their nuclear program started after Pokran-1 i.e. 1974, Soviets invaded Astan in 1978 and were sick and tired of it.

2) Had India wanted to take any territory back it would have done so anytime before Pakis had nuke i.e. mid to late eighties. What a nuclear Pak has achieved is the license to provoke and get away with it, nothing more nothing less.
