"Erected to commemorate the landing in India of their Imperial Majesties King George V and Queen Mary on the Second of December MCMXI"

That is what is inscribed on the front face. Why have we not demolished this and built a monument celebrating us kicking the Brits out?

Why is the Taj Mahal standing or the Red Fort or Victoria Memorial?

I presume because it is a part of our history!

So how many monuments of similar stature can you name that have been built to commemorate our freedom?

Taj Mahal is not a symbol of imperialism. It is a tomb. Neither was the Red fort.

Victoria Memorial, similar to the gateway of India was built to reinforce British Imperialism and symbolize it. We must destroy them and in their place build massive monuments that pays tribute to the men who gave their lives to remove the British from India.

Yusuf, please add content. Contempt is useless if you cannot make a point.

It is there because it looks good and goes well with the surrounding. Most of South Mumbai was developed by the british. Should we demolish all the buildings?

40000 worker of Taj Mahal had their hands cut-off. Do you think we should celebrate such a monument?

Go and ask the Hinduvta chaps.

They may not be sharing your views.

They would possibly like to destroy everything!

By your reckoning we should destroy India Gate since it commemorates those who died for the British in WWII.

Let us destroy the Rashtrapati Bhavan too. It commemorates the British regal splendour and by your reckoning be an insult to Free India!

Let us destroy the Govt and Parliamentary procedures since it is the legacy of the British rule.

Let us destroy North and South Block as it was the British seat of power!

By your reckoning, there are so many things that one must destroy.

Good idea, but do we have the money to build our own thereafter?

    Why destroy?

Wash it in Ganges water and all will be purified! ;)

Over centuries, the land this and that side of the Karakkoram has ruled each other several times. Before the Mughals came here, we went there several times. There is a certain shared culture that existed for centuries. The Mughal rule in India is just another chapter in the region that begins in todays Iran and ends in todays Thailand or further.

The British were different. They were alien conquerors. Their symbolism of conquest is not something we should be celebrating.

It's not contempt. It's an expression.

Well, we will have to destroy Lutyen's Delhi. Parliament, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Victoria memorial in Kolkata.

You know what is actually required. To destroy the archaic British laws that are still running the country and make new ones. That will at least help.

Read our process of gaining independence, and why we still maintain a membership in common wealth nation, Learn how our constitution has been enacted and why we dont hate English as a language and UK as a nation.

    Point made!

But I respect your views even if I don't agree.

I am by nature not a votary for destruction but of construction!

Indeed a pathetic state of affairs, dont you think? To use these structures as stop gap arrangements is one thing but to not build our own institutions of governance is an admission of very low self esteem. And institutions mean the people and the infrastructure.

Maybe the British rule should have continued. Maybe we need the white man to tell us how to live.

    Actually, I agree with trackwhack.

After tearing down the India Gate, we should build a large-scale replica of Tipu's Tiger to adorn the entrance to Mumbai.

It would be quite the spectacle for anyone entering Mumbai!

A monument celebrating India's relentless spirit!

India Gate, Gateway of India, Victoria Memorial ... all these were built after our freedom movement started. They were built to tell us who are true masters are.

How can your blood not boil when you see a monument like Gateway of India being preserved by our tax money, which was built to symbolize British colonialism. Have you all forgotten what the bastards did to our country?

We chucked them out and that matters. We can't tear down every single structure made by the Brits.

Some will demand the same be done to Mughal architecture.

The most lasting structure of the Brits in India is English, laws the Babudom and the corruption they bred in that.

The last two need to be destroyed and new ones be made.

A point to note....the structures mentioned....were built only during the "reign" of Britishers...however by "Indians" and not by Britishers....hence to bring down those structures is like nullifying the efforts and sacrifices, blood and sweat put by our ancestors to build those monuments....
