The dynasty fixation of the Indian Right — it comes in many shades between the liberal and the rabid, between the confused and the hypocritical — borders on the comical.

When the mighty Narendra Modi, the supposed future saviour of the nation, wants votes in Gujarat, he has to attack the Gandhis in New Delhi with all ferocity. When Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray wants to hand over the reins of the party to the gen-next in the family, he has to vehemently deny any parallels with the so-called first family. When required to introspect their own failure in assembly elections, the many shades of the Right would point to the failure of Rahul Gandhi to work miracles in Uttar Pradesh. This is dynasty worship by other means.

The convenient excuse for this is intra-party democracy. The Gandhis, as the argument from the Indian Right goes, have stifled democracy within the party. The presence of ‘the Family’ and its loyalists has denied more efficient Congressmen the opportunity to even aspire for higher positions in the party hierarchy. They want to enjoy power without any responsibility and do backseat driving in the government by arm-twisting it on policy matters. They are dictatorial to boot.

Curiously, it’s the same group which professes fawning admiration for Modi’s style of functioning, which many believe is ‘dictatorial’ and allows little room for dissent. This is also the section which is unequivocal about the need for a strong, authoritative leader – whatever that means — but would ignore the fact that the ideas of strong leadership and democracy within are incompatible. It is the group which would denounce vigorously the centricity of religion in the formation of Pakistan, yet would champion religion-based politics in India aggressively.

The Indian Right is elastic in its interpretation of democracy, secularism and liberalism. Probably it’s normal in a group of people who exist in such diverse social spaces and are share an abstract bonding through one holding theme: religion. Whatever the reality, the contradictions and the accompanying hypocrisy are galling. Let’s get back to its dynasty obsession of the Right to understand this.

The BJP, the political face of the Indian Right, loves to call itself a democratic party. Unlike the Congress, it claims, where decisions are taken by members of one family, it believes in collective leadership. Ability is respected in the party and despite many competent leaders at every level of the organisation, it remains a disciplined outfit. All this and many other noble qualities make it a party ‘with difference’. How far from reality this could be!

Check these out. The party is one of the fronts of the mother organisation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, an entity promoting cultural nationalism. Thus it is not a no strings attached independent existence for the party. The RSS often foists its choices upon the party, the choice is often someone with deep roots and connections within the organisation. If other senior leaders are not comfortable with lightweights being imposed upon them — Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari are examples – they don’t have too many options.

The party recently changed its constitution to allow a second term for the BJP president, an apparent move at the RSS’s behest to extend the tenure of Gadkari. If Sangh insists upon continuing with Gadkari despite all the allegations of financial irregularities against him, the party does not have a choice.

The freedom of party leaders to express free opinions is limited. They have to operate within the ideological framework of the mother organisation. The party’s most successful leader, Atal Behari Vajpayee, dared to be different and he was hated across the Sangh fraternity. LK Advani, the party’s tallest leader even now, was cut down to size promptly after he praised Jinnah during his Karachi trip. Narendra Modi is in a continuing battle with the RSS in Gujarat despite being the party’s showpiece leader. The tussle began after he sought to restrain the interference of the powerful members of the Sangh in governance matters.

For the party members going hammer and tongs at the ‘dynastic’ rule in the Congress, the dependence on the RSS is baffling indeed. The reasons of this are obvious. The BJP, which does not have too much independent penetration at the grassroots, needs the organisational reach of the Sangh for voter mobilisation. Thus it has to bend to the dictats of the latter for its political survival. The recent case of a poll-bound Modi rushing to the RSS headquarters to quell anger within the Sangh affiliates in Gujarat is a case in point.

The point here is not to be judgmental about the merits of the RSS or the BJP but to highlight the double standards of the India Right in the context of the so called ‘dynasty’. The ‘dynasty’ functions within the party and is responsible for the consequences of its actions. The RSS functions from outside the BJP’s political space and is not accountable for its electoral performance. The power without responsibility phrase applies here more than in the case of the Congress.

Ha. Guessed the author of the article correctly, Ms Akshaya Mishra.... :).

On topic, Nehru dynasty is the best thing to have happened to Bharat. Rahul ji, Priyanka ji and their next generation must carry on the great work done by Nehru chacha, Indira ji, Rajiv ji and Sonia ji. In fact, Bharat must follow the example of N Korea where the son of The Great Leader inherited the country from his father and reserve the post of Prime Minister only to direct descendants of Jawaharlal Nehru. As a corollary, each state can have a hereditary local satrap with a jagir of few 1000 acres of land and again rule the state. For eg Pawar dynasty in Maharashtra, Yadav dynasty in UP, Badals in Punjab, Karunanidhi family in TN etc. Jai Hind!

I think these lines pretty much sum up the tragedy.

The Congress dynasty is worse. Its a pity that we have to pick the lesser of the two evils.

Any remote control is not good. Be it family or organization. People vote for the people and party they represent and not remote control. This remote control business is totally undemocratic.

Rich Jamai Raja, poor Sasu-Ma and the ‘untouchables’

“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”
    - Samuel Adams

India has been reduced to a Scamrashtra. Laughably fatuous protestations to the contrary, by formulaic polemicists notwithstanding.

They call it a representative democracy. On paper, it appears to bear a striking resemblance to one; in spirit, nothing could be further from the truth. A theme I have touched upon often over the last few months.

For more on the mutant rotting versions of democracy that the powers that be, caught in an incestuous carnal embrace with crime and business, have transmogrified India into over the past 4 decades or so, click here and here.

Take Jamai-raja for instance. [Did I just hear Mister Chaar-kaam, who thinks that the meek, nay drivers should inherit the earth, heave a sigh of relief? Excellent - his complacency is our friend].

Cruising along on the autobahn of crony lootism, which is often Brian de palmed off as free-market capitalism by those whose ranks include PAN card non-holders, defaulters on IT returns, alleged murderers, rapists and swindlers. Click here for more on that.

And then, there are these half-penny, garden variety thugs who, when the cellophane of Oxford crinkles away under pressure-generated heat, resort to saying things like come to thisFbaad or thatFbaad, you third-grade nobody.

Ah, the cowardly infernal smugness extending till infinity….and then some.

Of course, remove the heat, and he morphs into a Cabinet Minister. Suave and charming, some say. Also a true do-gooder and an able philanthropist looking at the disabled with tear-evoking, heart-rending tenderness.

Even as some look askance at him.

Random thought: Note to Over-achieving non-poodle, non-tragically so – you are not only in office but you are also in power. So while you are parked there – democratically I believe – stop dabbling with words like ethics and instead show us some concrete action beyond a committee hither and a panel thither, on Electoral Reforms and on Real Estate Regulation. No? How about doing something on that white paper on black money? No? Whistleblower’s Bill, then? No? Dang! Show me your KRAs again please?!

I crack myself up with these random thoughts sometimes.

Back to Jamai-raja and the autobahn.

So he is cruising, wind in the Schwarzkopffed hair, cheeks fluttering comically as they often do at high speeds when one achieves Zen on a Harley, oversized shades [Versace?] lending a certain darkly tainted hubris to the apparition, as he flirts with vivid thoughts, some involving sucking on mangoes, sweet and soaked in the blood of dead farmers from places he has never been to, and places which, I suspect, won’t even dignify his presence.

No banana peels en route. Cruising like cruisers cruise. Thumbing his nose at the aam aadmis who inhabit his family-run banana republic.

Till one fine and glorious morning, Arvind wakes up, and decides to fire away a booming shot across the autobahn, possibly changing the rules of the game forever. Power often depends on the appearance of impregnability – Arvind methinks, has figured that one out.

Cruise forgotten. Replaced by the hangman’s noose on TV channels that pass off for the judiciary of late [on almost all matters except those that involve one of their own], as they all go to town with their ephemeral ithyphallic tumescence. Figuratively.

Crash boom bang. Bodies pile up thick and fast. Mostly cabinet ministers and paid government spokespersons who, in a moment of madness, drop all pretensions about who they constitutionally are, and who Jamai-raja constitutionally is. Like they say, those whom the Gods wish to destroy….

And all hell breaks loose. Political parties who were thus far participating in a big fat orgy [the hand does hold the lotus now, steady the bicycle then and stroke the elephant’s trunk often, is also the one that waves at the rising sun between the twin peaks…try any permutation of that and the point still holds..….you get the drift], sweating and moaning in delight as they raped and sodomized all four pillars of democracy, gnawing lustily till its innards were reduced to a certain empty fullness [like bloated dead bodies in a river?], its foundations shaken …..Well, they all suddenly go deliriously dopey batty nutty.

    Understandably so.

Coitus interruptus can wreak havoc on one’s mental equilibrium. Like I said moments ago, those whom the Gods wish to destroy, they make mad first.

Enough has been written about the rich jamai-raja and his maddening love for speed – 50 to 30,000 in 3 years sounds illegal to me — and a speeding ticket is in order. The howling din of those who have risen to his defence notwithstanding. Unsecured loans, quid pro quo, sweetheart deals, land-use change…..nothing new to add there.

Now let us look at the poor sasu-ma, shall we?

You don’t have to take my word for it, but as far as MPs and their declared wealth goes, sasu-maa is about as close to being a panhandling mendicant as an MP could get.
You decide for yourselves after going through the facts I am about to share with you.

    Here goes.

Break-up of Poor little sasu-ma’s wealth:

Source: MyNeta.info [figures are approximate, declared wealth = (assets – liabilities)]
    Just for a lark, and on a whim, let us line this up against Mayawati’s ` 112 crores, Renuka Chowdhury’s ` 55.6 crores [self + spouse], Supriya Sule’s ` 50.4 crores [self + spouse + dependents], Ambika Soni’s ` 17.6 crores [self + spouse], Dimple Yadav’s ` 8.6 crores, and Sushma Swaraj’s ` 7.4 crores [self + spouse + dependents].!
Poor sasu-ma and her puny fortune of `1.37 crores. Truly an ascetic mendicant.
All those who believe that this figure of ` 1.37 crore is an accurate reflection of reality, queue up to the right. The doubting Thomases to the left please.
So what do we have here? Let me see…..

Ah, as expected, right has been reduced to nothing. NOTHING.

If anyone considers RSS a choice between the devil and the deep sea, clearly he is deranged. A patriotic organization that it is and has been, it has done more for the country than KhangreA$$ has.

I think its unfortunate that we have only these two options for a large country like India.

And BJP is still struggling hard to be a pan-Indian National party.

    Gujarat Samachar : World's Leading Gujarati Newspaper, Gujarati News,Gujarat News,News from Ahmedabad,Baroda,Bhuj,Bhavnagar,Rajkot,Surat

It's in Gujarati but summary is- RSS has a lot of silent Svaymsevaks who've poured their lives behind only and only Samaj Seva. But some of its svayamsevaks who're in BJP are just tarnishing RSS' image. RSS is like a foreign body in eye for congress since independence. That's why there's systematical negativity is being spread against it.No news channel shows the ground level work done by RSS in all over country.Journalists actually know that. Some of corrupt leaders of BJP don't care about image of RSS and that's very unfortunate.Author also mentioned some of Svayamsevaks names in the article whom he knows personally and by giving their example he's giving the rough idea about Simplicity of RSS but on the other hand, BJP leaders are enjoying in 5 star hotels, luxuries cars." RSS means sleeping on ground on a simple sheet, while BJP means 5 star facility." "The Nationalist values don't go further ahead in BJP and that's very unfortunate."For congress,Gandhi's name is used to gain power and in BJP RSS' name is used for same."

Gujjus should read this article. Gujarat Samachar's supplementary pages are having very good authors who never do bias like main newspaper and this person "Sudarshan Upadhyay" is very good at doing criticism on Politics.
