Walmart is the front of the Chinese to sell their cheap and shoddy and even dangerous products (like toys with lead paint)!

Hope Walmart will relive India of unnecessary price rise and bring profits to the much required farmers.

The middle men make far too much money in the current system.

Walmart closing down in India is good news for BJP.
BJP had said they'll oppose FDI in Retail till their last breath.
Walmart has seen the writing on the wall.

I am all for FDI but not if it is a front for cheap Chinese shoddy goods and dangerous cosmetics and foodstuff!

BJP can howl for all I care!

It really depends on how a Retail Chain positions itself and what's its model. They usually have very stringent quality checks, so I am certain that you will get better quality for that particular price slab.

I think it was not doing well in Japan aswell.

From what I've read the big problem walmart had with India was the 30% rule. The India govt requires companies to source 30% of their stuff from locals, but this is too high for wall mart, Walmart lobbied hard to get this changed(I think was lowered to 30% from the mid 3os but not sure), and are also under investigation for some corruption issues.

So if you think they are going to help the local guys some decent profit in the process think again! I actually like my local fresh veggie and annachi shops for most of the day to day things.

Walmart will prevent annachi from making all the money and give back the profits to the farmers. Farm produces range upto Rs. 2 per kilo from farmers. When they reach us the end consumers they cost around 30 - 40Rs.

During the recent Onion crisis in Delhi, Wholesalers were paying 4-10 Rs/kg to the local farmers whilst the market rate was 90Rs/kg

Two things to keep in mind for the Indian members:

    - Walmart isn't known for and doesn't typically carry any food/produce. Of the 4 Walmarts in my city, only one recently opened a small produce section.
    - The assumption that the food/produce you will potentially buy at Walmart will be locally produced is a big stretch. Knowing Walmart, the food is more likely to be produced in Chinia/Latin American than it is In India.

Guys.....there are many cities in the US especially on the West Coast that have kicked Walmart out, or taken preventive measures to deny Walmart a chance to open a store in their neighborhood.

    1) First off Walmart's huge size and parking lot are an eyesore.
    2) Small Mom & Pop stores cannot compete with Walmart on prices.
    3) Walmart is a stingy company that pays it workers in the US the bare minimum and tries to limit benefits - there have been so many lawsuits against them.
    4) They are still mainly family owned by the stingy billionaire Sam Walton family and heirs. They stock their stores with tons of Chinese crap.

Many US don't want or need a Walmart anywhere near them.
Personally I would rather pay more than than have that nasty company build a store anywhere near where I live.
People have actually protested and stopped Walmart from opening their Mega stores.

the last time i checked walmart wasnt launching rockets so running a retail chain isnt rocket science :p the additional "benefits" in terms of reduced prices via cold storage tech and supply chain optimization can very well be done by a homegrown desi walmart. its very baffling how people forget that Sharad Pawar is the Agriculture and Food/Civil Supplies Minister and not a single demand for his resignation has come in... its a no-brainer that hes hand in glove with hoarders and middlemen and gets a cut from all this profiteering !

Who exactly said it was rocket science and what exactly has rocket science got to do with reduced cost.

Desi Walmart. let's see it didn't happen for the last 73 years. No use expecting it to pop up now.

Please ask Sharad Pawar yourself when you get a chance.

I worked at WAL*MART for a few months after I retired, assembling bicycles. The people who worked there were nice, but all levels of management were back-stabbing SOB's. The "associates" (us workers) knew what customers wanted, but management just wanted to beat down the average worker to save money for the corporation. I picture Sam Walton burning in his own little corner of Hell.

bub - if i had asked Sharad Pawar rest assured i wudve shared his quotable quotes on DFI. But i`m just a "mango man" raising his voice and pointing the finger at the "Pawar"ful and utterly venal/corrupt politicians who are screwing things up bigtime.
