Thiruvananthapuram, Sept. 24: The mission toMars is on track but for this former Isro scientist, it’s still an orbit too far.
S.NambiNarayanan, who was falsely branded aspy in the 1994 Isro espionage case, is still waiting for justice — not legal clearance, which he has already got, but punishment for those behind the controversy that he claims delayed space projects by years.
Narayanan, who has always said there was an international angle to the conspiracy behind the scandal, today recalled his conversation with Narendra Modi in September last year. “All I can say is that time won’t be like this always,Nambi Saab,” he said, recalling Modi’s words.
“I told him that both the Left and the Congress governments in Kerala were bent on saving those who wronged me. I wanted him to become PM so that the Centre could do something to get the investigation into the conspiracy going,”Narayanan said. A year on, he is still waiting.
Narayanan had been accused of leaking cryogenic engine technology, though India was then only in the process of acquiring the technology from Russia. “The local police never searched my office or home before or after arresting me on November 30, 1994. I suspect this was because if they had searched, they would have found nothing. But taking me into custody was the advice from their foreign masters,” he said.
He spent 50 days in jail before the CBI, which took over the case from the local police, said he had been falsely implicated. The Supreme Court acquittedNarayanan in 1998.
Had thespy controversy not happened, could India have achieved what it did today much earlier?
“I will not say this or that project, but the scandal delayed Isro projects by 10 to 15 years,”Narayanan said. “That was the aim. But those who did such damage to India and me personally are still sitting safe.”
A Kerala police officer who had investigated the case is now the state’s chief information commissioner.Narayanan had also lodged complaints against the then IB deputy director, R.B. Sreekumar, who later went on retire as a DGP from Gujarat, accusing him of torturing him in custody. Sreekumar had invited the BJP’s wrath by criticising Modi over the 2002 riots.
Earlier in the day, as Isro scientists readied to slow down the spacecraft to allow smooth orbit insertion,Narayanan broke a coconut at a city temple. His son-in-law S. Arunan is the project director for theMars Orbiter Mission.

No prizes for guessing it was our 'strategic ally' USA/CIA behind this.

Better late than never. Foreign agents must be plucked out. The fact that there is a strong government at the centre should also help.

Not just a couple of careers.... its repercussion was far beyond that.. at national level.

India's cryo project stalled and was almost abandoned because of the key scientists' departure. The Americans almost succeeded by delaying our cryo rocket until 2014 while we should have had that tech by 1998-99. Nambi Narayanan himself has said after his exoneration that even with the nuclear sanctions after India's blasts in 1998, we could have flown cryo by 2002. Therefore more than ten years' delay.

The worst part is one of the top newspapers that was in the forefront of the maligning campaign had proven CIA connections from the past. They broke the story and sustained the tempo until he was exonerated. Then suddenly dropped the topic altogether.

There should be an inquiry on the involvement of media in the whole episode if such seditious activities are to be rooted out.

On hindsight, it is clear that the whole episode was a grand conspiracy involving Americans, a media house and may be some political leaders ....

For those who are not familiar with the political consequences of the case, it was the immediate past defence minister A.K. Antony who succeeded then chief minister K. Karunakaran in Kerala as a fallout of the case.

I was thinking the same thing when i was reading the title, we could have been celebrating a manned mission but the machine which puts him there thanks to our own follies is yet to be tested.

Interesting mention about the case... And if the bankrupt Kerala govt says it does not have money to pay compensation, the court should order seizing of all the ministers' cars and auction to recover the money!!
Incidentally, the present chief minister Oommen Chandy, along with his mentor Antony, were political beneficiaries of the cooked up espionage case.

Once again the Indian mind injects drama into what should be the celebration of an exceptional accomplishment.

India would be supreme in the world were it not for the CIA, I have no doubt.

No we are a poor third world country. And it seems US has nothing better to do than screw up space and nuclear projects of poor countries.

Boo hoo. Narayanan case has nothing to do with MOM mission, AFAICT. Telegraph India story just trying to get people to read their site.

I see no evidence for your accusations.

Not tried to stop... indeed stopped it. And paid that infernal tippler Yeltsin nearly $450 million as compensation. But Russian did in the end clandestinely help us out with the cryo development.

You are indeed right. Narayan case has no direct link to MOM.

It was about the cryo development. But the hidden connection is that if the cryo development did not take as long as it eventually took, India could have used a GSLV for both Chandrayaan-1 and MOM, instead of the PSLV-XL.

It is DFIndians who wish to make India always the victim, so your characterization of Americans is an evasion.

The other half of equation is big strong Russia must save helpless India.

Isn't it embarrassing to Indians who do have pride in their country?

Your evidence is another thread on DFI? You should try harder. And here is a post in that thread:

Inconclusive at best, conspiracy theory at worst.

This guy is a piece of work, and evidently couldn't get any traction with his ranting.

Was thinking Usa could have helped and supported in development of cryogenic engine ... Why Russia ... Perhaps they the Americans wanted ... Perhaps too expensive terms and did not want Russia to take advantage ... On the other side perhaps usa thought that Russia would loose significance after 1990s and India would eventually come around to usa.

The 11 and 13 May are dates that also Slapped India and usa relationship into reality. Now private companies are doing disruptive developments in space and also the defence and economic affairs and more connection with people know how and skills.
