When should India host the Olympics?

Since they first started, the Olympics have been used by countries to project their rising influence in the world scene. Most recently, China used the Olympics to showcase their progress live to billions of viewers from around the world. The impact that the Olympics can have on global public perception is huge.

If India wants to become a great power, it too will need to showcase its progress to the world. But after the drama of CWG, are we ready to do this? If not, when will we be ready? Do the potential benefits of such a project justify the exorbitant costs?

I would say we should never host olympic . We will always have people like Kalmadi who will be ready to loot that money . we should find better use of that money to uplift life of poors or improve infrastructure. country as large as India will always have need of more and more money to put to better use than Olympic or CWG .

No need to be cynical. When we are at 5 trillion dollars, all the cynics will say yes we need to host. Its a prestige thing, and I hope it remains till we host when india too will get a chance to showcase itself to the world. India at 5 trillion will not be the same as what it is today.....

Put the required 500 Billion USDs into basic public infrastructure first. If still your accounts allow, consider it.

when we become 5 trillion dollar economy we will still have poors and in that case we will have ghotalas worth billions compared to millions we had for CWG . It will just raise the bars for corruption. If we are able to find a transparent way to conduct games we should be looking for such events but given kind of lax attitude we Indians have for such events it will only bring bad publicity and loss of money .

Even if we were to manage to garner the right to host the Olympics,it would be mightily embarrassing if we hadn't by then won a handful of Olympic gold medallions.India shouldn't bother bidding for one until we have managed to cross the double digit figure in the Olympic gold medal bracket,otherwise it will be grand party of the sporting super powers at our expense.

India should host Olympics as soon as possible. Yes it is very costly and will cost more in the future. But it will tremendously improve Indian's infrastructure for many cities and let world know India better.

As a rising giant, India needs to develop in every field. You can't have a strong economy but your people are physically weak. You can't have a shining IT industry but a lot of your places are inaccessible. Olympics will not only bring tourists around world to visit India, but also promote Olympics spirits among Indian people that will push the country to become "faster, higher, and stronger" as Olympics slogan says.

In that regard, Olympics will well serve India's interest. It's not an embarrassment, it's an opportunity.

India should host Olympics as soon as possible. Yes it is very costly and will cost more in the future. But it will tremendously improve Indian's infrastructure for many cities and let world know India better.

I agree on rest points but Olympics preparation in India will involve massive expenditure on infrastructure of only few of the cities. At the same time, dozens of many tier-II, tier-III cities & countless villages lack basic infrastructure for its ordinary citizens.

Priority should be given to establish this basic infrastructure first & then expenditure for Olympics to be hosted in 1-2 sites. Otherwise, it won't justify ordinary Indian taxpayer's money. Transparent Establishment shouldn't be boasting with highly expensive events while its common citizens are suffering due to lack of basic facilities.

Some $1.5 trillion is to be invested in our infrastructure over the next few years. If done properly, India can have a very good infrastructure network by 2020.

We'll have to wait and see how it pans out. I haven't voted on the poll yet but I think India should host in 2028 or 2032.
