If we can invite the heads of states of all the Arab countries, why can we not invite Israel? But yeah, there will be quite a few Muslim votes that are lost in the process.

Since 1950, India has been hosting head of state or government of another country as the state guest of honor for Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi. During 1950-1954, Republic Day celebrations were organized at different venues (like Irwin Stadium, Kingsway, Red Fort and Ramlila Grounds). It was only starting 1955 when the parade in its present form was organized at Rajpath. The guest country is chosen after a deliberation of strategic, economic and political interests. During 1950s-1970s, a number of NAM and Eastern Bloc countries were hosted by India. In the post-Cold War era, India has also invited several Western leaders on a state visit during the Republic Day. It is notable that before India fought wars with China and Pakistan, leaders from these countries were invited as state guests for the Republic Day celebrations. Interestingly, Pakistan Food and Agriculture Minister was the second state guest from that country for Republic Day in 1965, a few days after which the two countries went to a war. Countries which have been invited multiple times include India's neighbors (Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Mauritius), defense allies (Russia/USSR, France and Britain), trade partners (Brazil) and NAM allies (Nigeria, Indonesia and erstwhile Yugoslavia). France has the distinction of being the guest of honor for the maximum (four) number of times followed by three visits each from Bhutan, Mauritius and USSR/Russia. It is also worth noting that no President of the United States has been a state guest of honor.

India should think of inviting Heads of Govt from Taiwan, Israel, and other countries that require recognition that they also exist as Nations and are as important as any other.

What more criteria do you need than a gracious face to grace a gracious occasion ?

Criteria - diplomacy, with the idea of strengthening relations.

But then pakistanis have been back stabbers, always!

The same year, 2003, the NDA government hosted the Israeli PM. The best balancing act in diplomacy.

I want to see PM pay a visit to Israel if and when he does so to Iran.

Maybe Obama will be invited in his second term. Surely by then the USA will have been globally humiliated sufficiently to satisfy all Indians.
(Not sure to add a smiley there.)

By and large Indians admire the progressive and independent nature of Americans. It is the left leaning Indians who would like to see Americans being humiliated rest of us have lot to learn from Americans when it comes to being compassionate and donor to the nation as well as international body's.
I remember when as a young boy growing up during the Nehru - Kennedy era in respective country's of ours, I learned the first thing about USA's help through the PL 480 programme and second was the offer to help India during the China's adventure in 1962.

Its amazing why we have not invited an Israeli PM yet. Comgress party never had the balls to do anything controversial, i think we must invite USA and Israel leaders once but the timeing now is bad because of Iran crisis.
