High-speed patrol boats for Vietnam Border Guard
L&T has been allocated a major order from the Vietnam Border Guard for the design and construction of high-speed patrol boats in India, as well as the transfer of design and technology along with equipment supply and material kits for construction of follow-on vessels at Vietnam Shipyard.

The high-speed patrol boats are purpose-built for controlling and protecting sea security and sovereignty, detecting illegal activities such as smuggling, and undertaking search-and-rescue missions.

Constructed from aluminium alloy, the vessels will be equipped with state-of-the-art navigation and surveillance equipment and self-defence capabilities on board.

Till my understanding this is about supporting offshore exploration, production and subsea construction activities . Are vessels like these convertible for defence purpose ?

Hmmm...according to the website:

"The contract for the construction of the vessel was awarded in August 2007 by Singapore-based Greatship Global Offshore Services which is an incorporated subsidiary of Greatship (India) Limited (GIL). GIL is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Great Eastern Shipping Company.

The vessel was built and delivered by Keppel Singmarine in December 2009. It has been bareboat chartered to GC Rieber Shipping and is deployed in Australia by its partner company Bluestone Offshore."

It looks like the ship was built in and by Singapore for India - not the other way round?

no this kind of ships as you pointed out are used in the Oil and Gas sector IV Support of drilling and extraction operations and these type of ships have no standing in defence

Sri Lanka received the first patrol ship of Indian construction

On August 2, 2017, Colombo hosted the ceremony of entering into the Navy of Sri Lanka a large patrol ship P 623 Sayurala, the head Indian construction of the Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel (AOPV) project. The ceremony was attended by the President of Sri Lanka Maytripal Sirisen. Sayurala (Sinhalese name means "Sea waves") became the largest combat unit of the Sri Lanka fleet.

The construction of two AOPV patrol ships for the Sri Lanka Navy is being carried out under the India-Lanka intergovernmental agreement at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in Goa. The shipyard GSL received the corresponding contract on February 17, 2014. The cost of one ship is $ 74 million. Sayurala's main ship was laid in Goa on September 10, 2014 and launched on June 10, 2016. The delivery was made 86 days before the contract period - on July 22, 2017 in Goa the ship was transferred to the Sri Lankan side and on July 28 arrived in Colombo. At the same time, the ship does not have armament, which will be mounted already by the Sri Lankan side.

The construction for Sri Lanka of the second patrol ship of the same type P 624 (not yet announced) has been conducted on the GSL since 2015, The ship was launched on December 15, 2016. The delivery is expected in the summer of 2018.

The AOPV project is a modified version of the GSL under contract 2012 for its own project for the Coast Guard of India, six large patrol ships such as Samarath. The AOPV patrol vessel has a total displacement of 2350 tons, a length of 105.7 meters and a width of 13.6 meters. The crew of 118 people (including 18 officers). The ship has a two-shaft diesel power plant, a full speed of 26 knots, a cruising range of 4,500 miles with an economic course of 14 knots. There is a hangar for the permanent basing of one medium or two light helicopters.

The contract for the construction of ships such as AOPV (Sayurala) became the largest export military contract in the history of Indian military shipbuilding. Let's remind, That before that the largest military ship built in India for export was the patrol ship Barracuda, built for the coast guard of Mauritius by the Indian state shipyard Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata under the MOPV project (full displacement of 1350 tons, length 74 m) And handed over at the end of 2014.

That's a shame. We could have easily supplied CRN-91 and/or Bofors L70 based armament.

I suspect that the reason was to be politically correct, where we are not seen selling kinetic arms to SL - as these could potentially be used on TN fishermen.

PS: See the quality of the article - clear, comprehensive and concise - why cant our own media produce a report like that?

Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessel ‘Sayurala’ commissioned

This is SL's largest warship and going to be pride of SL's peoples for decades. Imagine the goodwill she will create for India there. When and where SLN deploys overseas, it will create sales leads for us.

Mauritius Coast Guard has commissioned its CGS Valiant patrol vessel at Port Louis on 16 August 2017.

The ship, built by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), is the second Sarojini Naidu-class Water Jet Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) supplied by India to Mauritius.

The Indian Navy said in a statement that it oversaw the construction of the ship and was involved in its trials, acceptance, and timely delivery. Rear Admiral Surendra Ahuja, Assistant Controller Warship Production and Acquisition represented the Indian Navy at the commissioning ceremony.

CGS Valiant is primarily designed for Coastal Patrolling, Anti-piracy, Anti-smuggling, Anti-drug Surveillance, Anti-poaching Operations, and Search and Rescue Operations. The Sarojini class of watercraft are seagoing, high speed, armed surveillance platform, capable of shallow water operations.

The vessel is powered by three 2,720 kW MTU diesel engines, driving independent Kamewa water-jets and are designed for good maneuverability and are capable of operating in up to Sea State 4 and can withstand Sea State 6. The vessel has an operational range of 1,500 nm and is capable of achieving a high speed of 37 knots. :hail:

The vessel is fitted with 30 mm CRN-91 Naval Gun at forward and two 12.7 mm heavy machine guns (HMG) and 7.62 mm medium machine guns (MMG), each installed on both sides of the board.

They are fitted with the latest satellite communication and navigation systems including differential global positioning system (DGPS), electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS) and global maritime distress and safety system (GMDSS).

They have air-conditioned accommodation for a crew of 35 and have an endurance of 7 days. The vessels in this series are eco-friendly, featuring an onboard sewage treatment plant and the gases used for air-conditioning are ozone layer friendly.

During the trials, the vessel achieved 37.5 knots and all other design parameters.

http://www.janes.com/article/70152/mauritius-national-coast-guard-gets-new-patrol-vessel

The Mauritius National Coast Guard (NCG) received its second fast patrol vessel (FPV) on 30 April, the vessel's manufacturer, India's state-owned Goa Shipyards Limited (GSL) announced.

CGS Valiant is the second of two FPVs ordered by Mauritius from GSL, with CGS Victory having been handed over in September 2016. The India Import-Export Bank helped fund the USD41 million order.

The Mauritius Police Force said that the ship is expected to reach Mauritius in June following its maiden voyage.

GSL said Valiant 's keel was laid on 22 May 2015 and the FPV was launched on 2 February 2017, with delivery taking place four months ahead of the original contractual schedule.

The vessel is based on GSL's 50 m FPV design that is also in service with the Indian Coast Guard. It is armed with a 30 mm CRN-91 main gun as well as 12.7 mm and 7.62 mm machine guns. The ship has a complement of 35 kt and an endurance of seven days. Valiant has three MTU-F 16V4000 M90 diesel engines that power three KAMEWA Type-71SII waterjets. GSL said that the vessel exceeds the 35 kt maximum speed specified in the contract by 2.3 kt.

Valiant is designed primarily for coastal patrolling and related law enforcement operations, such as counter piracy, drug interdiction, and search and rescue. It will join a fleet of other Indian-made vessels in service with the NCG.

Mauritius and India have a long-standing defence co-operation, with India providing training assistance to Mauritius Police Force, conducting joint patrols with NCG vessels, and facilitating the modernisation of the police and coastguard with loans for the purchase of Indian-made equipment.

The CGS Valiant is not identical to ICGS Sarojini class FPVs.

The Mast is the most prominent difference.

The bow has a fairing, possibly for stealth. The bridge also has a different design.
