    My guess is the French wanted to be in charge.

    The French don't care about their reputation..

    french nowadays seems to be trying to take control of situations like as in syria, chad, libya etc..........what's happening with the french ?

    Well, the UK without the backing of the US is a total zero!

    So, the French really have no competition except from Germany.

    Let me hope now!!!

    The British will engineer a rift between the French and Germans. They will let the Germans to do the job. The French will go begging across the channel. The Germans will be preparing to cross the channel and the Brits will go begging across the Atlantic!!!

    Unfortunately, reading the entire article at that link requires registration, but clearly the reporting is exactly opposite to that of earlier article cited.
