After 1857, the British banned Arabic and Persian in schools. Predictably, Subcontinental Muslim elite were horrified at this development. Cries of "Islam Khatrey mein hai" echoed through the streets, the institutions of Aligarh & Deoband were born.

Both these schools wanted to rejuvenate Islam but took different paths.

Deoband wanted to return to the roots and believed that good 'ol pure 7th Century Islam is the solution for Muslims who have deviated from the Quran. Aligarh OTOH attempted to fuse Islam with Western thought and modernize it.

The folks at Aligarh weren't liberals though, they firmly believed in the supremacy of Islam. Project 'Pakistan', an attempt to incorporate the Westphalian concept of nation state into Islam is a product of Aligarh

PS: Ambedkar called 1857 an Islamic jihad. When people say that British defeated Muslims/Mughals, they're referring to this post 1857 education policy

The person from whom Abdul Wahab was influenced was an Indian Muslim from Sindh.

The source of Islamism in the World in the Last 300 Years is from India.

I think Many of the Fellow members over here miss the Shia-Sunni Split aspect. This was the first exposure of the two biggest inter-islamic rivals in front of a much superior western power ie - The British Empire. The Sunni Commanders Subhedars, Jagirdars, and Sultans of Madhya Pradesh ie Bhopal, were not on same page as the Shia Mirza, Nawabs of Awad and Nizam of Hyderabad (who infact supported the British remember). In the battle of Buxar British used this split Sunni warriors from Bihar and Bengal Precidency for their own use to defeat Nawab shah allam. And most important Hindu subjects and Citizens never co-operated or united with their Muslim rulers. Why? B cause As They say EK LOOTERA AYA THA TO DUSRE USEE KO LOOTNE AYE. :cb: .Muslims never connected nor united and had always Persian Turkish Afgani Uzbeki influence making Hindu KAFIRS in their own land and hence were not united. What change does it matter to Hindus make if a Western Christian Superpower from the 7 seas invade an area which was already been invaded by central asian muslim conquers some 300-500 years ago??????. The British used whatever advantage their opponents presented to them and Crushed the 1857 "rebellion"......................

Maybe the educated...but I have seem amazing ignorance among the common Muslim about the Maratha confederacy..most think that Mughal empire was till 1857 in all its glory under B.S. Zafar who was defeated by the British.

And on topic - the Arabs are still tribals..they just use religion to fight their old tribal wars probably just like their Prophet..but they are NOT as religious as south asians. South Asian muslims are THE most religiously motivated.

I think that is the view that has been propagated by William Dalrypimple.
