Vietnam has asked China to put an immediate end to seismic research in the vicinity of Tri Ton island in the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago, calling the research a serious violation of Vietnam's sovereignty.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nguyen Phuong Nga voiced Vietnam's protest at a regular press briefing in Hanoi on August 5.

Nga said since late May 2010 China has used the ship M/V Western Spirit and others to conduct seismic research in the area of Tri Ton island and oil blocs 141, 142 and 143 on Vietnam's continental shelf, about 90-116 nautical miles off Ly Son island, Quang Ngai province.

The actions seriously violate Vietnam's indisputable sovereignty over the Hoang Sa archipelago and its sovereign rights to the continental shelf and the exclusive economic zone extending out 200 nautical miles from the baseline under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, Nga said.

She added that China's actions run contrary to the Declaration of the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea and the common consensus on maintaining peace and stability, and not complicating the situation in the East Sea, reached by the two countries' top leaders.

Nga said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has contacted various Chinese agencies many times to make clear Vietnam's stance on this issue, but that China has continuously carried out such activities.

Vietnam demands that China put an immediate end to all such activities that violate Vietnam's sovereignty and its sovereign rights in the East Sea, helping to maintain peace and stability in the East Sea, and develop the Vietnam-China relations in a stable and healthy manner, said Nga.
