the recent incident in the south china sea has united china's biggest rivals into a sort of loose alliance challenging its notorious intentions in the vicinity of the sea lanes.

add to that indonesia , taiwan who also would not mind to have a pound of their bitter rivals. for he first time the chinese plans seems to have backfired and almost all of its neighbours are now up against them , china cannot afford to get this alliance get strong or risk an armed conflict in a larger scale.

Chinese diplomacy will be tested , what do you feel china should be doing

AV I would say that plan has backfired only when Vietnam , Indonesia or Philippines attack chinese patroling boats in their maritime territory or arrest them for intruding. Till then its just going the way china wants it to go . Hope they al unite and start replying to chinese aggression in same manner.

Exaggerated!

China is not as isolated as imagined.

Indonesia is not much relevant in the dispute despite a minor overlapping claim over S. China Sea. China and Indonesia even launched their first joint military training , code-named "Sharp Knife 2011," in Bandung, Indonesia on June 06, 2011. China sent 69 representatives to the event. Besides, China has intensified her investment in Indo and become a top investor and trading partner there.
2011-06-04 (China Military News) -- China delivered two more MA-60 aircraft to Indonesia Friday, completing a 15-aircraft deal clinched with Merpati Nusantara Airlines five years ago, sources with the manufacturer in Xi'an said Saturday.

The last two aircraft in the deal flew from Yanliang Airport in Xi'an to Indonesia's Medan Airport on Friday.

The deal was signed between Xi'an Aircraft Industry (Group) Company and Merpati Nusantara Airlines in June 2006 and the first two aircraft were delivered in August 2007.

Last month, special safety audit carried out by Indonesian transport ministry indicated the MA-60 planes were proper to flight, allowing the further purchase of the plane by Merpati Nusantara Airlines.

The audit was carried out following the crash of a MA-60 plane at Kaimana gulf in West Papua of Indonesia on May 7, killing all 25 people on board.

Herry Bhakti S. Gumay, director general for air transport at the Transport Ministry, also said after investigation the MA-60 planes were "good and airworthy".

MA-60 is designed for short and medium-range commuter services. Due to its low operational and maintenance costs, MA-60 has sold well in Africa and Southeast Asia since 2005.

Japan and Korea? That's East Sea Theatre. Never imagine the 2 guys would join hands against China. They're against one another over a tiny island. And S.K. counts on China as No.1 market as well as a mediator with N.K.

I'd guess China would soften stance with others like Filipino. Most recently China invites President Aquino to visit China despite a hue and cry. Then China would single out VN as the top rival at S. Sea for a good fight to scare off VN's partners like Shell or BP, and to pave the way for intense oil exploring activities. There'd little comfort from the US who'd rather stand aside except offering lip service or a joint manoeuver at most.

China is always surrounded by plenty rivals throughout history. As a country we are living in one of the worst geopolitical area in the world. It requires extreme courage, tactics and wisdom to maintain regional stability while protecting China's best interest.

Never in history has smaller nations came together to face off against a much larger nation. IMO there is no way Indonesia, Vietnam and Philippines would come together on their own. Some of these countries may join an anti-China alliance if its lead by US (or India in the future), but on their own, they are more likely to give in to China than take them head on.

After the very embarrassing humiliations of the current Philippine administration at the hands of the Chinese, despite very overt overtures and scandalous concessions on important diplomatic issues, I think the Philippines has been seared by its ill-conceived Chinese policy shift. The Filipinos just got a bad case of reality check - the Chinese cannot be trusted.

All of this nation have to stand at least 80% on their feet without much support from US..

Japan and SK have to increase their defense budgets and have a powerful army navy and Air-force, Presently most of this nation are depending on US for their protection..

Vietnam is a exception..

Why would they do that? Why take away much needed money from other non-military programs when their MDTs with the US is guaranteed? In fact even now that they're not dreaming of matching US' defense spending, or India's, their respective (especially the SK) defense industries are fast becoming the envy of the World.

No one`s saying matching someone defense expenditure..

Their is nothing Guaranteed..

Philippines does have a mutual defense treaty with the US, and it applies to all lands where Philippine's de-facto administration is in effect today even if claimed by China, based on the prior US interpretation of a similar question with Japan, where Hillary Clinton confirmed that the US is required to intervene if China seized Diaoyutai.

It does not apply to land claimed by Philippines but controlled by China.

On the other hand, there are Filipino law makers who want to annul this treaty immediately because the US doesn't support all of Filipino claims.

The Philippines has not been a very reliable ally lately as it has been courting the PRC in a fashion that would make the Pakis insecure. Besides, the generals in that country are unreliable. Too much assurance from the US may give then crazy ideas of directly harassing PLAs assets in Spratlys triggering a real shooting war in the area. Then the US would be put in a very compromising situation wherein it may have to chose between aiding an old ally or losing credibility to new allies in the region.

Japan and SK on the other hand are different matters. The geostrategic importance and loyalties of these countries to the US is beyond question.

The mission of the United States Navy is to maintain, train and equip combat-ready Naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression and maintaining freedom of the seas.

I have to agree here,

Korean hate Japan and China also Taiwan :)
Japan hate Korean and china but neutral against Taiwan :)
Taiwan hate Korea and China but loves Japan :)

But an alliance against a common enemy is already on the way, Just look at the expansion of Asian navies Specially SK and Japan..
The problem here is the 000 adding every year behind China Defense Budget ( SK Foreign minster in 2005 )

ROC claimed all islands in South China Sea, as well as their surrounding waters, sea beds and subsoil, are all an inherent part of the territory of the Republic of China:
May 25, 2011
On May 19 this year, the government of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam claimed the Shisha Islands (Paracel Islands) and the Nansha Islands (Spratly Islands), which belong to the Republic of China (Taiwan), to be an integral part of Vietnamese territory. Then, on May 23, the presidential spokesperson of the Republic of the Philippines stated that Reed Bank, which is part of the Nansha Islands, is in Western Palawan and therefore an integral part of the territory of the Philippines. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of China (Taiwan) reiterates its position as follows:

1.Reed Bank is part of the Nansha Islands. Whether looked at from the perspective of history, geography or international law, the Nansha Islands(Spratly Islands), the Shisha Islands, the Chungsha Islands (Macclesfield Islands) and the Tungsha Islands (Pratas Islands), as well as their surrounding waters, sea beds and subsoil, are all an inherent part of the territory of the Republic of China (Taiwan). These archipelagoes therefore fall under the sovereignty of the Republic of China (Taiwan), and the government reasserts that it enjoys all rights over the islands and their surrounding waters, and that it does not accept any claim to sovereignty over, or occupation of, these areas by other countries.

AFP Has No Fighter Planes To Protect Philippine Airspace — Oban

By Ben Cal, PNA and Southern California News Agency / Asian

It's a shocking reality, but since 2005 the Philippines has no jet fighters to intercept incoming hostile aircraft from entering into the country's airspace.

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff Gen. Eduardo SL Oban Jr., in an exclusive interview with the Philippines News Agency (PNA), confirmed the predicament of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) which has no supersonic jet fighter interceptors since the F5 jets were phased out six years ago because they were obsolete.

"Our pilots have no more fighter jets to scramble unlike before," Oban, himself a jet pilot, said, referring to the days of old when the Air Force had squadrons of jet fighters in its arsenal.

"Scramble" is a termed used by fighter pilots to scamper to their planes once a siren is sounded to alert them that hostile aircraft are about to intrude into the country's airspace.

Oban admitted that the PAF at present has no capability to intercept hostile planes that may intrude into Philippine skies.
