Strange that in India being vegetarian is considered backward while in the West vegetarianism is considered elite and something that the liberal lefties espouse!

    Good.

I shall tell the airlines and hotels to earmark me for 'Jain' meals, whatever that means!

Reminds me of the old joke about married men living longer than single men.

"They don't really live longer; it just seems that way."

    This study is flawed.

Vegetarians on an average live longer in western countries because they embrace the whole healthy lifestyle. They are more likely to eat healthy, take supplements, exercise, smoke and drink less. (I can find a relevant study if anyone needs).

In India people are vegetarian due to societal or religious reasons and they don't embrace a healthy lifestyle as a whole.

Japan is one of the healthiest countries, they are not vegetarians.

If this is an observational study then I wont take it seriously. If there is any scientific evidence then its something to think about.

Agree. What I have a problem is when people say it is `progressive` to eat meat.

Whatever one eats, at the end it boils down to healthy balanced lifestyle & good nutrition. These kind of studies are more like propagandist in nature.

I think it has more to do with lifestyle than food.
Then it also depends on the food of the area. Meaning, the veg or non-veg of a partuclar area will not be the same as the other.
For example, ancient cow domesticators like the Indians and Europeans don't have lot of lactose intolerance issues with their cows.
But the US, Africa etc have high lactose intolerance.

    Regards,
    Virendra

Atleast a third or more of North Indian population is lactose intolerant, and this number increases from north to south, it is estimated that over half of South Indians are lactose intolerant.

Americans have largely european ancestry, and Europeans are the least lactose intolerant group.

The Japanese have some of the longest lifespans in the world and most of them are not vegetarians at all.

Diet and overall lifestyle is a better determinant of longevity.
