Its a wire guided torpedo.

Some how the Russians seem to be able to pronounce such names as Vikramaditya with ease, compared to English who deliberately screw it up.

The Russians have a pretty complicated language themselves. Try this, "Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik."

Vizag is increasingly getting important regarding navy.

its better than Mumbai... I think the IN is slowing shifting its importance from Mumbai to Vizag and the east.... much better for the navy as Vizag is a better port and not so congested and Bay of Bengal is more secure for testing rather than the Arabian sea where every countries navy has boats patrolling!

Wonder what happened to this program.... NSTL is muted, Navy was about to procure Black Shark Torpedos for Warships, while couple of year back their were news like Indian Torpedo near ready. maybe it have failed to live up to expectation.

as given of this Heavy Torpedo was never reaching its range... some friends from DRDO said it was becoming too slow before reaching its target..

Hmm.. point to be noted.

i think Navy ordered 24 varu.,. Its first tranche once they satisfied. They will order more.
One cannot evaluate the both scorp and new torps-it will complicate the work. Hence proven torps are for scrop.
Note@ missles and torps are diff. If torp is at high speed- it will create noise and alert the enemy. Hence comprised is needed@ speed=noise !

Torpedo are also used on destroyer and frigates like Delhi and Shivalika class..

Where as they are also used on Submarines..

Little is known about either programme, mostly because that's the way the government has wanted it. Scant bits of literature (sometimes inadvertent) suggests that technologies involves in both or either of the torpedo programmes include sea water actuated / silver zinc propulsion packages, contra-rotating motor and propellers, proximity sensors, HE warheads, composite material construction, stepless speed control, fibre optic guidance, floating recorder and transmitter (FRAT), noise cancellation techniques and low noise FRP propellers.

Btw, This Monster is for Indeed Destroyers Not for Submarines...

The NSTL has developed both light-water torpedoes (LWTs), named TAL, and heavy-weight torpedoes (HWTs), named Takshak and Varunastra. Takshak has two versions, a submarine-launched variant with wire guidance and a ship-launched one with autonomous guidance. Varunastra is an advanced version of the ship-launched HWT. Under development is a torpedo called Shakti with thermal propulsion, which can generate 500 kilowatt of power and rev up the engine within a second. "Thermal propulsion is a challenging technology," said Rangarajan. "It is a totally indigenous effort. We have already consolidated several technologies in its development. Only the United States, the United Kingdom and Russia had torpedoes with thermal propulsion when we took up the challenge."

I think Varunastra was somewhere reported to be some 30 km

Its slightly better than MK24 tiger fish ( 35knots, 28kms ), With 40knots, 30kms and little lighter than tiger fish..
