Varanasi: At least 25 people have been injured in a blast on the ghats of Varanasi. Police say at least 4 people - including a foreigner - suffered serious injuries. The police has not confirmed reports of people dying in the incident.

Home Ministry sources have told NDTV that it was a low-intensity blast injuring about 7 people in. A railing broke during the stampede that followed, injuring another 15-20 people.

PTI reports an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) has been recovered from a dustbin at the blast site.

The explosion took place at Sheetla Ghat where the daily aarti or prayers are offered. The explosion reportedly took place just as the aarti finished.

Eyewitness reports suggest the blast took place around 6:25 pm. There were at least 5000 people at the ghats to watch the aarti, which begins at 5:40 pm everyday.

Reports suggest a blast radius of 150 metres, and a major tragedy was averted because the blast occurred some distance away from where the aarti was taking place.

The police has been put on high-alert in all towns and cities of Uttar Pradesh. Top police officials met in the state capital, Lucknow. Security in Delhi, Mumbai , Hyderabad and Bangalore has also been stepped up after the blasts. (Read: Security in Delhi stepped up)

Briefing the media, Additional Director General of Police Brij Lal said the top police officials and the bomb disposal squad are at the spot. The police say its too early to confirm who or what caused the blast. Prima facie evidence suggests that the explosives were kept on the steps of the ghat.

Varanasi blast: IM claims hand; no specific alerts

Terror outfit Indian Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for the blast that occurred at a Varanasi ghat on Tuesday evening, in which 20 people have been reportedly injured.

Sources in the Intelligence Bureau say that they cannot confirm this immediately, but are studying the claim made by the IM.

"The nature of the blast and the place chosen all lead us to believe that it was an IM operation," an IB source said.

Apart from Pune in Maharashtra, the IM has its strongest base in Uttar Pradesh and is considered to be the birthplace of the outfit.

"The IM has been desperate for attention off late after a phase of lull caused by intense counter-terror operations. There has been a big fall in the recruitment of IM operatives following a massive crack down in the past. These terror groups were looking to carry out attacks using emotive issues, so that they can garner support for their group which was down until now," the source said.

    No specific alerts

With regard to Uttar Pradesh there were no specific alerts of a terror strike.

There were alerts sent out by the IB and Home Ministry to the UP police at the time of the Ayodhya verdict and also during the anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition.

Apart from that there was no specific instance of an attack at Varanasi. The alerts that were sent out all suggested either communal tension and also a possible IM operation in Uttar Pradesh.

The security agencies felt that the IM would be looking to target the state to make a statement.

Thank God there are no fatalities. Some rats in the country need to be weeded out. Assholes don't realise they are just being used by the cockroaches next door.

Latest information: One Girl 'Swastika' died at hospital.

Thank God for not letting the second bomb detonate(timed to detonate after 5 minutes and was kept in dustbin situated at stares which was expected to be used by the crowd to run away after first blast). No surprise if someone gets reminded of Ahmedabad Blast.

after long time a blast has taken place, thank God not much damage has been caused, our prayers go to family and friends of the dead and injured. This blast also shows desperation of terrorists. As usual they have chosen soft targets. Choice of target it appears was chosen to divided the communal peace in India.

Thank God there is no t very high casualty . This blast was definitely planned to create a religious hatred. looks like ISI backed agents are restless after such a mature reaction after court decision on Babari Issue . They are trying their level best to create tension and animosity among us .

    Kahte hain na.

There is nothing soft about these targets, they are targeting our holiest of holy sanctuaries and know that they an get away with it because apni sarkar is busy chasing evil sadvis and assorted 'saffron' terrorists. If the IM swines want to avenge the Baburi demolition(coming as it were a day after the 18th anniversary)they should do like the karsevaks did,in the open, with bare hands and not like cowards that these IM ke bande are..........
