    America, condoms and the Taliban
    By M K Bhadrakumar

The Pakistanis use an earthy metaphor when they want to put their American interlocutors on the defensive. They complain that the United States used Pakistan like a condom, simply discarded it when it is no longer useful, as has happened time and again in the Cold War era. By saying so, they urge the Americans to be constant in friendship.

The Afghans will be feeling the same way about the Americans. One look at CNN on Tuesday afternoon was sufficient to see the misery on the face of Afghan President Hamid Karzai as he lined up for a photo-op announcing that he had been stripped of the votes that would have given him victory in the presidential election, and a runoff against Abdullah Abdullah will be held on November 7........(Asia Times Online :: South Asia news, business and economy from India and Pakistan)

Although this article has been written in context of Afghanistan, this may make our strategic decision makers to think again about our ties with USA and west. Must we look at it as an USA's ploy to undermine Indian interests in Afghanistan? Is USA trying to eliminate Indian influence over Afghanistan through overt/covert means?

This is called realpolitik and to be honest it serves any nation better than an ideological approach, since the diplomacy and international relations has become so much convoluted. Also, the predominance of democracy in European countries and USA is also the reason for this situation, because with change of the office the goal and approach can change radically, depending on the party or personal motivation.

As far as Afghanistan was concerned,Pakistan was not discarded as a used condom, rather Pakistan got paid in full the entire commission for the services rendered in reducing a neighboring state(with whose people a significant portions of her own people shared kinship),a fellow sovereign keen on embracing political modernization and social liberalism(even if of the socialist kind),into one most typical example of a nation awaiting Apocalypse's horse men(to borrow an expression)

That was not just that,Afghanistan's' future political dispensation was left to the whims of the Pakistani generals(most whom made handsome retirement money from the US largess's),what did they come up with..........The Taliban.

Pakistani ruling establishment(if not the people)totally deserved this rendezvous with the Taliban.A country that could not come up with a better political stratagem than to let loose Taliban in an already queered neighborhood, deserved no better treatment.
