US Reconnaissance Plane Shooed away from Iranian Airspace
TEHRAN- Iran's air-defense units shooed away a US military reconnaissance plane seeking to approach the Iranian Army's war-game zone in the Strait of Hormuz and northern Indian Ocean.
"Yesterday (Monday) a US reconnaissance plane sought to approach our region but it left the area after receiving a prompt warning from the Army's air-defense (unit)," Commander of the Iranian Army Major General Ataollah Salehi told reporters on Tuesday.
Salehi made the remarks on the sidelines of the 7th day of a series of massive wargames in the Persian Gulf. The six-staged naval drills which began on Wednesday and will last for 8 days.
Meantime, Iranian military officials reported earlier that an Iranian Navy plane managed to capture US aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower on film during a reconnaissance operation over the Sea of Oman last week.
"An F27 plane of the Army's Navy flew above this aircraft carrier and captured it on film thoroughly," Iranian Army's Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said.
The Admiral pointed out that the USS Eisenhower had protested against the Iranian plane's reconnaissance mission, "but we insisted that this (imaging) is our right".
"The US navy warships pass through free waters in the Sea of Oman and the Navy is entitled to the right to identify all passing vessels in the region as part of its mission," Sayyari went on saying.
Earlier, a senior US military officer had told AFP that on April 21 - on the threshold of a series of wargames conducted by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) in the Persian Gulf and the strategic Strait of Hormuz - an aircraft came as close as 1,000 yards (915 meters) to the USS Eisenhower.
"An Iranian Navy F27 maritime patrol aircraft, flying in international airspace, flew near USS Eisenhower ... shortly after the aircraft carrier had finished routine replenishment at sea operations in the Gulf of Oman," he told AFP, requesting anonymity.
The US officer also added that the aircraft stayed at that distance for about 20 minutes.
