Apart from consolidating its defence trade with India, the US is now moving towards technology sharing and co-production, a top Pentagon official said on Wednesday.

“We’re moving well beyond purely defence trade with India, towards technology sharing and co-production,” deputy secretary of defence, Ashton Carter, told a Washington think-tank.

Early this year, Carter was entrusted by defence secretary, Leon Panetta, to remove bureaucratic hurdles in defence trade with India.

“We’re deepening our security cooperation, technology sharing and defence trade with India, another state so important to our rebalance and, we believe, to the broader security and prosperity of the 21st century,” Carter said.

“We believe that given the inherent links between India and the United States — in values, in political philosophy — that the only limit to our cooperation with India should be our independent strategic decisions, because any two states can differ, not bureaucratic obstacles,” he said.

“So I personally am working daily to remove those obstacles,” said the top Pentagon official in his address on China’s military challenge at the Woodrow Wilson Center, an eminent American think-tank.

In his remarks, Carter emphasized that America’s presence in the Asia Pacific region provides stability to the region.

“The stability provided in important measure by the United States military presence in the region helped first Japan and South Korea to rise and prosper, then Southeast Asia to rise and prosper, and now, yes, China and, in a different way, India to rise and prosper,” he said.

“Working with all of them, we intend to continue to play that positive, pivotal, stabilising role. That’s what the rebalance is all about,” Carter said.

Americans don't have the best reputation when it comes to Technology sharing.

If there is a change in the offing, then we should take full advantage of it.

We should not let an opportunity go just on the basis of past baggage.

Any thing comes from US , it comes with visible or invisible strings attached. Take the example of Israel, it can not sell weapon which it has developed even in partial collaboration with US. We need to move with lots of precautions. Please do not forget ultimate objective of US is to make India sign the agreement CISMOA, LSA & BECA etc etc. The US will use all possible carrots to lure India in to these agreements.

Always remember that there are no "friends" or "enemies" in international relations, only permanent national interests.

Dude, first of all few years back, when India asked for some kind of ground based radars at that the same US replied that Israel will give it to you.

Now the Indian- Israel defense business gone much bigger that is why US wants it all for it self.

Second, Israel do enjoy a lot more US aid, so at the end US kick their a$$, nothing new.

An absolute welcome step, let's see how it goes. A more level playing field for India, and stronger Indo-US relations are the way ahead.

If my memory is serving me well, the idea was first propped up by India, publicly that is. I sense, the idea is that as India-US get closer, China shouldn't feel that the 2 are conspiring against it and so a feel good message, if not anything else.

Anyway, the funny side, Russia wants a "RIC" to happen.

casper is right - our relationship with usa can be via israel and we are better off investing in or counting on israel than the usa

secondly panetta's statemennt is in conjunction with remarks about "partnering with china" - so when that kind of BS is included , the statement , in itself , so far, aint worth it's equivalent weight in toilet paper

till today uncle sam is equivocating here and there with us ....... much more relaible to date , still , are the russians , for all that they have outdated platofrms etc ....... they kept india alive so far , albeit at a cost - but they deliver

we s hould break free of the idea of 2 polar defence world ie its either usa or russia

we should be man enough to create our own priorities and make it multi polar - we have the purchasing power to do that

so it should include israel , french, germans, brits canadians swedish , ukraine , poland ,... and not be tied to usa-russia "counterbalance" and have our hands tied to only either one unnecessarily

    - we have the money to break free of that stranglehold !

^^ Agree. And in any case they are stealing your secrets faster than selling hotcakes. Pretty soon, most of US tech will find an answer and/or countermeasure from Russia and China.
