JharkhandÂ’s stunning seizure: US Army rifle being sold to Maoists - Indian Express

The seizure of a US Army-issue assault rifle from two men in a jungle bordering Bihar has created a flutter in Jharkhand with police saying they would investigate if a network of suppliers of foreign-made weapons was reaching out to Maoists. An NIA team has already reached the state.

A M16 rifle, with markings which identify it as US Army property, was seized on Wednesday by Hazaribagh district police from Praful Malakkar and Anil Yadav, who were held in Chouparan.

Manufactured by Colt Defense, the M16 is the first American-made weapon confiscated in Jharkhand where securitymen have been battling Maoist cadres.

The M16 family, with 80 lakh manufactured pieces, has been the primary service rifle of the US armed forces since the Vietnam War. Efforts are now on to phase it out.

Hazaribagh SP Manoj Kaushik said Malakkar and Yadav, both residents of Bihar, were arrested while a transaction was taking place.
Apart from the M16, we found a bulletproof jacket, Rs 28 lakh in cash, live cartridges for AK 56 and 47, mobile phones and imported pistols. Yadav was to receive the supply and was carrying Rs 9 lakh. All except a lakh was payment for the M16," Kaushik said.

It is not yet clear how the rifle came to the suppliers. "It could be someone hoarding a few pieces and selling them at a premium price," said S N Pradhan, IG (Operations and Intelligence) who is also the spokesperson of the state police.

He said such weapons are something that Maoists look forward to. "They are always looking for weapons that stay true to form, arms that do not malfunction at critical times. There is an uninterrupted supply of crude weapons to them, but maintenance of locally manufactured weapons is a big issue."

They must have got it either from Northeast Insurgent groups who have large quantities of M-16's and M-4's or more likely from Nepalese Maoists who stole large number these weapons from Nepalese Army Soldiers which was provided ex US army Rifles from combating Maoist insurgents.

In February, this year, Rajeev Bhattacharyya, working for a northeast media publication, spent a few days in an Ulfa camp set up ideally in eastern Nagaland with advantages like it being contiguous to Nagaland and Manipur, proximity to Burma, only a few days walk from Upper Assam and well connected by rivers and jungle pathways, making the delivery of weapons and supplies easy. In that camp, he witnessed a huge consignment of European 9mm pistols and HK33 assault rifles being delivered. Though Heckler and Koch do not make the HK33 anymore, variants of the rifle were produced under licence in some south Asian countries. Once the consignment was unpacked, young cadres test-fired the guns before putting them into storage. Sources were cited that orders were being placed for the Chinese Type 81 rifles and the American M16, both in the price range of `2,00,000 to `3,00,000. Interestingly, "concessional rates" apply for orders that are placed in bulk.

Let me guess. Weapons siphoned off from stolen NATO trucks in Pakistan, which the ISI routed to the Naxals.

Even a person in a coma would figure that one out!
a counterfeit that could confuse Indian agencies, a good possible work from our dear neighbor

Reminds me of Zaid Hamid's accusation on India saying that the equipment BLA had was of Indian origin. May be he suggested ISI to get these rifles to avoid suspicion.

Why we are not fencing Indo-Nepal border. ? :frusty:

China is also a suspect.

Picture of the weapon recovered looked like M16 A1.. and my guess is that they got if from Vietnam, Philippines or Thailand...
if they were sourcing weapons from Nepali comrades.. then why go for an M16 A1 when you can go for G 36 :DD
