UN to declare June 21 as World Yoga Day: Sushma Swaraj

NEW DELHI: The United Nations will soon declare June 21 as World Yoga Day following a proposal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj said on Sunday.

"Three months ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to the world community that India's yoga should be celebrated as World Yoga Day. I am happy to inform you that we have received support of 170 nations and four days from today, the United Nations will declare June 21 as the World Yoga Day," Swaraj said at a function in the presence of yoga guru Ramdev.

Addressing the 'Gita Prerna Mahotsav', organized "to celebrate 5,151 years of religious book Gita" at the Red Fort Maidan in Delhi, the senior BJP leader said that yoga is not merely an exercise, but a road to prosperity and good health.

During his visit to the United Nations in September this year, Modi had urged the world community to celebrate Indian yoga at the international level and that June 21 be declared as the World Yoga Day.

This is a welcome news for India.

All the while US & other European countries were claiming Yoga to be their invention by filing patent rights.

What Modi has done is to shut these westerner mouth by raising this in UN. Good Job Modi!! Appreciate it.

Belgium Set To Celebrate International Day Of Yoga

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar will lead a special yoga event in the European Parliament (EP) in Brussels on June 21 following efforts by Indian ambassador to the EU and Belgium Manjeev Singh Puri.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given the call for an International Day of Yoga at the UN last September. A record 177 countries co-sponsored the resolution piloted by India and declared June 21, the day of Equinox, as the International Day of Yoga.

Ambassador Puri obtained the support of members from all political groups in the European Parliament (EP) and persuaded the Delegation for Relations with India in the EP to host the Brussels yoga event.

The Indian embassy in Brussels has also put together a broad group of yoga federations, schools and teachers from across Belgium and Luxembourg to celebrate the International Day of Yoga on June 21.

The flagship would be a large public event in the central park of Brussels, the Bois de la Cambre. Many enthusiasts are expected to participate in a mass yoga programme to coincide with events across the world.

A big participation at the June 21 event is expected from high-level representatives from the EU and Belgium.

First International Yoga Day to Be Held in Moscow
International Day of Yoga was declared last year at the UN General Assembly after the appeal for the adoption by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

The worldwide event will be organized at Moscow’s Sokolniki Park. Russian news agency TASS reports that organizers plan to attract over 2000 participants.

India’s ambassador to Russia, who announced the event, added that his government wants to spread the celebration to other Russian cities. Novosibirsk has welcomed the project and promised to provide space to bring Yoga Day to Russia’s third most populous city.

A conglomeration of Mizoram’s church leaders has appealed to all Mizo Christians not to observe the International Day of Yoga, planned for this Sunday. A brief statement from the Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitu Committee (Mizoram Church Leader’s Committee) or MKHC said it finds it extremely regrettable that the day has been scheduled to clash with a holy day for Christians. “We appeal to all Mizo Christians to not observe the International Day of Yoga,” the MKHC said. Church leaders in Mizoram had earlier submitted a memorandum to BJP President Amit Shah when he visited the state in mid-April. In that memorandum, the MKHC protested against the designation of December 25 (Christmas) as Good Governance Day and the calling of a meeting of various Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts on Good Friday, which
this year fell on April 4.

Yoga without dharmik roots is just another pointless exercise. Consciousness, harmony, positive energy, peace for humanity, holistic approach. Absolute cancer.
