A United Nation panel has criticised the Victorian government and the police for ignoring racial motives behind the spate of assaults on Indian students in Melbourne.

The UN panel expressed its concern over the security of international students in Victoria and criticised the absence of police data on migrants that have been victims of crime, The Age newspaper reported.

After an investigation into Australia's efforts to eliminate racial discrimination, the panel submitted its critical findings in Geneva at the weekend, the report said.

The report by the UN Committee on Elimination of Racial Discrimination is part of a five-year review of Australia's compliance with anti-discrimination obligations.

The panel, in its final report, expressed concern over the series of racially motivated assaults of Indian students, including one death, in the state of Victoria.

It regrets the failure by the government and police (both at a state and federal level) to address the racial motivation of these acts.

The criticism follows a warning by Australia's top diplomat in India, high commissioner Peter Varghese, that the number of Indian students heading to Australia this year was likely to drop by up to 70 per cent.

Australia's reputation as a destination for foreign students was badly damaged over the past year after a series of violent attacks on Indians.

The killing of Indian national Nitin Garg in the Western suburbs in January this year while on his way to work at a fast food restaurant generated a media storm in India over the treatment of foreign students in Australia.

Earlier in February, Indian high commissioner to Australia Sujatha Singh had raised the issue with Governor-General Quentin Bryce that Victoria was a state "in denial" over the severity of the problem.

Meanwhile, a Victorian government spokesman rejected the assertions made in the UN report.

"Both the government and Victoria Police have consistently acknowledged that some attacks on Indian students have been racially motivated," a spokesman was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

The Government also said the claim that judges did not have access to information on the motivation of attacks was incorrect, "stating recent law changes meant judges must take into account hatred or prejudice against a particular group when sentencing".

^^ Education is the third largest industry in Australia and funnily only Indians were attacked. The irony is that in Western countries, the white population cannot distinguish between a Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, Nepali or Sri Lankan when meeting face to face. Even then only why till now our people are being killed? There seems to be a bigger conspiracy than what is seen. Indians are being specifically targeted in my opinion. If these were random attacks, even Pakistanis, Chinese, Bangladeshis and Sri Lankans would have faced similar attacks.

Our coward government should investigate deeper as to why only Indians are being killed in these attacks. Chinese constitute more numbers in Australia than the number of Indians and they weren't attacked. White supremacists attack everyone who isn't white. Then why only Indians killed?

Slur matter of serious concern, shocked India tells Oz envoy

Outraged over the racist slurs by top Australian Police officers, India on Saturday summoned its High Commissioner and sought an explanation on the issue, saying such an attitude was "shocking" and a "matter of serious concern".

High Commissioner Peter Varghese described the incident as "unacceptable" and said one officer concerned has left the police services and the other involved in the incident is facing disciplinary action in the matter.

Victorian police officers have been caught in a racist e-mail scandal joking about the electrocution of an Indian train passenger and suggesting that it could be "a way to fix the Indian student problem" in Melbourne.

In a strong reaction, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, who is currently in Bangalore, said, "Implication of police officers in such behaviour, specially vis-a-vis the Indian community in Australia, is shocking and a matter of serious concern."

Huh??? What makes you think Chinese, Pakistani's or Bangladeshi's are not being targeted???

Just because our media makes a big deal out of it doesn't mean it actually is.

wow. And I thought PDF was bad. I suggest you go to Australia and find out how the situation there is yourself. Indian media sucks ass, it is more TRP oriented rather than actual news oriented.
