ULFA's senior-most leader and political advisor Bhimakanta Buragohain alias 'Mama' died at his residence in Upper Assam's Tinsukia district this evening.

Eighty-year-old Buragohain died following a massive cardiac arrest at around 1730 hrs at his home in Ahomgaon under Dholla police station, ULFA Chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa said.

Buragohain, a bachelor, lived alone with his security guards and was keeping indifferent health during the last few months.

Born in 1931 at Kakopathar in Tinsukia, Buragohain was a founder member of the outfit, its political advisor and ideologue.

A highly regarded leader, he was addressed as 'mama' (uncle) by the cadres. He was also a painter and a sculptor.

He was arrested by Bhutanese Royal Army during Operation All Clear in December 2003 and handed over to the Indian Army in January 2004.

He was housed in Tezpur Central jail and later in Guwahati Central Jail and was released after seven years on December five last year.

Condoling Buragohain's death, Rajkhowa said the ULFA has been orphaned and "it is a big loss to the entire Assamese society"

The ULFA chairman, along with senior members of the outfit and cadres, have rushed to the senior ULFA leader's residence and would organise his cremation.
