The Russian unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) program revealed as long ago as 2007 might have reached the flight-test phase. The evidence comes from a near midair over Arkhangelskoye on February 17, reported by the pilots of two L-29 jet trainers belonging to a civilian flying club based at the Barataevka airfield near Ulyanovsk. The L-29 pilots rapidly altered heading and altitude to escape collision with an unidentified flying object that they described as "a heavyweight unmanned air vehicle." The object was also detected by ATC radar, flying at 270 knots and nearly 7,000 feet. Approaching the L-29s from the rear, it might have flown into them if not for the controller warning the pilots. The object proceeded in the direction of Penza and disappeared from the radar screen. The pilots' description indicates it was a jet- powered UCAV with swept wings. In theory, it might be an old Tupolev Tu-143 Reis reconnaissance UAV or a newer Tu-300 Korshun experimental UAV made during 1990s. But local media reported that the mysterious object bore greater similarity to the Skat. The Russian defense ministry denied knowledge of the incident. Just days before the incident, defense minister Sergei Shoigu told journalists that funding of 320 billion roubles ($9 billion) for new UAV designs has been approved, with deliveries due by 2020. The Russian armed forces already operate about 500 UAVs, but "not all of them are proving up to requirements," Shoigu said. RAC MiG exhibited the Skat UCAV at the MAKS 2007 airshow in Moscow as a full-scale mockup.

Tanan UAV bulks up for
naval service


Airbus Defence & Space is gearing up for the first flight of a new, higher-weight variant of its Tanan vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned air vehicle. The design was previously designated the Tanan 300, to reflect a maximum take-off weight of 300kg (660lb), but the manufacturer has now increased this figure by 50kg, allowing the rotary UAV to carry a payload of 80kg.

Airbus Defence & Space Sascha Hapke, senior manager air systems Airbus Defence & Space, says that ground tests of the vehicle are under way, with a maiden sortie "pretty imminent". To achieve the higher maximum take-off weight, the manufacturer has redesigned the UAV's airframe. However, the type's original diesel engine and other systems are unchanged. Tests will be conducted with an L-3 Wescam electro-optical/ infrared camera installed, says Hapke. Airbus has yet to secure an order for the Tanan, but Hapke says it is "in discussions" with navies "worldwide". Although declining to name potential clients, he does single out the French navy as one possible customer; but cautions that there has been "no decision yet". Pitched against the lighter Saab Skeldar and the Schiebel Camcopter S-100, Hapke believes the now-350kg Tanan sits in the "sweet spot" for ship-based tactical, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance platforms.

DARPA Unveils Hack-Proof Drone

The Pentagon's research arm unveiled a new drone built with secure software that prevents the control and navigation of the aircraft from being hacked. The program, called High Assurance Cyber Military Systems, or HACMS, uses software designed to thwart cyber attacks. It has been underway with the Defense Advance Research Project Agency for several years after originating at the University of California, San Diego and the University of Washington, said Kathleen Fischer, HACMS program manager for DARPA. "The software is designed to make sure a hacker cannot take over control of a UAS. The software is mathematically proven to be invulnerable to large classes of attack," Fisher said.

The mini drone is engineered with mathematically assured software making it invulnerable to cyber attack. Citing the success of mock-enemy or "red-team" exercises wherein cyber experts tried to hack into the quadcopter and failed, Fisher indicated that DARPA experts have referred to the prototype quadcopter as the most secure UAS in the world. "We started out with the observation that many vehicles are easy for malicious hackers to tamper with the software and take control remotely. We've replaced all the software with our high assurance software that was developed using the tools and techniques that were invented in the program," Fisher said. The drone prototype was among more than 100 projects and 29 advanced research programs on display in the Pentagon's courtyard Wednesday in what was billed as DARPA Demo Day.

The Italian Navy has commenced technical evaluations of the Camcopter S-100 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aboard the San Giusto Landing Helicopter Dock. The vessel has embarked on a week-long evaluation cruse with pilots from the navy's 4th Helicopter Group and Schiebel technical representatives. The Italian Navy became the first European customer for Camcopter when it selected the UAV in February 2014. One system, consisting of two aircraft, a control station, piloting unit and antennas, has been leased to the Italian Navy to meet ISR requirements of vessels at sea. According to the navy, trials have so far evaluated the UAV's ability to integrate with ship's systems, to take-off and land from the ship's deck; and the capabilities of the system's sensors. Tests have also measured the noise and the radar and optical visibility to determine detection parameters of detection. The Italian Navy plans to operate the UAV as an extension of the host vessel's sensor suite, to broaden the effective horizons of its ISR assets, and provide greater standoff range when approaching potential threats in the vicinity.

UAV for Brazilian Navy



The Camcopter S-100 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has carried out a series of demonstrations for the Brazilian Navy and Ministry of Defence from the Brazilian Amazonas Class Ship APA on 2-5th June. The trials, conducted off the coast of San Pedro in Brazil, saw the S-100 UAV fly a series of sorties using scenarios designed to that allow the Brazilian Navy to assess the capabilities of the system's L3 Wescam MX-10, Selex ES SAGE ESM, Selex PicoSAR Radar and Automatic Identification System (AIS) payloads. According to Schiebel, the trails were carried out in day and night at ranges out to 44 nautical miles with target detection out to 90 nautical miles. A number of presentations were also given over four days to the attending officers, covering the unique maritime capabilities of the Camcopter. Schiebel's Camcopter S-100 Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) UAV needs no prepared area or supporting launch or recovery equipment. It operates in day and night, under adverse weather conditions, with a beyond line-of-sight capability out to 200 km, both on land and at sea. The S-100 navigates via pre- programmed GPS waypoints or is operated with a pilot control unit.

IAI stretches BirdEye 400 endurance

Israel Aerospace Industries has extended the endurance of its BirdEye 400 mini unmanned air vehicle to over 2h, with the step having been achieved by using an improved power source. Produced by the company's Malat division, the BirdEye 400 has a 2.2m (7.2ft) wingspan and a maximum take-off weight of 5.6kg (12.3lb). Powered by an electric propulsion system, which reduces the air vehicle's noise signature and audio detection probability, the type has a maximum speed of 45kt (83km/h) and an operational range of 5.4nm (10 km).

Each system comprises three of the UAS – which carries an IAI MicroPop electro-optical/infrared sensor – a ground control unit and a satellite datalink. An automatic flight control system manages take-off and landing, and can manage recovery of the aircraft if the communication link with its ground control unit fails. IAI has previously exported the BirdEye 400 to a number of counties, including Russia, where Oboronprom partnered with the company for a $400 million contact signed in 2011 that also included other types of UAS. According to Russian press reports, at least 12 BirdEye systems were included in the deal. Operational examples of the BirdEye 400 are being upgraded now to take advantage of the endurance boost, an IAI source says.

really feel navy should get these, a shivalik class can have one of these and another a medium multipurpose naval helicopter.
