The Hindu : Front Page : U.S. aid was used on defence against India, says Musharraf

U.S. aid was used on defence against India, says Musharraf

ISLAMABAD: The former President, Pervez Musharraf, has said the military aid the U.S. gave Pakistan for the war against terror during his tenure was used to strengthen defences against India.

Gen.(Retd.) Musharraf admitted that he had violated the rules governing the use of the military aid, but justified his action, saying he had “acted in the best interest of Pakistan.”

He did not want to compromise on Pakistan’s interests, he said.

In an interview to a news channel, he said he “did not care” whether the U.S. would be angered by his disclosure.

India and several influential lawmakers in the U.S. have been accusing Pakistan of having used the U.S. funds to strengthen its defences against India.

However, Pakistan has denied any wrongdoing.

Gen. (Retd.) Musharraf said that had he not supported the U.S. in the war on terror after the September, 2001 attacks, American forces could have entered Pakistan to capture its nuclear assets; it was also possible that the U.S. and India could have jointly attacked the country. — PTI

Even the US congress is not clear about how the funds are used by Pakistan. The US is simply giving the the money and hoping for the best.

Gen Musharaf has done a great disservice here to the very "interests of Pakistan" by explicitly letting out what has been an open secret. He has been going all this non sense ever since he has been out of power. This revelation will just hurt Pakistan now, that provided Obama keeps his eyes and ears open and digests the facts. These days he is blind and deaf to what's happening there and keeps pumping billions into Pakistan.

The real question is whether Obama is blind(and deaf) or pretending to be blind(and deaf)? That should clear our misconceptions. Did Obama(and US) did not know about these misdeeds of Pakistan till Mushy revealed it? Is US so dumb? If not, then why is it persisting with the policy of giving millions to Pakistan(which uses this money to bolster its arsenal against India)?

I think, US is doing a off-setting of the region. US doesnt want anyone to grow beyond a limit. China will be off-setted by India. India will be off-setted by Pakistan. No one grows too tall. Everyone must play their roles to the satisfaction of US. So, US will persist with donating to Pakistan even after knowing that this is a direct threat to India. Because Pakistan can be used as a leverage against India.

Your nation has known for quite some time the funds were being miss allocated. It is the US conspiracy to start an arms race with India so they can sit on the sidelines and become both Pakistan and India's major arms supplier. While Pakistan's economy is teetering on bankruptcy they know they must prop them up since they can't compete with the growing power and influence of India. At the same time they sign military cooperation with India so they can play both sides of the game the whole time getting what they want, a contained India and China... how clever.

What kind of arms race can Pak sustain when they don't have enough money. They are even diverting aid money into defense procurements.

Yea, Pakistan is down today, so US is helping them. Bolstering Pakistan is an indirect leverage on India. India has no control over Pakistan, so India has to go to US for help. This is the leverage US has over India. US is simply off-setting the region. A glass ceiling has been placed. India, China and Pakistan are fighting for the influence while US gains. Of course, of late China is following its own course. India must do the same.

You answered your own question. They will buy it whether they can afford it or not for the time being. When the crises is over and Pak starts drilling their offshore fields they are going to be dependent on the US for weapons and will continue their race.

Obama has himself stated that, as long as Pakistan is helping US to meet its objective of combating Terror outfits in Af-Pak region till then it won't have any issues with Pakistan's overall commitment to US Aid, as more or less US have realized that without Pakistan, they won't be able to achieve complete peace in the Afganistan. US is also fully mindful about the fact that, misuse of aid by Pakistan express its deliberation to survive as a nation as it lacking enough resources to stand on its feet.

I think thats just an excuse to prop up Pakistan. IMO, Pakistan can be persuaded by US without having to tolerate their mischief against India.

Anyway, since we agree on one fact that US is helping Pakistan inspite of knowing very well that it is against the interests of India, shouldnt India have plans to check-mate this situation. Instead, all we see is Home Minister of India going on a begging spree to US(to ask them to get Hafiz Sayeed punished).:((

US is fully mindful of the fact that, Pakistan as a nation is fully committed to its dangerous path of having perpetual conflict with India. Under such circumstances, even the presence of US is irrelvant, as even if there was no US aiding then only Pakistan must have been inventing various other paths to armed itself against India.

Nuke Test during 1998 is testimony to this fact, as despite fully aware about the fact that nuke test will literally bring sanctions and cripple already choatic economy, Pakistan still proceed further to achieve its quest of having deterrance against India. At that time as well, despite US and major countries warning of sanction, Pakistan achieve its objective.

I agree with you. Pakistan is undoubtedly committed to the reason for its creation: to be in a perpetual conflict with India and make life hard for India.

So, it is the first enemy of India.

But, and this is important, those who help India's enemies knowing fully well are also our enemies(irrespective of what they say). With this calculation, it is US that is the real mastermind.

IMO, there are several tiers. The first layer consists of foolish Pakistanis that are fighting India. The second layer consists of China. China is using Pakistan and other pearls against India to be the sole power of Asia. China is bigger enemy than Pakistan. But US; US controls everyone. US is playing a game of off-setting the enitre Asia. Russia, China, Pakistan, India other smaller nations all are part of the game. One bigger asian power is off-setted by another asian power in US' scheme of things.

Of late, China has risen and is challenging US. US has also accomodated China to an extent. All this doesnt augur well for India. And India must have plans for future.

USA looked the otherway tacitly supporting pakistan when they were acquiring nuclear bomb making technolgy from all over the place and when they proliferated the same to some countries.looking from that perspective this issue is no big deal.i agree with johnee they use pakistan as a proxy to contain india and india as a proxy to china so they keep the title of being the sole power as china is trying to catch up..

Nah! I am not agreed with you that much. Because there is some difference between US outlook of China as compared to India. US looks India as a mature nation being a largest democracy in the world and it cannot veer away from its principal. At the same time, India never try to challange dominance of US as far as its military might is concerned. US has no problems in India's quest to surpass all the nation in the world to become major economic power, since US has seen some responsible behaviour in India. But whatever I have said above is in totally contrast for China as it is a communist nation being runned by single political party at its whim and looking to Challenge US both Economically, but more so with Militarily.

using n% of the aid-money to buy some weapons! can this be called arms race. The race between china-U.S or India -China can be called arms race but how does Pak fit in here. If someone is concerned then it is U.S because it's their money going down the hole.

Mate, US has supported and will support all kinds of shady regimes as long as it serves their interests. India is another nation as far as US is concerned. India's democracy does not have any special appeal to US, to believe otherwise is naivety. US just gives excuses of all kinds to support regimes when it deems fit. In the larger geo-political game, US wants to be absolute master and that means that all other nations have to work as US' proxies. India will be treated well as long as it serves their interests, if and when India tries to exceed the brief we will be off-setted using one of our neighbours. China has realised this and is moving the pawns to get the control of Asia completely.

But as far as India is concerned, China is an immediate threat but US is a long term one. India must have this basic understanding to play the realpolitik right.

The US is propping them up to have a continued arms race in South Asia of which they will profit. It is a race since Pak doesn't need the weapons yet buys them anyway despite a failed economy. If it was not a certain level of parity they seek, they would spend their aid money on trying to rebuild their shattered economy rather than buying weapons they should never use.

He (Musharraf) failed to mention how much money actually went streight in the pockets of the Generals? And when the Americans demand for the audit, they cry like a 2 years old. I have always supported the idea that Americans or whoever the donors must keep a keen eye on all the money and aids and check if it is being used for the purpose it was given or ending up in the black hole we call Pakistan Military and Civil establishment.
