Authorities today discovered a 400-mt long tunnel, running between India and Pakistan, along the International Border in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir. "We have discovered a tunnel running between Pakistan and India in Samba district," SSP (Samba) Israr Khan told reporters.

The tunnel was detected after an area caved-in at two or three places due to rains near the BSF's Chillayari Border Out Post (BOP), he said. "After the cave-in, the area was dug out to know the reason. But, the authorities were surprised to find a tunnel," the SSP said.

The tunnel, with a dimension of 3x3-ft, was running between Chillayari BOP and Pakistan's Numberiyal BOP, he said.

Dug at a depth of 25-ft below the ground level, it was 400-mt long on the Indian side, the SSP said adding "we are confirming whether the tunnel is operational or not."

The tunnel, which seemed to be freshly constructed, had air supply through a 2-inch pipe, he said adding "we are looking into all aspects." Pakistan must be facing a lot of pressure from the militants to infiltrate them into the Indian territory, the SSP said.

"Since it is difficult to push in militants to the Indian side, they decided to set up a tunnel to facilitate infiltration," the SSP said.

U.S. To Help Israel Shut Down Smuggling Tunnels

Charles Oden, a geophysicist at the Colorado School of Mines, says there are a number of systems that might be used, ranging from ground-penetrating radar to remote sensing from satellites, that can detect tiny changes in the level of the ground.

The size seems inadequate for ventilation.

This is just one they found with the help of mother nature. How many more could be there or in making? This leads to a very pertinent question, Why are we getting in bed with a known and proven enemy? When will the citizens of India wake up and demand a retaliatory action which Pakistan is asking for since 1999 Kargil war? I hope Indians will show them the door and shut it down for a very long time (Minimum 65 years of central Government with out Congress participation).

There are ways to detect tunnels if the govt wants to get serious. Israel can help
with this.

The tunnel may not even be for militants. There's another very serious infiltration problem from Pakistan, and that is of drugs. I know that not that long ago, a number of tunnels were also found running underneath the Indo-Pak border in Punjab.

an article on todays 29th july 2012 ) online issue of the express tribune ( newspaper ) of pakistan has an article on this topic and says that the indian BSF is now all over that area investigating - my question is where were they before all this ? - why was it that a villager was the one who reported the matter to the BSF - who is doing the job of patrolling the border areas - the villagers or the paid officers ?

Are there more tunnels on the India-Pakistan border?

The discovery of a tunnel running from Pakistan to India has lead security personnel to fear that similar tunnels exist, which could be used to push terrorists and weapons into Kashmir.

After the discovery of a tunnel running from Pakistan to India, security personnel fear that more such tunnels may have been dug to push terrorists and weapons into Kashmir.
The tunnel, still under construction, was discovered by a farmer Saturday near a border post on the international border in Samba district south of Jammu.
One official told IANS that the tunnel's aim was to "push in militants, arms and ammunition from Pakistan".
With India's Independence Day only 18 days away, some fear that the tunnel may have been prepared to infiltrate militants on or ahead of Aug 15.
The tunnel, about 55 km southwest of Jammu, is 3 feet by 3 feet in diameter and has pipes for supplying oxygen, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (Samba) Israr Khan.
It appears the tunnel is 400-500 metres long, he said.
The tunnel runs below the border fence, erected on Indian territory to prevent infiltration of terrorists from Pakistan. "Our fair assessment is that this tunnel is under construction."
The Pakistani post Lambryal is about 500 metres opposite India's Chinari post. "There is thick vegetation in the area. We can't know the activities going on that side."
Officials do not rule out the possibility of more such tunnels either already constructed or under construction from Pakistan to India.
Residents of Chhichwal village say the Border Security Force (BSF) and the army are not taking the issue seriously.
Said Fateh Singh, an elderly man: "It is over 36 hours since the tunnel was discovered. But no one from the army has come to find out the facts.
"It is only the senior superintendent of police who is camping here. The BSF came with a machine to dig the place but that machine ran out of fuel.
Ravi Choudhary, a farmer who saw the sinking area leading to the tunnel's discovery, said: "By not acting fast we are giving time to Pakistan to cover up things."
The Jammu and Kashmir Police has called for geological experts and the remote sensing department to study the tunnel. "But no one has reached so far," said Parveen Katwal, another villager.
Because of strong security measures on the Indian side, Pakistan has been finding it difficult to push militants into Jammu and Kashmir.
"That is the reason Pakistan has embarked on constructing such an underground tunnel to push arms, ammunition and militants into Jammu and Kashmir," one official said.
Hundreds of Kashmiri youths who went over to Pakistan for arms training and now desperate to return to the state by surrendering to security forces and making use of government rehabilitation policies.
Pakistan wants to push in more militants into Jammu and Kashmir as there are very few left in the state, another official said.

India lodges protest with Pak over tunnel along border in Jammu

India on Tuesday lodged a "strong protest" with Pakistan over the detection of a cross-border tunnel along the international border in Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir.
"A strong protest was lodged late this afternoon by Border Security Force (BSF) with its counterpart Pakistan

Rangers over detection of a tunnel in the Indian territory from Pakistan along the International Border (IB) in Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir," a senior BSF official told PTI.
The BSF also handed over pictorial evidence to Pakistani authorities at a flag meeting in RS Pura sector of Jammu district, he said.

The tunnel is in straight alignment from Pakistan to Chichwal border village via Chilyari post from Lumbriyal post in Shakergarh sector of Pakistan.

The tunnel was detected after an area caved-in in a straight line at some places due to rains near the fencing close to Chillayari BoP of BSF along the LoC. The tunnel had been dug between two sides.

I didn't hear any updates on this. Has any action been taken? Did we start searching for other tunnels?
