Till US does not designate terrorism originating in Pakistan as Pakistani State sponsored Terrorism nothing is going to change. New policy is still not addressing root cause . India has to fight its own war. .

The gist of Trump's new strategy in Afghanistan as enunciated by him yesterday was to ensure the Taliban does not come to power in kabul and to prevent this at all costs. He has lambasted the Pakis too for helping the Taliban which without Pak's aid would have collapsed long ago.

However, in contrast, Pak strategy is to try and install a puppet Taliban government in Afghanistan for so called 'strategic depth' against India. This has been Pak's aim since the past 15 years and thus the total support to them as well as the Haqqani network based in Pakistan against the ISAF/NATO.

How this dichotomy in objectives of the US and Pak is going to play out now would be interesting to watch. If there is a surge in US troops deployment in Afghanistan, then the question is how much the US will be prepared to pander to Pak demands as it would continue to be a logistics lifeline to US troops in Afghanistan.

It's a catch 22 situation for the US!

Here's more....

Don't worry about the trade deficit part, it is for domestic audience.

Trump probably went of script, as usual.

There is no expectation that we send troops, and just continue to do what we have been doing I.e afghan institution building.

We have been building Afghan institutions for past so many years in the expectation that when the Americans leave India will get its strategic hold there. Its just wishful thinking. Afghanistan seems to be a carcass surrounded by vultures like China, Russia, Iran, Pak. All are waiting for US to withdraw so that they can eat it out. Till we are part of the end game no amount of institution building is going to help. The solution is to play our own game in Pak.
If we start wiping out terror infra in PoK and begin asserting G&B it will send chills down China & Pak. Afghans will also be emboldened to fight for Khyber and cross Durand Line just as we have started to do in LoC. US will also support Afghan action inside Pak territory. Pak should not be perceived as a sovereign state. It should be violated as and when required.

Ideally yes....

But our chaps don't even know how to buy weapons for our own troops within the country, highly unlikely that we can manage an overt military campaign in Afghanistan.

What you say can still be achieved by focussing on institution building.

Fundamentally every country needs to understand one thing, afghans don't like being told what to do. At the same time they will do anything for you once you build trust. Trust building takes time.

I don't get why you people are discussing about Indian boots on Afghan soil. We never said we are ready for that. Trump only said he wanted economic assistance from India, not military assistance. Where did this idea come from? I think Trump is going to make us agree on a number (in $ billions) to provide as economic aid and to create civil infrastructure and up-skilling Afghan population. Basically he is asking us to step up our efforts towards supporting Afghan civil government so that it can govern its own country effectively, while USA will take care of the military matters in Afghanistan. Once Afghanistan is stable and strong, the Americans will leave and establish a trade and ally relationship with Afghanistan. We will continue with our Chabahar plan and engage Afghanistan economically. The biggest challenge however, is going to be the Afghan-government led effort to stitch together the numerous ethnicities of their country into a common citizenry that is resistant to radicalisation.

This goes beyond india helping in Afghanistan. I see it as a future liberation of Baluchistan . I said many times that if usa gets betrayed by pakistan Baluchistan will be liberated. This is the first step. This will also put an end to gwadar port and Chinese incursions into Pakistan.

No he won't..

If he does that, american media will also have to acknowledge the dam construction , Afghan parliament building , scholarships to Afghan students and many more... it will also come to light that American civil works in Afghanistan were a failure, there are major scams there which were swept under the carpet during Obama period.

these things are under wraps or rather not widely discussed in American media and think tanks.

Ambassador Sun Weidong insists the relationship with Pakistan has "attained new heights, which will be further strengthened in days to come."
'New heights'? How much higher will this frikkin relationship go? It's already higher than the mountains.
It's probably set to shoot through the stratosphere now! :pound:Darned morons!!

@LETHALFORCE

Agreed but this is not about Modi. It is about what Drumpf says to Americans. Remember this is the same country which renamed French fries to "Freedom fries" when it's long time ally France didn't participate in the illegal and downright stupid Gulf War 2. 1000 year of French warfighting history was turned to shit by a nobody when he wrote "cheese eating surrender monkeys". Gun totting, Bible thumping rednecks who form his voter base still think that was a betrayal.

India has no chance of rebutting the bullshit that will be peddled in Brietbart or Fox news. Inbreds like Glen Beck or Shannon O Bannon will call the shots in front of the American people not Modi.

I am sure this is more than a last minute request by Trump. US and India must have planned and communicated and consulted with each other for months before a statement like this is made, you may feel this is a one sided request ? I think this was mutually agreed long time ago. This has strategic implications for pak and china.

@ezsasa No they won't. American media couldn't care less about India's contribution in Afghanistan. Hell, they didn't gave two shits about the entire ISAF contribution. For American media, it is a strictly American endeavor.

A nation full of Rambo and Cowboys doesn't exactly know or care for what a single highway or dam means for an impoverished country like Afghanistan. They want to see things go boom and not lose soldiers in the process.

India is not in the business of seeing things go boom and therefore will get very little attention for dams or streets.
