This is huge, and redraws the South Asia strategic equation. Whether or not there's a US-India military alliance on the cards, the US is officially out of Pakistan. This opens up the possibility of overt US support (and Chinese support to Pakistan) in the event of major hostility, US throwing its weight behind Chabahar, and also affects India's local politics, which could become increasingly anti-Pakistan.

Would this not draw Iran-Pakistan closer and impact our interests in Afghanistan?

Addendum:

On the other hand, if Trump stays true to his word (and does not get impeached) and the Iranian regime falls, then this will be the biggest strategic victory for us since Bangladesh.

A tweet is the big anti Pak move???

Reason the US is pissed with pak is that China is using Pak now.
Reason US suddenly discovered love for India is to use against China.
Geopolitics only, nothing to do with terrorism and such.

As long as Pakis have fewer dollars to fund their Jihadis and fewer spares for their F-16s, we should be happy.

The move is accompanied with this step.

US to withhold $255m from another fund after CSF cuts

Anwar IqbalUpdated December 31, 2017
WASHINGTON: The Trump administration may withhold $255 million from a fund meant for providing military training and equipment to Pakistan, adding to already existing cuts on reimbursements, official sources told Dawn.

On Saturday, The New York Times reported that the Trump administration was “contemplating withholding” $255m in aid over what it feels is Islamabad’s ‘non-serious attitude’ in helping counter terrorism in Afghanistan.

The administration believes Pakistan’s intransigence is signified by its “repeated refusal” to grant the United States access to a Haqqani network operative, who was allegedly captured by Pakistani forces during an October raid to free a Canadian-American family, the report added.

Most dramatic move regarding Pakistan I have seen by a US president; throwing out a decades old foreign policy. This has been well thought out US knows not much to gain by keeping pakistan in the strategic equation. US feels deceived by Pakistan and I think Pakistan will be paid back a lot more than this.

Pakistan is like a necessary lump of boil to USA. This is just another tactic to presssure pakis. We will hear in some days of some Talibani VIP being killed or USA getting some major tips /info.we have to fight our own war. Nobody is gonna fight your war for you.

Trump's statement seems too aggressive to be any temporary pressure tactic. We will see in a few months.
